Hey guys, i'm trying to set up my MS3 clerkship schedule, and i'm kinda interested/intrigued by ophthalmology. There is an option to do a 4 week selective in ophthalmology, and I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of procedures i'll be able to do, or what kind of interesting cases I'll be seeing as an MS3 doing a selective. I'm kinda tempted to use the selective on ER, since most people have told me it's one of the more interesting/fun options. Let me know if you think doing a selective in opthalmology would be worth my while...I guess I can always do one in MS4 if all else fails.

Welcome to the forum!

Buck,

Your experience will highly depend on your level knowledge and comfort, and will vary from program to program. The elective is usually designed to give you a one month broad exposure to ophthalmology.

During a one month elective, expect to learn how to do the ophthalmological examination, take a history, and form a differential. You may get to go to the OR and watch. Some programs may allow you to scrub in, but don't expect to do much as a medical student.

While at Hopkins, I was allowed to help on one strabismus case and one ptosis surgery. During the plastics case, the attending pimped me left and right, and I didn't know the answers. She ask me to describe the anatomical layers of the lid and orbit. Needless to say, I read up when I got home, but during the case, my hands were so shakey that she keep telling me to rest my hand on 'something' while retracting the skin. Learn from this! If you're going to the OR, read up!!! You'll get pimped, and you don't want to be caught not knowing your anatomy. 🙂

Good luck!

dont expect to do many procedures, i have taught a few med students how to do a tarsorhaphy, insert punctal plugs, remove foreign bodies.
