I'm trying to figure out what is the best option for moving. Has anyone used one of those "you pack, we move" type of mover? Please let me know what you've found to be best for the price.

You MUST visit this forum: www.movingscam.com. It has been mentioned on SDN before, and the moderator of that site actually posts on SDN from time to time (since so many professional students move great distances).

It has LOTS of posts and ratings for many moving companies. You'll find that some have exceptional ratings while others are nothing more than scams and money pits.

I'm using Broadway Express (broadwayexpress.net) to move from Arizona to New York in a couple of months. It received the highest ratings from users on that site I mentioned. The price was also not much more than renting a UHaul, and when you factor in gas (which will be $3/gallon in 2-3 weeks) you'll find it is actually cheaper to do what you are suggesting. I calculated that gas alone would cost me over $1,000, and a truck would be $1,400. That's more than Broadway Express is charging me and I don't have to drive a friggin' truck across the nation.

When I moved I bought a trailer and then sold it after I was done with it. This way all it really costed me was the gas money to drive and I think I took like a $50 hit on the sale value. Not a bad deal if you have a car that can tow the load and the money to invest in a trailer. If you do go this route buy a used trailer so you can actually make your money back when you sell it.
