I guess this is a statement/question. My daughter applied to 5 schools. Emory, GW, U of M, UNC and Temple. So far she has gotten into 3 of them. Emory,GW and Temple. We really want U of M because she goes there now. So the question is it true that if you go to a school for under grad.....that school doesn't like to except them for Grad School?

No, not always true. Although, I do believe if your daughter (the applicant) is concerned about her chances at a graduate school, she should be the one posting on this forum. Trust me, it helps with the waiting nerves haha

Rejected from UT 🙁 After seeing someone else get offered a chance to have their app reviewed by a different department, I hoped for the same if epidemiology wasn't a good fit, but nope.
What would even be a good plan of attack for applying next year? Trying for a less science-heavy discipline? I'm not sure that taking summer classes would be enough to fix this application. Maybe behavioral health fits a social science heavy background?
Either way, majorly disappointed.

Hi! I went to Emory for undergrad and was accepted there. I don't think it matters, I assumed it could only help rather than hurt, but I'm no expert!

BU has been my focal point for a while, since undergrad (2012). If Harvard, UPenn or Emory offer decent scholarship, I would go. Honesty, all are a step up from my undergrad school and I'd like to leave Houston 😉. I'm looking most at the final cost, currently. You?
 
My application was complete at UMich HBHE at the end of November and I have heard nothing. Rejection seems likely, yes?

Thanks for responding! I noticed my application status changed from "admissions team review" to "academic team review," so I guess that's something. I'm just so nervous and the waiting is killing me. I hope you hear from them soon too!
 
Got my acceptance to UT Houston in epi!

On another note - did anyone else applying to GWU Epi get that email yesterday about the new concentration? I can't decide if I want to switch my application but it seems like a cool program! I'd love to hear other people's thoughts

Congrats on UT! I got that email as well. I looked up the curriculum for the global health epi and disease control program and the coursework is a combination of epi and global health classes -- which actually appealed to my interest more! My concern however was, if my app is moved from epi to global epi then does that move me to the back of the line to be reviewed?? Because as of now I have a 2 week wait ahead of me before I hear back, maybe even three with the snowstorm! I'm not sure if I'm willing to start a whole new 5 week wait 🙁 I applied to for summer semester so I'm really anxious to know what's my life's going to be in the next couple of months! lol

Also, since I already applied, my statement of purpose was really tailored to epidemiology and didn't go into much of my global health interest. I touched on it, but nothing significant. If I switch my programs, I wonder if that would work against me in the admissions process or the department is going to be lenient on stuff like that since it's a new program.

Overall, I think switching programs would allow me to take some variety of classes than just pure epi classes (which I don't mind) but at the end of the day I think we'd be qualified for the same internships and job opportunities no matter which program we choose.

I'd love to hear your thoughts as well.

could someone help me understand the course length? its a 3 semester program right? so i understand it will last 18 months? Please help

Wow those were EXACTLY the same thoughts I had! I sent an email last night to get a little more info about it, especially the timeline and the SoP thing but I haven't heard back yet. Also, one of my professors at George Mason works at GWU also and is in the global health department so if I ever get back to school from this snowstorm I'm going to try to get some information from her.

I applied for the fall semester, and because I sent new transcripts my application timeline was basically reset so I'm only two weeks in so I have a little more flexibility on that than you. But same with the SoP, I wrote mine about a domestic, chronic issue and really want to send a new one if I can! I feel like it would be easier to get into this program because it's new though, and they need students to establish it?

Cost is a huge factor for me as well. The way I see it is that the acceptances in Jan/Feb are "soft" acceptances. Once the financial aid offers come in March, that's when you can tell which schools really want you there as a student. That being said, here are my top 3

1. Michigan
2. UNC
3. GWU

Michigan and UNC have researchers that I would like to work with. GWU has the best location when it comes to working in health policy.

I'm curious to see what the rest of my fellow applicants consider your top 3 and why.

The new program seems like a great opportunity for those seeking internationally focused gigs. I have a strong data analytics background and my interests lie in purely epi and programming courses and I'm not necessarily interested in taking my skills abroad. If global health is more of what you are interested in, I would give it a shot! I really do not believe that would hurt your chances of admission.
 
For those that have been accepted to BU.
Is anyone going to the accepted students event? I can't go for the main day (Sometime in March and April), so i'm going to the "small group Friday event" on Feb 12th.

Depends on the school! Some may offer assistantships as part of their admission decision, some allow you to apply before deciding on a school, and some others require that you matriculate first. Check financial aid websites per school - they may list requirements for applying. Good luck!

Anybody waiting for a decision from Tulane's Tropical Medicine program? I applied for the MPH&TM and received an email yesterday stating that I am eligible for the MSPH and they wanted to know if I wanted to be considered for both. Did anyone else receive a similar email?

Hahaha yessss, I know exactly what you mean about "soft" acceptances. I don't qualify for most financial aid, and it's really hard to justify $65,000+ in student loans for an MPH.

