I think the answer depends on what you want to do and focus on. I don't know much about MPA programs but I know it is rather a very broad degree. My friend is doing MPA but he is focused on education/nonprofit management, whereas another friend of mine is doing MPA focusing on economics.

Ahh, so this one seems fairly general. I guess that there won't be much room to specialize, given that it's a dual programme.
 
@WorkandPork you're the only one I saw that applied to Northwestern. Can you tell me when you applied/verified/and heard back from them? I'm pretty anxious waiting for the decision.

yes of course! i applied around 12/15 i think, and my application was under review on 12/19 and i was admitted on 1/3 and was given a scholarship a couple weeks after that!
 
Any maternal and child health people here who are considering UIC? I'm very drawn to the school's Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health and how much it has to offer in this specialized field of study. I spoke with Cindy San Miguel, the assistant director of the MCH department, by phone this morning and asked her about a million questions, so free to reach out if you want any insight I may have gained about the program!

Oh wow! That's a pretty fast turnabout! I submitted on the 1/5 and verified on 1/13 so hopefully I'll start hearing from them soon. Was there any interview involved>

My phone vibrates and it's a promo email from Victoria's Secret -___- BTW just asking since you're applying to Colorado - are you applying to their Judith Albino scholarship?

I totally want to email as well, but I feel like I've already emailed multiple times so I should sit back and wait.

Also, for those of you (I think there were at least a couple) who applied for USF's dual Epi and Global Communicable Diseases, how long did it take to find out? And did you find out by email or on the portal first?

I've been accepted to the dual program. I got accepted by the global communicable disease department, and then I recieved another e-mail that I had been accepted by Epi department. I got the GCD email on 12/11 and the epi/full decision email for dual program on Jan 10th.

Also, nothing ever changed in that portal they sent me....

I was going to sit back and wait but I ended up emailing the admissions office just now... 😵 In the "application complete" email it did say do not hesitate to contact them if we require assistance. It's been like over seven weeks for me. From previous threads it seems like Emory's communication is not the best.

I did the same! Hopefully they get back to us soon with a decision. I am getting a little anxious waiting.

I think I might do the same thing if the wait time gets to 7 weeks or more. I've been counting the days and weeks since I received the application complete email. lol This is my 5th week in waiting and I'm getting more anxious and nervous as the weeks go by!

I don't think so. To be honest, I overlooked the email because I thought it was an admission decision email and I got nervous. lol The deadline is fast approaching and I don't want to rush through it. Are you?

Yeah, it says preference is given to students from Indian tribes but doesn't hurt to try! I'll take any money I can get, I'll need it if I'm moving there. I heard from someone that Colorado doesn't give out a lot of money so I'm trying to apply to everything I qualify for. To be honest I never thought about Colorado SPH until my mentor (a postdoc in epi at UW) recommended the school, and my boyfriend got a medical school interview at UC Denver couple weeks back so now it's one of my top choices. It's also cheaper than a lot of east coast schools :greedy:

Y'all should definitely apply for the Albino scholarship no matter who you are. I frankly do not bring a lot of diversity and was still awarded the scholarship last year. It was the only financial support CSPH gave me. Happy to chat more about it in PM.
 
In at UWash - COPHP program! Waiting for Columbia and UC Berkeley - anxiety is killing me.
 
Anyone else apply to Oregon State or University of Arizona? If so has anyone heard anything back yet?

I don't know whether that makes me more relieved or more anxious. I've heard back from almost all of my other schools but Emory is my first choice.

I applied to Oregon and haven't heard anything. I was invited to apply to some fellowships, but I don't know if that means anything. On their website it says we should hear by mid february
 
I've been lurking here for awhile but the talk about Emory finally made me make an account and post something. So I might as well say where I've applied and been accepted.

Undergrad School: Indiana University
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.9
Major/Minor: Anthropology major with minors in public health and Spanish
GRE: 169V, 159Q, 4W
Experience/Research:
  • student volunteer in an archaeology lab - 1 semester
  • teaching assistant for Intro to Bioanthropology - 1 semester
  • internship with a campus public health initiative - 1 semester
  • spent three weeks at an anthropology field school in Italy
I've applied to Emory, Columbia, University of Michigan, Vanderbilt, George Washington, and Pitt. I've been accepted to Columbia (on Monday like all those other people who posted), Michigan (last week), GW (also last week), and Pitt (about ten days ago). I'm still waiting to hear from Emory and Vandy.

Edit: I forgot to say that I applied to the epidemiology programs for all of these.
 
I applied to schools between 12/1 and 1/15 and haven't heard back from anyone yet...do you think this is a bad sign?

Does somebody know anything about the quality of the Vanderbilt MPH program (beyond whats on the website)? How well is the program structured, research specialties, etc. ?
 
Hello all,

I had a question that I wanted to pose to the group. I was accepted to Drexel this weekend and to LSUHSC today. I'm still awaiting 4 decisions and, in the meantime, grappling with the decision of where to go. I'm wondering what people think about going to the place with the cheapest degree (including any aid and scholarships) vs. going to the place with prestige in the field. It's hard for me to decide whether I should take $40,000 in loans to go to a better school or go somewhere like LSU and take no loans... Thoughts?

I applied to Vanderbilt and my understanding was that they are not the tip-top, but they are still a good, solid program. To be honest, I partly applied to them because I like the weather down there.

I emailed Annie Smart (she's in charge of admissions) and she set me up to talk with a MPH student in my desired track who is very similar to me (literally we did the same undergrad research program in the same year). I was able to email the student and even meet her in person while she was home for Thanksgiving break (her hometown is where I currently work). She absolutely loves the small cohort and the individualization she's received. She also said each student got their desired internship and that everyone she knows loves the program.

That made it one of my top choices. I can't wait to hear back!

Hey, I'm in a very similar situation, but I think it's probably because I've been submitting very close to the deadline in most cases. The wait is beginning to get to me now though. Hope we get some good news soon!

EDIT: Just got an email for an interview with Michigan (Health Policy and Management)! This is my first interview. Can someone tell me how theirs went? Do you think I'd need to prep for it?

I highly recommend waiting to hear back from all programs before stressing too much. After receiving scholarships and all around financial packages, my top choice "prestigious" school was actually my least expensive option. I will say that I did not apply to any schools in which I would have been granted in-state tuition so this may not be directly comparable, but you may end up having the cost of various schools be closer than you think.

I also think you need to look at the programs overall beyond price and prestige alone. If the school that would be more affordable matches your educational, research, and career interests, then, in my opinion, I think it would be a good option. However, if saving money means compromising on what you want to do in public health, then you should consider other schools. I believe that money is a very important factor and that a name for a dramatically different price tag is typically not worth it as long as the less expensive program provides the education you need to gain skills in your field.

I submitted my application to Michigan on 12/14 (a day before the priority deadline) but it was not deemed complete by them until 1/12 because of some issues with SOPHAS. Can I ask when you submitted yours? I also applied for HPM!
