What do you all think is the most up and coming med school...I talking about a school that was or is mid tier but is zooming up the ranks?

This should be interesting...

University of Kentucky is building a big new hospital to be done in 2011 and an whole new health professions campus to be complete in the next 10 years I think. I don't know if that will make it "zoom up the ranks" but it couldn't hurt much.

Schools that have built bright and shiny new hospitals/med schools that have recently opened / are opening soon:

UCD
USC
UCLA
Wisconsin

Some schools that seem to have moved up a lot at least in UNWR (which isn't that great an indicator, but whatever):

Washington
Case
BU

I was really impressed when I toured this school. Sure, they could use a little updating, their facilities are not as modern as some would like and I think they were planning on renovating their library but one of the things that impressed me the most was their DMC campus (which is the nation’s largest single-campus medical school), it's right in the middle of everything, their PBL and rotations can probably rival that of many top tier schools.🙂

I have no doubt that the students here get an excellent education. I felt a real sense of reality the short time I was there and the students and staff were super nice and friendly.🙂

Wayne is a great school; they let in a lot of people from incredibly diverse backgrounds and give a great education. Everyone who I know who goes/went there loved it. The reason they don't get a high ranking is they tend to let in TOO many people, especially those who have had a tougher time in school for various reasons. Therefore, their average numbers are lower, because they are relatively skewed. Also, NIH doesn't like to give money to the school because it isn't on the cutting edge of research anymore, because most excellent researchers don't want to go live in/near Detroit. If they want to stay in Michigan, they go somewhere else. Great school, overall, but definitely needs some more money from somewhere/somebody to upgrade everything, and make it really top-notch.

Yeah thats there ultimate goal though - top 20 by 2020.

UIC. this school is awesome...and i'd attend if accepted. top choice

I'm gonna have to go with Wayne State in Detroit as one of the most underrated med schools, I think this school is ranked too low. Yes, the city of Detroit has a negative stigma associated with it and I admit to not being too thrilled about living in the city but like any large city, you eventually get over the stereotypes.😳

I know your pumping your potential school, but really, Wayne's situation with the DMC is still an absolute mess (and pretty much the reason why I chose to put up the $$$ and leave the state). Duggan is still in charge of the place, and he's already managed to kill off a couple residency programs as a result. (something that simply should not happen). The new association with MSU COM is even more troubling.

Thats what I was going to post 😉

Based on their own literature it seems like both USC Keck and Brown feel like they'll be moving up in the ranks.

I honestly didn't know about this ...especially the MSU thing, why on earth would they want to do that? I've got to look into this development a little further.

As far as pumping up my "potential" school goes, uh no. I was just surprised at how nice it was, in spite of the low rankings, that's all. I was a little afraid of Detroit, I know it's silly, but you know how Detroit is portrayed in the news. Plus we got lost on the way there because the Lodge was closed and we ended up near the old Tiger Stadium. Anyway, you've got to admit, the DMC campus is pretty neat. 🙂

ha...that's nothing compared to where I ended up on the way to my interview. 94 was completely closed for scheduled construction and I had to take a rather interesting detour through the southwest side of Detroit... I locked my doors to say the least.

UCSD's medical center is being completely redone with millions in the next 4 years i believe to get brand new machines, newer hospital, etc.

It's anything but low tier but i think it's going to be on the rise in the next decade or two to be one of the top ones in the nation. I could be biased because i attend there though

🙂Yeaaah for Wayne. I'm interviewing there next week.
I lived in midtown Detroit for 2 years (the cathedral towers across from Karmanos and the Park Shelton) and it's really not that unsafe. There are just a couple of places that you need to watch out for, like any city. A few neighborhoods around the Henry Ford hospital buildings are pretty bad...e.g. on my way to work there one day I saw a homeless guy lying on the sidewalk and I could have sworn he was dead.

I digress. From what I heard while I was at WSU, the med school is great. I suppose I'll find out next Thursday.

I'm going to go with Pitt. I interviewed there yesterday, and all the students talked about how they were throwing money at student satisfaction stuff and anyone looking to do any research at all. The hospital system is massive and integrated with dental, pharmacy, nursing, and public health schools, so there are opportunities to do about everything. They have a huge patient simulator lab that was really cool. I was told they're 2nd in the country or something for NIH funding. And they just built nice new housing with priority given to first years. My student interviewer flat out told me they were trying to attract the cream of the crop and become a big name school. I'm not implying they're not a good school already, but before I started applying, I didn't even know there was a University of Pittsburgh.

I just saw the OP asked for formerly mid tier schools. Don't know if Pitt meets that criteria, but they it seems like they are aiming for tip top tier.

Hah, when they had 96 completely shut down I got forced to exit the freeway and proceeded to get lost while following the Detours. Ended up in a really run down neighborhood and it was about 2 a.m. I witnessed a group of ~5-6 brothers all circled around one guy on the ground and they were all kicking him. 😱 I had two girls in the car with me at the time and they were seriously freaking out. Gotta love Detroit.

Other than that I haven't had any bad experiences in Detroit.

That is definitely my least favorite sport.....beating up homeless people. Booo.😡

I have to agree with you - but that might be because I interviewed there as well and that is clearly the impression they are trying to make. The whole "write your own ticket" thing in terms of research and travel is pretty impressive. They're not shooting for top tier, they're shooting for "the top." They're 9th in NIH funding though. Which is not too shabby.

The HSM: Hogwarts school of medicine 👍

So are you indicating that you can get in based on travel experience and research? I could understand research why travel? The reason I ask is that I have been to 8 countries on 4 continents and will be doing my second study abroad this summer!

Mildly related... but anyone know what the exact deal on the upcoming Commonwealth School of Medicine is in Scranton, PA? I would love to go to school 45 minutes from home. I hear its opening in 2009, they have half the funds they need, and plenty of faculty wanting to teach. Any ideas whats going on and if it'd be "suicide" to apply to such a new school.

UCI Medical Center is close to completing a new building which has been under construction for years now.

I think he/she means there is lots of funding for travel and research once you're in. There are grants and stuff if you want to do global health research or international electives.

Yeah the hospital I believe is supposed to open this Spring, and they're about to start building a brand new state of the art clinical training building which is supposed to be done in 2010.
