I have to say Meharry, with NYU a close second. In the case for Meharry, most haters don't even know a single thing about the school. NYU's disorganization, class size and price tag makes them an easy target. Thoughts on this topic?

This is an easy one. And the award goes to...
Columbia!

NYU gets a lot of bashing.

i'd say most people bash NYU rightly or wrongly. as far as columbia, well, i've never come across real bashing. all i have seen is some crticism (including mine), albeit some of it destructive. as far as meharry and howard, well, most people dont know anything about these schools but they assume that they are not good just because they take low stats and because of the minority stigma: meharry and howard are predominantly black, and that does not draw applicants.

actually, the practice of downright mean-spirited bashing is not only unwarranted but is also childish and hurtfull to those who attend the bashed schools. i say if you have some genuine well-informed negative criticism of a d-school, then go ahead and post it. otherwise, consider the feelings of those who attend these schools.

NYU is known for admitting a lot of students, then they drop students ( i dont know if 1/3 of the class is an exaggerated number or not, but they drop quite a few) to make room for foriegn students(who pay full cash, i'm assuming, because they can't qualify for loans), and the ppl who end up being kicked out lose their money to NYU and are under enormous debt without having completed their education...this is true....

are we all that sensitive?

like the Governator said "I am not a GIRLYMAN!"

last year Harvard was bashed on here......I never understood why though....my thinkin was jealousy.....Harvard was bashed due to the thought they had more focus on research than on the clinics.....thats what i remember from posts last year

Yeah, columbia used to get a lot of bashing here on SDN. It always made me laugh.

But on a serious note. Has anybody noticed that nobody seems to care about columbia anymore (bad AND good talk). It seems like there'd always be a bunch of people saying how awesome the school is, but not anymore. Also, it seems like a lot of the predents here torn between Penn and Columbia are choosing Penn. There isn't even a "Columbia Class of 2010 Thread," well none that i've seen. Whereas there's multiple Penn ones.

I know it's stupid to draw conclusions from SDN observations, but I really think that Columbia SDOS is in a bit of a funk. Among the Ivy League schools, i think it safely ranks third in terms of popularity/desirablility.

Nothing personal against the school, I 😍 columbia.

Its information like this that gives NYU its bad reputation.

NYU doesnt drop students...the students who repeatedly fail classes are asked to leave. Those students bring it upon themselves. The number is also not 1/3, its closer to 10%. But, again, its the student's fault for getting released from the program. Bottomline, if you go to NYU and do your work, you will not be dropped...thats the same at every school in the country. However, since NYU's class size is large, if 25 students fail, that seems like a huge number, when in reality, its 10% of their class...which isnt that big of a deal.

well, penn and columbia are oceans apart. penn is a solid dental school. columbia SDOS has some very serious problems in their program....i mean practically, one can call it SDOD (school of dental and oral didactics)...and other issues off course....also, i think many mature SDNers are going above and beyond the Ivy League factor and opting for long-term gains as opposed to short-term Ivy glamor.

Yeah, columbia is like harvard, only columbia's students don't match into specialty programs of their choice. Also, unlike harvard, columbia's classes are consistently 60%+ asian.

Supertrooper, aren't you already accepted to a school? Learn to be considerate towards the other other schools, because the schools are all networked together. Students at Columbia don't bash Upenn, and vice versa. In the end, we're all an extended family essentially. So be happy with your choice of school and shut your trap on Columbia, pretty please? 😍

*************
Bashing schools just shows your own insecurity and immaturity. It's stupid because:

1. No matter which school, you probably will encounter future colleagues who will have graduated from there. When you're trying to build up your network, are you going to say to them, "Oh, you graduated from THAT school? I heard blahbashbash about it."

2. it's RUDE. Just because the internet is anonymous doesn't give you the right to lose all sense of consideration. When you meet someone in real life and they tell you their undergrad/grad school, you would NEVER say the things I've read here on this forum. Unless if you were a total a-hole, and maybe I'm a nice dude, but I have a hard time believing there's this many dinguses in the world.

