Most irritating fellow interviewee...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sigma - that was nice of you, to try and put the guy at ease.

When I interviewed at Columbia I felt weird because my school was the least-fancy of all the ones listed on the interview room door. And all the other interviewees kept talking about their long list of Ivy interviews. It was funny - I mentioned that I felt like I'd overdone it by applying to ~15 schools and the Harvard guys said they all applied to ~20. I guess if you don't lower yourself to apply to state schools you have to spread out if you want to get in somewhere! (This isn't meant as a crack at people who attend Harvard; the guys were really nice. I just thought the differing cultural expectations were amusing.)

I am one of the students that gives tours to interviewees @ Wayne. I think it is hilarious seeing this from the other side. I gave a tour not long ago where all but one were from UMich, the last one was from a school in the same league (can't remember what tho...) and invariably one of them asks me where I went to undergrad. I replied Oakland U (smaller school in Rochester, MI...only about 12 students a year there end up going to med school). So for the rest of the day most of them seemed like "well if she could get in from such a $h!t school, then "I" should have no problem" A couple of them even started comparing EC's and then asking me what I had done ***rolls eyes***

Not surprised at all. God this school can suck

Perhaps you havent ever talked to a male before. Better get used to it ms. purity.

The rest of this thread is pretty funny

Huh?? Why should she get used to it? That's like... here, get used to my halitosis... I dont' understand the condescending comments to this poster who was not pleased with some sexist remarks. But I have noticed that those who are telling the poster to just deal with it because it's okay seem to be mostly male anyway... No female would respond like that.

Take it a different way- if the males out there walked by some gals discussing relative *ahem* proportions of some guys, and then looked at you to size you up...

The point is that that attitude generalizes to become a general misogynistic attitude, and it's just not very damn nice.

So there.
🙂

There was this dumb**** girl at Yale. Now imagine the whitest of all white girls asking the director of admissions about what kinds of diversity awareness programs the multicultural affairs office had to offer. The Director was stumped, and the rest of us, especially the minority kids, all just kind of stared at her.

I understand what you're saying, but I guess I disagree somewhat. I think we females would be having many more conversations just like that group of guys was having--if only there were a few decent looking male public figures in our society!

For every Janet Reno, there are ten John Ashcrofts! Yuck!

at a northwestern interview, two seniors from a university that shall remain nameless and i started chatting on the student tour. when i reported that i had graduated from college in 2000 (yes, another non-trad) they exclaimed in a rather loud voice inside an elevator jam-packed with interviewees,

"OMIGOD!"
"You are SOOO old!"
"Yeah, I was like, graduating from high school when you graduated!"
"oh wait, no I was still IN high school when you graduated!"

maybe i am being hypersensitive, but that sure got under my skin... 😡

For all I know, I may have been that "white girl" at Yale, but despite outward appearances (most people think I look German or French), I am Puerto Rican, and have STRONG feelings with regard to the improvement of minority access to higher education. In particular, Yale is a particularly well-endowed school, and yet the New Haven area has a high level of poverty and crime. It seems obvious that there is a serious socio-economic and cultural disparity that has nothing to do with the availability money. Not to come off as a hippy, fuzzy, do-gooder, but I feel the need to reach out to other minorites and show them that one can reach their goals. I hope to be a good example to other latinos proving that despite economic and cultural differences, Ivy league is within reach. Hence, it is important to see that some time and money has already been dedicated to promoting diversity and providing communitee outreach to an area that truly needs it.

sorry for the rant, i get the stupid, "gee but you don't look puerto rican" bit ALL THE TIME

Someone in a NU interview I went to called for a GPA and MCAT roll call while in the waiting room. He was ignored.

Then is Temple or Drexel "UC Philly?" We could go down the list to all of the lower tiered private med schools and make them unofficial UC's.

i think even putting a "uc" in front of those schools' names is giving them way too much credit.

Ha.

My advanced age didn't slap me in the face like that, but rather came as a slow dawning realization. I was on the subway with another fellow interviewee after my interview (he happened to be from Columbia. very nice chap), and I found out that he went to the same high school as my ex-boyfriend. I asked him what year he graduated, and he replied "2001". It took a few moments of shocked silence before it hit me that I was interviewing with people who left high school when I left college.

I could've done my undergraduate education two times over and be here today.

No. Putting a "UC" in front of Riverside is giving a school way too much credit. KIDDING (not really)

When I went to my interview at NYMC, I took a cab from the White Plains airport to the school. On the way there, the cabbie asks me if I'm from California. I say, "no, why?". He says, "Oh, I just drive a lot of kids from California that can't get into UCLA." Great way to curb my excitement. I guess all the Californians complain to the White Plains cabbies. At least someone is listening to them.

. Consoling and ferrying around the Cali kids must be a cottage industry there.

