They are one of the nicest and courteous people out there who can seemingly hang with everyone. However, put them together in the same room, they tend to form their own little group. Outside of class, you seldom find yourself kicking it with them because a) they go back to their wives or husbands and have kids to raise b) you're too wild for their taste and thus considered heresy if seen by other mormons drinking with you.

why is this? i'm just trying to learn things about my future colleagues. cheerios.

Didn't you just answer your own question? No caffeine, no alcohol, no extramarital sex... what's so bad about all that? You want to hang out with a mormon, rent a good G-rated movie and babysit their kids.

LMAO.

Why is it that Mormons are drawn to dentistry? I saw quite a few Mormons during my interviews. At some of the schools I interviewed at, Mormon alumni set up scholarships strictly for other Mormons only. I almost get a sense that schools then feel obligated to accept Mormons so that the private scholarship money can be put to use. I may be off base here. Just an observation.

Not in dental school.

If mormons were minorities, then I'd be accepted to dental school by now!

I think mormons are drawn to dentistry because it is a great family job. You can bring in enough money to support your family, but have enough time to actually spend with them. Family obviously is really important to us, which is probably why it seems that we rush home to our families after class is over.

Cause they can and ain't no law against it. 😎

Sheesh 4 kids? Ouch! Well, most of us are alittle older than the average student in our class as well. I'll be 26 when I start dental school in Aug/Sept and I'll have been married for 2 years. No kids for me yet though (that i know of  ) Just kidding... really, no kids though.

Well, with no premarital sex, you gotta get busy once it's legal . . .

I guess so, or maybe it's just that they want to get that damn church-issued underwear off.

But seriously . . . maybe you'll understand when you have kids. They are the coolest thing ever. I don't understand why people wouldn't want to have kids. Much more fun that gettin drunk. To each his own I guess.

I'm gonna kill myself if dental school im going to is 🙁 full of people with this mentality.

Who said I was mormon, and who said I've never drunk? I just think that drinking is pretty stupid, that's all (You guys have taken physiology, right? Chemistry? After learning what I was doing to myself, I never drank again). We are all entitled to our own opinions. I respect yours, so please respect mine.

I'm 26 and have 3 kids. My wife got pregnant at age 18 by one of her boyfriends. When I came around three years later, we got married and had two more kids right away. I wanted to have kids right away. Don't ask me why, I just did. I don't think I've ever gone to sleep without seeking out my 3 year old little girl. She loves to chill on the couch with me, unlike my wife. So that works out nice. It's not easy, but I think of how cool it will be later when they're older and I actually have someone to shoot hoops with or some ball games to go to. I think for mormons, we actually like to imagine the future and how fun we can make it. But to us, fun means having people to do things with that we care about. They'll always be there for us. I can joke and they won't take it the wrong way cause they know me. I can't count all the friends I have had in the past that have come and gone but my kids will always be here. I make sure to raise my kids to have fun and most importantly, understand sarcasm and know how to joke around back with me cause that's all I do with them. It's fun when I'm messing around with my wife and she doesn't even know it....then suddenly..my 7 year old says...."Mom, he's messing with you, can't you tell?"

Personally, I totally understand the problem of having too many mormons in the same room. I grew up in AZ and am now living in Logan UT. Totally opposite cultures it seems. I'm used to having friends in AZ of 10 nonmormons to every 1 mormon. And now it's the opposite and it does drive me crazy.

If we have a wife and family, you probably won't see us at any clubs or drinking. But, if you ever want a good time aside from all that, we've pretty much have had to master it. But not all of us. There's still those unfortunate ones that....nevermind. Having fun is my main goal wherever I am. I don't know about others though.

I used to hook up with a mormon chick... She was naughty....

Have you guys ever seen the Southpark episode about mormons. Probably one of the funniest things i've ever seen. "Dumb da dumb dumb dummmmb"

....or to some it's a reason to get drunk....

uh... simple, it's because mormons are cult members.

you notice how you never meet female mormons? or if so they're always "former or less active" ones... it's because the active ones are back in the compound breeding mormonites so one day they can extend their influences and one day challenge the international zionist conspiracy that runs the globe.

Remember kids follow these sage advice and you shall have a good life:

say no to mormons

say no to Kevin Costner movies

say I don't know maybe I probably shouldn't okay! to drugs

Phremius...

Your post was the exact reason why people should say no to drugs....Coherency is the first to go.

Ill admit that I didnt know what to expect when I entered dental school regarding my mormon classmates especially since 25% of my class are mormons....but Im so glad that I got exposed to them.

Mormons are seriously one of the nicest and funniest people Ive ever met. Ive learned so much about their religion, and their beliefs although they never force it upon me.

Dont miss the opportunity to meet someone simply based on their religion because you'd be missing out on a lot. Mormons are great!!!

