I was recently accepted to the MPH program for Communications and Marketing at GWU. I was initially thrilled because it's such a great school (and my dad is on the faculty, so it isn't quite as pricy for me.) Since then, I got a little disenchanted after seeing some discrepancy in opinions about the program.

I'm still waiting to hear back from UMD, BU, Pittsburgh, and a biopsych MA at George Mason. Does anyone have any insight about where these programs stand in comparison to one another? I really want to make a smart decision about the school I attend, even though I don't think the MPH will be the end of my education (I've been wanting to get my PhD for a while, but I want to amp up my competitiveness beforehand.)

Thanks in advance!! Your answers would mean a great deal.

Don't know much about the other programs you listed, but everyone I know who graduated from the communications department at GW had a really positive experience. Jerry Franz is the bomb.com, and his class was one of my favorites! I would keep in mind that people's experiences in the MPH program at GW vary greatly depending on the department/track...some departments definitely had more positive feedback from students than others so it's hard to really assess the entire MPH program as a whole.

I also got into their Health Communication and Marketing track! I'm trying to work out a trip east to really see the school (I'm from California). What discrepancies have you heard about the program?

Has anyone heard any reviews of their MPH program in Health Promotion?

I've heard a lot of different opinions about the program, and I feel as though it's hard to get one that is unbiased. A coworker of mine is attending part-time, and she loves it. The faculty are well connected with all the public health organizations in the area, the classes are challenging, and there are a lot of career opportunities after graduation. But another coworker got her MPH from Columbia and took one Communications course thought that the class was "fluff" ...

All in all, I'm starting to lean toward GW, and a major reason is the location. I think that really makes the program have an advantage over others, because you have a lot of opportunities to actually be involved with clients and have a more hands on experience. That could be true for BU though, since it's also a major city....

I interned at HHS, and one of my coworkers finished the Health Promotion program in a year...I think she had a pretty positive experience. She worked for a couple years afterwards and then got her PhD from another institution. I'm actually thinking about going for the Health Promotion concentration as opposed to Comm & Marketing...

Are you going to the Preview Day?

IF you're on the fence about GW I would definitely recommend going to the preview day...it's super helpful and you have plenty of opportunities to talk to professors, current students, and other accepted students.