Interviewed at, what they kept refering to as "the Harvard of the South" and I must agree the undergrads interviewing from this school were certainly annoying. I was chatting with this pretty mellow guy from Columbia, and the undergrad bursts in with, "So what other schools have you two interviewed at?" I just shut him down with a direct look and, "Where're not doing that." I think it's the best way to handle the situation.

hahaha, I love it!

I definitely agree here. I really disliked Columbia, partially because of the school and their elitist mentality, but also because of the other people in my interview group. A lot of people that were self-important and way overconfident. When visiting med schools one of my most important criteria is what the students seem like...I could never go somewhere where people acted like, in the parlance of this thread, asshats. So I think that directly translates to what the interview group is like because some of those people will be classmates. And if there are some in our group, there are bound to be others.

Why is Columbia being so snobby when in fact it barely makes into top 10 plus the place is so darn expensive to be? UCSD although top 15 (top 6 in primary) was modest and sensible in its demeanor. I liked that very much.

I'm not trying to attack your point of view here but I just wanted to comment that I don't mind when people ask where else I have interviewed. I feel that it's not because they're trying to size you up, it's just genuine curiosity. I ask that same question only to see if I can get feedback about schools that I might be interested in but haven't visited. Not to mention that it's a great way to spark conversation. I'm sure there are uber-competitive med applicants out there trying to get the scoop on my app but for the most part I find the topic to be fun to chat about.

I'd really like to know more about this "elitist mentality." I can't say I see it much here, but perhaps if I got a few more specifics about your interviewing experience, I would understand. I'm good friends with our admissions rep and we are always trying to make it a more positive experience for our interviewees.

However -- I will say that both of the above comments are unfounded. I won't even touch the one about rankings because a) it's completely false and b) who cares about rankings anyway; however... we may be expensive, but as one of the oldest med schools in the country we have a huge endowment resulting in very nice financial aid. My point: I just have a lot of love in my heart for Columbia, and people shouldn't take what they read here at face value without getting the real facts 🙂

acl3623, I just had tell you that you have the silliest, cutest icon I have ever seen.

I've actually met a lot of cool people on the trail. I haven't had a really bad experience, although there are some Ivy League types who just smiles at you in a condescending manner. But some of the nicest people I have met have been from Brown. At my Einstein interview, there were four people from Brown, and they were all very genuine and engaging people. I met this one cute chick from Johns Hopkins who kept reassuring me she is not assinine like the other pre-med from Johns Hopkins. Fun to talk to too. But inevitably, I would run into some of these asses others have spoken of.

Are you ridiculous? Women say this crap all of the time---probably not as much as men, but they still say it. What woman hasn't swooned about Brad Pitt, Clooney, Cruise, etc..?? come on, women do it all of the time. You sound like another one of those girls that tries to say that looks don't matter at all. Get real.

And is it really sexist to say that a woman is attractive? I do not think they were applying that she couldn't do the job.

Your statements make me wonder if you root for that psycho in Nip/Tuck that cuts people because physical beauty obscures true beauty. Yeah, I bet you do. Sicko.

They didnt look at the girl to size her up, that would be something to whine about. Talking about how attractive females are is not at all.

Also: are you seriuosly suggesting that talking about how attractive some women are leads to a 'general mysogynistic attitude.' Thats such a load of crap lol.. strange world we live in, where its socially unacceptable to be a man. but thats a whole other rant..

some girls i know talk more about guys than some guys i know talk about girls. i think you can talk about how attractive someone is and blah blah blah...but then again there is that fine line between that and sexual harassment.....

Sicko? Thanks for insulting me based on my standing up for not talking about women/men as pieces of meat. I guess I have been exposed to a higher standard of people, who do not generally speak like that. And no, the comment the poster talked about had nothing to do with attractiveness- rather, the comment was something like "yeah, I'd do her" or not do her as the case may be.. So to determine that I'm a sicko from this post- wow, that's a lot of stretch. Anyway, I've never heard of the show you're talking about, and my boyfriend is very sexy 🙂 so I'm not really into denying physical attractiveness when it's there, but I don't go around discussing the f*ck-ability of random members of the opposite sex. Rise above the animals.

I think it is really interesting how the tone of someone's writing can be misinterpreted in these forums. For example, on my post. I began slightly annoyed with the opinions that were stated by lizbjrddnr, but then I became more amused with myself as I began to make more and more ridiculous statements. Thus, by the end of my post, anything that I was saying was merely for effect.

So rest assured, I do not think that you would cheer for a psychotic killer on a TV series on FX about two plastic surgeons in Miami. You probably don't want models mutilated and raped. So I'll take it back, you are not a sicko.

Your audience is a population of people who love to be right. This means arguing constantly. I'd say that 90 percent of what is written in jest in pre-allo is misunderstood.