Above all, be CONSIDERATE as everyone on this forum will be a future colleague, and by then where each of us went to school won't even matter all that much. My dentist has his UPenn diploma framed and shoved into a corner somewhere, and even some of his patients who have seen him for 20+ years are still surprised to learn that he's a Penn graduate. Patients won't care about which school, they only care if you're good at what you do, and if you're NICE. Which is why it's so crucial to start practicing the NICE part now.

p.s. love your avatar, greenday

Oh lawd, here we go again. The beginnings of another Columbia bashing thread.... 🙄

The only school I enjoy bashing is Hahvahhhhd. I've been bashing it since high-school (10 people applied, none got accepted...even the valedictorian who was accepted into MIT and had like a 1580 SAT) They are a school for rich snobs, who thinks they are better than everyone in every way imaginable. Whether it be undergrads or grad schools. Their hockey team sucks equally as bad. That school is overrated period.

Yeah, i'm already in dental school. And sorrry, I didn't really set out to bash columbia, I was just making an observation. Like I said, I believe it's a great school; I just think it's reputation has suffered a bit recently to the point of apathy. Adios!! :luck:

school for only rich? NOT TRUE!

My sister got in, she is currently a sophmore, through hard work, good grades, and great SAT scores. WE ARE ANYTHING BUT RICH!

I think it is wrong and unfair to say such things as it takes away from the effort and hard work that students put to get accepted to Harvard. No doubt there are some students that have legacy and get in based on that.

Columbia SDOS is a big joke!! They mailed a rejection letter on the day after I called asking for a status update. And the best part is....I could care less, I would never want to go there, especially if they would do something as low as that. Trust me, there are much better dental schools out there!!

If you want more, I have some. I sent out a deposit to them two weeks ago and when I called to check they told me they never received one, so I had to fedex overnight another check of one grand. Guess what, the next day I got a call, they had the check but forgot to enter it into the system.
Great, frankly I wasn't surprised considering how disorganized they are.

Loma Linda gets a lot of it as well.

really? i thought i was the only one who makes comments about Loma.....I HATE PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS THAT TEACH SCIENCE AND YET PREACH FICTION....they take man's wisdom, innovation and all of man's work and associate it with that fictitious thing they call god or the laawwwd and thank god for it as opposed to thanking and praising man!!....

hm, Temple was a hot topic for awhile ...

I hope you're not serious. I'm not going to start some religious feud, but I ask that you be cautious of who you're bashing. This is a dental forum and not the place for that crap. Just because you're going into dentistry doesn't mean you can't be a Christian. By the way, God is capitalized.

i am entitled to my opinion. just because you people are running washington these days that does not mean that you can muzzle a private citizen. what are you gonna do? justice sunday against fightingspirit? what?....if i feel like making negative comments about Loma or its christian faculty or its christian mission, then i will make them with or without your consent.....for all i know , you can go speak in tongues about me.....i dont care and i am free....i am free to think for myself....

"be cautious of who you're bashing"....yeah i am scared right now....

besides, learn how to read: i did not say that christians cannot be dentists. i just said that the act of attributing man's work to god (sorry, not worth capitalization) is wrong and ungratefull to the hard-working men and women of this world.

Of course you can be religious and still be a dentist.

I think the problem is when you mix God and science and start attributing scientific phenomena to God. The two shouldn't mix in a science academic setting. Talk about it in philosophy.

As far as the modern and intellectual world is concerned, we evolved from micro-organisms.

well put audio.....well put....

i can understand it if a professional school that specializes in a field related to the humanities or social sciences associates itself with organized religion. but dentistry, biotech, or medicine....etc are fields that deeply involve both science and technology, both of which are man's most cherished achievements.

In my opinion, a sound argument is one that considers alternative arguments/opinions without 'ridiculing' what others consider valuable. You did not need to say that.

and to complement audio's remark about academics:

academia is all about free inquiry and free flow of ideas. so when a school sets up the answers for some of man's most fundemental questions from the start, then inquiry becomes no longer free. thus, more than half of the academic mission is undermined....

and please allow me to remind you that in the pre-civil war era, most american colleges were associated with christianity. these days, only a handfull are affiliated. this trend will continue (bush will go and so will this dark mideval cloud to give us back the beautiful bright free blue sky of the u.s). and in about 10 years, ther wont be bob jones, loma....etc.

