Hi all, I am looking for some advice on possibly applying and (granted I get acceped) moving out of state of attend Opt. School.
I will be applying to schools in the fall of 2009..and my goal is at UH. Not only for the reputation they carry but the fact that I won't need to pay out-of-state tuition.
Anyhow, if, unfortunately, I don't get accepted, is it wise to also apply at the other schools surrounding TX or is it not worth it in the long run since I'll be paying so much more for out-of-state tuition? It would be a huge deal moving my entire family out of state, so I don't want to apply, get interviews, and then realize I am going to just hopefully reapply to UH the following year in hopes of being accepted.
I will be an optometrist someday, but is it worth it to pay out of state tuition?

Well, I HAVE to go out of state for optometry school, I don't have a choice! But having a family does influence your decision. If you know deep down that that's the only school you want to go to, you may as well only apply there. I only wanted to go to SCO but I applied to a second school just in case.. but I knew if I didn't get in I'd wait til next year.

Certain schools are not that much more expensive for out of state students compared to in-state. I'm not an expert, but I know that SCO happens to be one of these schools with out of state tuition significantly lower than other schools. Also something to consider is that many schools (including Indiana) give scholarship preference to out of state students. I would check out the other schools that you are interested in to see exactly what price difference you would be looking at. Another factor to consider is the cost of living such as rent or home purchase.