God I hope not all classes are 25% mormon. I was raised as a mormon but I left the religion as soon as I could. Some mormons are fun people (both of my best freinds are mormons) but if you get them in a group they are intolerable and a good 75% of them are humorless, boring people.

i'm not sure if you were joking or not, but i thought i'd put in my two cents as a kind of mormon feminazi. i am a devout mormon, attending BYU. i love the mormon religion. i wouldn't consider myself more liberal than most girls there. even considering my faith and the supposed stereotype of women staying at home, i applied to dental school. during my application, i got engaged to a guy in dental school. so now we are going to be married, both going to dental school - imagine that! a mormon woman not staying at home to have kids! hahahaha it happens more than you'd think. just a thought.

What are you talking about? Did you know that Will Ferrell is a Mormon?
I'm sure if you asked bloodygums he could also give you stats like, 80% of Catholic priests molest children and 76% of Muslums fly planes into buildings.

Like Lake Lvr sad earlier, many Mormons are choosing dentistry because it’s a good, rewarding family job. BYU is doing excellent 👍 job preparing their students for the dental school. Ask your fellow Mormon dental-student to share his/her BYU anatomy handouts. You’ll be surprise how good these notes are. The issue is that usually no information will be share with the “main population" by the Mormon group in the class. If you happened to see it and asked for it, they will never refuse and will give it to you, but no information will be “volunteer”.

So you're basing your veiw of mormons entirely on Will Ferrell? Then I guess all Caltholics must my heavy drinking, chain smoking, comedians, because Denis Leary is a catholic. I've actually met a lot of mormons. I lived in Utah for 3 years, all of my family members are mormons, and I was forced to attend 4 years of mormon seminary school. If you want to tell if a mormon will be fun, tell a dick joke in front of them; if they are shocked, just walk away slowly.

People are people. There are funny and nice catholics, jews and even muslims. I hate it when people take a group and try to categorize.

I wasn't serious about Will Ferrell being a Mormon. But you are also quick to judge every Mormon from the ones you have encountered. Are there judgemental Mormons? Hell Yes!!!! But that's not a Mormon trait as I'm sure there are many judgemental Catholics and Jews ect. The ones you have to back away slowly from after telling a "dick joke" is probably because they are dorks and not totally because they are Mormon. Trust me some of the jokes I would tell, would probably have you backing away. Just because you know what church I go to on Sundays does not mean you know who I am.

Is it considered naive to not appreciate lame jokes? Alas, tis the nature of almost all people who begin to generalize/categorize, that they begin to become close minded and ignorant. One reason I want to do dentistry is for the chance to make enough money and have enough time that I will be able to travel the world and find out as much as I can about the many different cultures of the world. You know........variety is truly the spice of life. Would you prefer a world where everyone did just as you do? Believed just as you do? Worshiped just as you do? Lived right where you do? Ate the same as you? Looked the same as you? You're getting my drift right? In this life each of you will have the opportunity to chose exactly what you want to like and what to dislike. You can decide who your friends are going to be, what type of food will be your favorite, what type of profession you would like to have....etc. But please don't be so naive as to talk down about someone who does things different than you. I would have never known anything more about Colombia than that they are known for their drug trafficing had I not married a Colombian. Since then many of my tastes for food/entertainment/languages/hobbies have now changed. If you even care about improving your own life, why don't you spend more time learning more about different cultures/beliefs/ideas than critisizing them.

Geez, what a rant! Now mormons can not only be stereotyped as judgemental, but haughty as well!

PLEASE tell me you're joking. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. If you want to know what mormons are taught, go to www.lds.org and read about their beliefs. There are mormons who are a blast, there are mormons who are just chill, there are mormons who leave the church, and there are mormons who completely humiliate the rest of us. But the majority of us are nice people who work hard, have good values and don't judge groups, like they themselves are being judged. Just like any religion across the world, there are alllll sorts of people in each one. I personally don't judge anyone by their race, religion, or gender. I look at their character. I don't look at a catholic and think "wow, so THAT'S what catholics are like." That's idiotic. I think everyone would be wise to do the same. No generalizations. No judgements. Just getting to know someone for who they truly are.

Calling the kettle black? What in the world does that mean?

Did anyone actually think this thread wouldn't be controversial?

Hey, lets just start a thread about black people, or jews, or any other group. As long as it doesnt have anything to do with dental information. Where are the moderators? out to lunch... all mormons? I am sure Javiticavity, and gavin are... and I wouldnt count sprgrover out either being from idaho.

I may live next door, but the slurs need to stop. 😉 Let's keep it professional, please.

Hey, I am not meaning any slur... I am wondering what this has to do with dental?

Though I'm originally from Idaho, I'm not LDS. Growing up there I did, of course, have several LDS friends and I can say that they are, on the whole, very respectful and hardworking. Trust me, there are worse things to be saddled with next to in class than a person that possess these qualities.

With that said, I'm closing this thread. Not because things have gotten really out of hand, but the waters are starting to stir and this forum is, afterall, dedicated to topics to the profession of dentistry and its pursuit. If you would like to start a light-hearted conversation and engage LDS guests here on SDN feel free to do so in the Lounge . Thanks. 😉
