To the wonderful gentleman or lady from the admissions committee who have posted on this website?

I have a question sir or madam. I have a friend who is bragging to me that he got into a top UC, and that he has deferred from this school, and he also CLAIMS that he got permission from the school to apply again to other schools this year, so he can aim for a better school?!

I told him if he does that, it is wrong, and the schools will rescind their acceptances...he was like, no if u notify the school, and then reapply, as long as they know then this is no big deal.....

Is this completely false and a case of premeds bragging about acceptances? 😡

It really angers me that people stoop to such levesls to brag and tell stories....I MEAN DUDE...if u didn't get accepted last year....be a man and say that you weren't accepted!!! What is all this story, about deferring and reapplying? it annoys me dearly....

so is there any truth to this. mr. adcom member?

Thank you...

my gosh...some people are in such denial mode....sigh 🙄

at the schools i've been to if you defer, you are supposed to reapply the following year as a early decision (i assume with a guarantee acceptance) applictant. since we all know early decision applicants may only apply to one school, i really doubt you could apply to another school
(i'm not an adcom person)

Is that ethical to defer an acceptance from a school just so you can apply to better schools the next year? What school would allow you to do that if you told them what your true reasons for deferring were?

Here's how it works.
If you are accepted and defer you have still been accepted to that school. You form a binding contract with that school that you will attend the following year. You are NOT allowed to reapply.

Not only are you not allowed to reapply, but other schools won't accept your application. AMCAS notifies the institutions involved. To the OP, the guy lied.

Just to be contrary: I was talking on friday with Beth Bailey, admissions dean at UVA. I didn't get into UVA, but I have received a deferral at UNC. When asking me about my deferral, she asked if UNC was making me "lock in" or if I could apply to other schools. I told her that UNC was making me lock in through early decision--and then she told me that there WERE some schools that did NOT make you lock in to their school if you deferred there.

So Dr. Bailey would say that it is a possibility that someone got a nonbinding deferral.

Just telling y'all what she said. Me personally, I haven't come across any school that would let me defer but also apply to other schools. But Dr. Bailey said (for what it is worth) that such schools are out there...
