What are some interview questions you dislike the most? I really don't like it when they ask "why did you apply to dental school and not medical school?" They are two very different professions. I mean, is there an obvious reason why I should have chosen to apply to medical school?

Here are some:
What are some of your weaknesses?
What is your biggest failure?
Describe your ideal career?
Do you believe you are overqualified?

I got this one last year: "would you still choose dentistry if you got paid minimum wage?" i hated having to answer that!

These weren't from a dental school interview as this is my first time applying but these are some from interviews i had with internships etc. that I hated answering!:

"Do you think you are a minority (mind you I am half asian)?"
"Do you like your undergraduate school/how is your experience?"
"Describe a time where you had to make a moral decision"
"How do you feel about working in a medically underserved area?"

How would you answer that !? ""would you still choose dentistry if you got paid minimum wage?"" That is a toughy!

how about name five countries surrounding france and their captiols....that's a redic question fo sho

The minimum wage one is easy if providing health care isn't about making money to you

I think the failure and moral decision ones are tough too

I'm a pretty simple person. if i didn't have any debt, my mom was financially stable, and i was allowed to travel to under served areas to treat people... then no i wouldn't mind being paid crap.

hows that for an answer?

i know money shouldn't be a primary motive when choosing a career. but lets face it..money is a necessity. it shouldn't be treated as an end, but simply a means to an end. for example being able to pay of debt or supporting you family. those are duties in life that come before your own personal interests.

its a good answer....u may want to refine it a bit 😉

"Describe a time where you had to make a moral decision"

-my friends and i were driving down a road on the right lane i look to my left and there is some 80 year old man in an electronic chair driving on the left lane. we were like wtf LOL... i debated to help or not. i stopped the car and ran up to him trying to convince him to go back into the sidewalk. he must of had alzheimers or something cuz he was not understanding anything i was saying and he kept speaking jibberish. so we basically just ran beside him as he drove until we finally got him to turn into the sidewalk lol.

We all felt really good after helping him. 10 minutes later we were driving somewhere else and saw some dude pushing his car across the road cuz it was dead. decided to help him too. bam, knocked 2 good deeds out in one day 😀

hows that for a moral decesion?

Where did he go once he went on the sidewalk?

I hope he didn't go towards the interstate on-ramp or something. 😱

😛

"So, tell us about yourself?"
"Tell us a joke?"

another lady came by and took it from there. she called the old mans family. apparently this has been a repeated thing with him lol

it really was! I told them that I wasn't interested in the money as I am helping out in ERs for free now and working at minimum wage at a pharmacy. I also said its not about being successful by making money but being able to make a difference in people's health and lives and acheiving a sense of self satisfaction.

Yes I would choose dentistry if I was only paid minimum wage. Dentistry is way cooler than folding clothes!

Maybe I am thinking too deep into the question and sure I would work in dentistry for minimum wage because at the end of the day I am really doing something that makes a difference yadda yadda, but my problem would be would it be worth investing 4+years of your life and being put in horrendous 200k+debt to work a minimum wage job?! how would you provide for a family, lifestyle, open your own office etc?! I would totally work for minimum wage if I wasn't going to be out 4+years of my life and put into debt....otherwise..I think I may rather fold clothes...even if I hate it...Minimum wage dentistry just wouldn't be feasible for the career itself factoring all the costs you'd need to pay considering the upkeep of your own office etc. just saying. I agree with dent001.

i agree, no one is gonna beleive you if you say yea i'll work for basically nothign because i love helping ppl, chaning lives, and all the other BS. you gotta give a real answer. there is no way i'd go into dentistry if i was gonna be in an enormous debt like that. this is the real world and they wanna make sure your with reality and not in a fantasy land.

I personally hate the favorite tv shows, movies, and books questions...i'm not a huge fan of anything in that regard lol. i got other interests.

i feel like jokes need to be spontaneous to be funny. looking at someone and being like tell me a joke is just asking for corny central

as for the minimum wage thing i agree with rickblas and dent001, i would do it if it didn't mean 5 years (NYS requires a year residency) of my life and 200,000+ dollars of debt. i mean i make minimum wage at the daycare i work at now and you'd be dead before paying of the d school debt. my parents have provided a good life for me and i want to do the same for my children, and i want them to be able to provide even better for my grandkids

not to mention, if it was minimum wage how on earth would you be able to run a practice while in such debt so you really wouldnt be able to help people anyway...

👍

I had a friend who was asked a question similar to this at Creighton (he interviewed at Idaho State through the IDEP program though). The interviewer told my friend that the correct answer was no, you would not work for "free". At first one might be inclined to "please" the interviewer and tell them what you think they want to hear. But being honest and having an opinion that shows you think for yourself goes a long way in impressing the person interviewing you.

right!......its important to come across that dentistry is something you are passionate about while still being realistic.......i would tell them that dentistry in my mind is about helping others and not about the dollar bills....but it simply would not be feasible in todays world to go to school that long and accrue that level of debt......simply not feasible
