I'm looking over the general chem subject test 4 from Kaplan and I'm confused on a question.
Which is most electronegative?
a) 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1
b) 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p1
c) 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p3
d) 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5
e) 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6

My answer was E b/c it is the furthest to the right on the periodic table, which means it's more electronegative, but the answer kaplan got was D.

E is inert.

the answer is D. E is wrong b/c E has complete orbitals and is stable so it does not need any additional electrons. The additional electron would go to the next s orbital. It is true that as you go to the right on the periodic table, the EN increases but the trend stops at the halogens.

E is Argon.
D is Chlorine.
I think this is right, don't have a periodic table w/ me.
The halogens are most electronegative. This is a trick question, and I missed it when I took that test. It's a trap, b/c going strictly by the over and up increasing electronegativity choice E should be right. But, you have to stop and see what the elements are. Argon isn't electronegative, it hates to react. Good luck on your DAT. 🙂