For me, my top school is also Michigan. I am REALLY drawn to their focus on health disparities, and a lot of their research interests me. There are so many opportunities in Detroit, and the school has great global health opportunities, which I am also passionate about. Altogether, it feels like the perfect fit. It's that out-of-state tuition that does NOT feel like a good fit. Tulane is my second choice as far as "fit" goes. UT Houston, on the other hand, doesn't have a lot of research I'm interested in, and the city as a whole, although it has an amazing medical center and is a sort of global hub, just doesn't seem to have all that much going on outside of their major medical research (which is awesome! Just not the only thing I want to look at). I'm hoping I'm wrong and I'm just not looking in the right places. Their in-state tuition is just awesome, though. Also, it's my hometown and where my family is, so there's that battle between the convenience of being in a familiar city I love and venturing out to someplace new and (probably) better for what I'm interested in.

Does anyone know when we are supposed to find out about merit scholarships? I saw with several schools (specifically Boston) people posted that they received offers in their official letter in the mail. Is that the same for schools like Michigan or Tulane? I'm really curious how others are financing grad school in general.

SOPHAS didn't reject my application, but I have been running into some trouble with the schools I've applied to. I received emails from 2 schools (so far) telling me that my application was incomplete because I was missing a WES eval. I just emailed them back and told them my situation and they took care of it, but it's still a little unnerving.

Hey! I added my study abroad institution on SOPHAS as well, but at the same time I emailed each of the schools I applied to asking if I needed a WES evaluation for that transcript (the titles and grades were not listed on my home transcript, just the total credits from the study abroad institution). Most said it was not required, but they needed a copy of the study abroad transcript sent to them, so I had my study abroad school send a copy of the study abroad transcript to each of the schools I applied to. Luckily, I haven't run into any problems yet! 🙂

Hello everyone, congratulation on all your acceptance!
As a foreign student, I have several questions:
1. I'm not familiar with merit scholarships. Do you know when will the decisions for merit scholarships be available? (Around March or early April?)
2. I'm already a hepatologist and my aim for MPH program is to study biostatistics. I can already use SPSS and SAS to perform basic analysis for demographics, cohorts, and survival. I want to know how to handle large database, and perform survival analysis. Which program will you guys recommend?
 
Question about cost:

So far I've been accepted to Emory and U Michigan for MPH programs. Throughout undergrad I have gotten pretty much the maximum financial aid (state AND federal). I've never attended a school out of the state of my residence, nor have i attended a private school. Emory is both private & out of state but from what I'm seeing on their website it looks like graduate students pay the same regardless of where theyre from? And u of M seems to have very expensive out of state. From someone who knows very little about this, Im not sure what to think. Does anyone have any idea if one school may cost significantly more than the other for someone in my financial situation?

Also, less important question: Is U of M's MPH program actually much more difficult to be accepted into than Emory?
 
For those of you trying to decide which school to go to - how do I even start!? I'm mostly between UMich and Emory right now, and also considering GWU and BU. I'm making a spreadsheet with all kinds of info to compare the programs. I'm really leaning towards UMich though - extensive opportunities for research and fieldwork, as well as brand new facilities and a great college town vibe. Has anybody visited UMich or talked to faculty there? I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts!

When did you apply to Davis, the priority deadline or the general deadline? My application was just confirmed last week so I don't expect to hear anything for awhile.
 
I also have Michigan as my top choice, I'm planning on going to admitted student day on March 11th and just submitted my Fafsa. Really hoping that its affordable for me OOC. Don't mind on taking on some debt but don't want to pay full price.

For me, ideal location is much more important than financial aid even though I've been working full-time while in school to basically pay for it as I go. I live just a few hours south of Atlanta, GA, and personally I am not a fan of that whole state. There's nothing there except for cotton fields and a couple pretty college campuses. If that isn't something you are taking into account while making a decision about which school to attend, I would wait until you've received a finalized financial aid package/offer from each school. Make sure to call each and ensure that you are maximizing the potential financial aid that may be given to you. THEN compare finances and choose a school.
 
I applied last minute. In fact, the whole decision was sort of last minute. I'm not going to lie... I feel really nervous. Reading your responses amongst yourselves have helped to cool the nerves.

Completely agree. I don't think that this is the place for parents. I know that you want to be involved, but if she is mature enough to handle graduate school, then she should be handling the admissions process as well. Not trying to be mean, just realistic.
 
Today marks 8 weeks since I applied to GW... Idk I called and Im still in review. I did apply to Physical Activity and no one has applied to that on this forum but should I just give up hope haha
 
I just got into Tufts MPH program!!! I was randomly checking my online application portals just now (like I have obsessively-compulsively been doing for the past several weeks lol) and the acceptance letter was right there! I hadn't received an email yet or anything. I'm assuming because it's only 9 am on Monday but I definitely didn't expect a decision so fast. YAY I'm so happy! It's my first acceptance! Someone wants me!! lol 😀

I've already checked Wolverine Access three times this morning so I get it!
