Anyone moving across the country for med school? From where to where? How?

I'll start:
I'm moving from LA to St. Louis, and I'm thinking of getting one of those containers that you pack, and then the company picks it up and moves it to your destination for you. Any other suggestions?

I'm moving cross country (again). NY to LA. I'm going to start shipping books and a few other things book rate soon. When my parents visit later this month they will each be going home with a big box. It's always rough moving whether it's down the street or across the country. I can't wait to stay in the same place for more the 2 years!

Some friends of mine just did a cross country move using those (Pods?) and I think it worked out really well.

looks like I'll be moving from new york to st louis as well.

Interesting... I've never heard of these. Do you have the link to a company or two that does this?

Man...apparently "pods" doesn't serve my area! Book rate it is.

Thanks mongrel. That service looks nifty! Kinda expensive, though. 😳

OP, the last time I moved, I did it in two phases:

Phase 1: I purchased a Student Advantage Card, giving me 50% off parcel shipping from Greyhound. This mode of shipping is crazy, crazy cheap. So I packed up all my non-vital and non-breakable stuff and sent it via the cheapest parcel route over the course of about 3 days. Once your packages get to the other end, Greyhound will hold your stuff for about a week (check on this) so you can plan accordingly.

Phase 2: Mom and Dad rented a mini-van, into which we packed all my expensive and/or easily breakable stuff. Then, all of us went on a cross-country drive. Once we arrived at the other end, we did a few runs to Greyhound, picking up all the boxes from the local station.

My method probably cost about 50% less than the estimate I got at pods.com, but it's certainly a bigger pain in the a$$. What's your budget like?

If you have a moderately powerful vehicle (I've got a GMC Sonoma) you could rent a U-Haul trailer. I did this the last time I moved. I rented whichever trailer is just big enough for a queen-size bed and about everything else you need for a one bedroom apartment. Worked awesome and also pretty dern cheap!

Moving from the Northwest to LA....just a straight shot down I-5.

Perhaps moving Michigan to Texas. Luckily I don't have too much furniture to move - hopefully there's an Ikea nearby. Otherwise, those pods look like a good idea...

I just got a pods quote at it was $4037 does that seem right? If that's the case it might be cheaper to buy all new stuff...

Yeah i drive a Civic 😛 So towing is not going to work.. maybe just getting a U-Haul truck.. but i really don't wanna drive 1600 miles...

I might be moving from Colorado to St. Louis for SLU or philly...still waiting to hear from NYMC. Anyway I'm starting to worry about moving, but I'm still just trying to accept that I am moving. I haven't even started to think about how.

I'm just planning on renting a small Uhaul and driving myself with one of my family members following in my car. Then they can drive themselves back. 😀

Although, to be honest I am somewhat of a procrastinator and still haven't fully thought out any logistics.

i used www.upack.com

It is actually run by a massive shipping company. It worked out well for me because their shipping units are about 1/2 the side of the Pods units.

Just wanted to weigh in quickly... even though this thread is old. I've tried a few national moving companies and their performance was disappointing. Recently, I started using a regional Portable on Demand Storage. FlexBox is located in Philadelphia and I've had a bunch of friends from Penn Vet use them. Inexpensive and really good service too.😉

I just finished a move from NY to FL and there are a bunch of great companies, you just have to look at their reviews online and choose the one that makes sense to you. My husband and I used www.citizenmovers.com and found some great movers that got all our things delivered without any problems and we were happy with the price. Good luck!

I moved this last time with PODS. If you have a house full of stuff, kids, dishes, dining, living room etc. There is no cheaper way. Plus, I knew I wouldn't have housing where I moved right away so my stuff is in controlled temp storage until I request it brought to me. BTW, I have a piano too so lots of headache.

The quote I got from a moving company was close to $15,000. I paid $2500 for the PODS service. I have moved across the country three times. The last 2 times was with Uhaul/Penske for about $5000 each time but its a real pain if you don't have anywhere to live and have to take the truck back.

An Update on my PODS story

I moved across the country for the 4th time in 8 years and this time used the PODS since I knew I wouldn't have housing where I was going. So they brought the container to my house in Texas, no problem there. It cost me $2500 for them to bring the container and take it to storage in Denver. So I spent the last 7 months paying for storage of my PODS at $300/month - of which I had no problem with.

So.. I ended up moving to southern Colorado 7 months after I loaded my belongings onto a PODS container and requested it finally to be brought to my house, which is on a major interstate 150 miles south of the storage facility in Denver. So called PODS and it seems they only deliver to 80 miles south of Denver, not 150 and they would not bring my stuff to me. They did finally agree to make special arrangements to the tune of another $4500 to bring it that extra 60 miles!! Crazy. I ended up driving to Denver, renting a truck from Penske for $100, going to the PODS warehouse, unloading my PODS, loading everything onto the truck and driving it myself to my house for a total cost of $180 including gas!! Now tell me why would it take the PODS truck $4500 to drive that same road???

Beware of PODS and be sure they deliver to your destination before you go with them. It would have been cheaper and less hassle to get a truck and do it myself in the first place. So when we told the guy at Penske in Denver the story he was like, "isn't that what PODS is for so you don't have to get a truck??" Go figure.😕
