I feel like I'm missing something glaringly obvious (and someone is welcome to smack me if I am), but I'm rather confused by the optional and required research thesis schools listed on MSAR. I've looked into several schools listed as requiring a research thesis and didn't see a word on their sites about a research thesis being required. Is the required research thesis for MD/PhD programs? Does MSAR just base "required" on the percent of students accepted with research experience? Or am I missing something painfully obvious?

The only mention of a thesis that I recall seeing on MSAR was with respect to whether or not students are required to complete a research/scholarly project as part of the medical school curriculum, not as an admissions requirement. If that's what you're referring to, it has nothing to do with the percentage of students who did research prior to acceptance, it's about what you'll be required to do at that school in order to earn your MD.

It's an option that you can check when searching through schools on the MSAR (left side of the page with all of the other fancy selection factors). It just says "Research Thesis" and the two options are "Required" and "Optional".

Yeah, that's referring to research as part of the med school curriculum. If you look at the individual school's profile, it's under the 'Education' tab. Some people really don't want to do research in med school, and so would search for those schools that won't require a research project to be completed.

The community service search option right under the research is referring to the same thing - whether or not community service is required during medical school.

Ah, thank you for clarifying, it's very much appreciated! I feel rather silly for misunderstanding that!