Dear Duh!

Your comment is reasonable. But when the other person uses militant statements like “be careful who you’re bashing”, you’re left with no room to be considerate; hence the hard tone and my refusal to capitalize the g word. Statements like that come from people like Tom Delay.

Duh! Many people--including yourself--are being apologetic for Christians and overtly considerate of their feelings and what’s “valuable” to them. May I remind you that Christians are NOT considerate of other people’s feelings and “VALUABLE” things? May I remind you that Christians are working tirelessly to deny the secular citizen’s right to privacy and right to sexual expression. They are also violating women’s reproductive rights. They are trying to indoctrinate our children and younger siblings at school, injecting religion into bona fide science courses. If they have it their way, we won’t be able to think freely, we won’t be able to go to clubs, we won’t be able to dance or make love, teens would go pregnant left and right, pat Robertson would nuke Arabs, France, Canada, and Scandinavia. Is this the kind of world you are being apologetic for?

It is people’s overt kindness and irrational underestimation of the potential domestic and global harm of American Christians that have made it possible for them to take over Washington. Sorry but no sympathy for Christians. They don’t need it and they’ve got it going on. Save your sympathy for the disabled, the malnourished, the obese, the disenfranchised, the poor, the minorities, the women, the secularists and humanists, and the indoctrinated children. Don’t squander it on Christians. And remember, no matter how kind and mild mannered Christians seem at first glance, they will be anything but kind when they cast their votes on social or political issues.

You've got some serious logic issues going on with your anti-Christian crusade, man. If you want to judge an entire demographic by its worst examples, that's your prerogative, but it tends to say more about the critic's prejudices than their superior argumentative skills.

Also, thanks to everyone involved for keeping things civil so far. 👍

asphisits, i admit that there is a flaw in my argument, and that is the grouping of an entire demographic. i apologize to moderate christians. if you are one of them, then the apology goes to you either. sorry...

however, i kindly ask of you not to make it SEEM that most christians are moderate and a few are "worst examples"....you know VERY WELL that most chrisitans are indeed fundies and are voting as such. they move politically in large organized blocks. so as an individual, a christian may be kind and moderate but as a block (individuals are lost in the block...like a needle in a hay stack) they are anything but kind. I AM SURE YOU UNDERSTAND MY POINT HERE!!....BESIDES, PLEASE dont associate me with the word crusade...crusading is a christian practice.

I don't really see how "be careful who you're bashing" can be percieved as a "militant statement".

I hope you go to UCSF. You will fit in perfectly.

As for the most bashed on school. NYU .

As far as location. temple

philosophy. Arizona

and people still like to bring up UOP's 3 year program. 3 years, it must suck.

I wasn’t saying, “be cautious” in a threatening or silencing way. I was merely pointing out the fact that this is a dental forum, and you should refrain from using it in any manner other than what it is intended. This is a forum of professional nature, so let’s act like professionals and keep it that way. I can care less what you believe and why you do, just give others the same courtesy you’re entitled to. I’m sure the students at Loma Linda are very happy there, so what gives you the right to say otherwise? Take your own advice and let everyone have their own opinion. That’s all I’ve got to say about that. Good luck to everyone in dental school.

fair enough...back to the initial subject.....

You can pretty much replace "christian" with liberal in your rant and you sound exactly like the people you are trying to bash.

Also, sorry to burst your bubble, but being christian has no bearing on someone's ability to work in health care or science. Unless you study evolutionary biology or anthropology it is 100% irrelevant what your personal beliefs are.

Wow, it's amazing the type of people and personalities we will encounter in d-school. Good luck to all of us!

As of the school bashing, I think everyone should just stop and worry about their own dental careers and the school they will attend. No matter what school you end up at, if you work hard enough you will achieve your ultimate goals. There is no point in bashing schools.
