Hello,
I'm moving to Philly (to be more exact, University City) and I have a few questions (prob stupid since i've never moved before). I'm bringing a U-Haul for furniture, if there are no spots available outside my apt building, will we be able to double-park?

Secondly, if we need to park somewhere (i.e. eat dinner), where can you even park a U-Haul in the city? When i visited for my interview, i had to park in a parking deck...which i'm pretty sure did not have surplus parking spots.

Various cities, especially larger cities, have very specific rules regarding parking large trucks. I get the impression that your truck isn't too large, but certainly bigger than an average truck. If it's a large truck (20+ feet), then I'd recommend contacting the local police department to clarify their rules/regulations. Some days you can't park on a certain side of the street, etc., etc.

Double parking isn't generally a problem when it comes to moving in or out if the truck is small. People understand that people move in and out, and they are generally willing to work with you and be nice (at least for a short period of time).

If I were you I'd park in the lot of the place where you are eating, assuming it isn't packed. Another good place to park is at a hotel/motel. Usually they have plenty of open space around back. Good luck with it all. I just recently moved from Arizona to NY, so I know what you are going through.

I don't know which area you're moving to but in many places you can get away with double parking or parking in a non parking space to unload your truck. If you are double parking or parking in a non parking space you must keep a driver with the truck at all times. The Philadelphia Parking Authority is really good at giving tickets and towing cars but if there is someone with the vehicle they will probably ignore you or give you a warning. One time there was a guy double parked on a busy street during a rush period and the PPA told him to move the truck, but that is the worst that I've seen.

As far as where to park, I don't know which area you are moving to so I can't help you there, but good luck in Philly.

Philly is tough to park around. Most apt complexes will have areas for UHauls etc , but I would recommend parking your UHaul and taking a cab out in the town. UCity is lots of fun. I loved it here and Philly for the last four years. Going to miss it, luckily I will be close by in DC so I can make a day trip from time to time.

You will have a blast here.

I got a ticket once when I parked outside of that giant assed condom store in center city. Under "location" on the ticket, it actually read "Condom Kingdom" and said I was 2 hours overdue. I can just imagine the court clerk thinking about some dude inside the condom store for 2+ hours....so intrigued, he just couldn't leave....

hey guys, thanks for your replies! i will be moving onto spruce st, so hopefully it won't be too bad!

my roommates and I using comcast service.. the package deal to be exact (cable and internet).

I was just living at 12th and Spruce a couple days ago. Now I'm in Milwaukee 😉 I've often seen people park their U-Hauls up and unload right on the sidewalk if they were moving in on the right (northern) side of the street. On the opposite side of the street there is regular (mostly metered) parking hopefully you can find a place to put it if you are moving in on that side. I was fortunate when I was moving out there was an open meter right in front of my apt. So i basically fed it all day while I was packing and part of the next morning until I left.:luck:

There are plenty of walking places to go eat at in CC, so you won't have to park it. If you wanted you could also drive out of the city a bit to roxborough or manayunk or upper darby and grab a bite in one of these places.

My favorite: order pizza!

As far as parking, get there early so traffic doesn't overwhelm your options.
I'm with hockey dentist (how is your summer man?) go with high speed cable from comcast.
