how lienient are the schools as to where you do your rotations? I'm a MSI at LECOM and I would love to come back to Oregon to do my rotations. How possible is this?

I don't know how things work with osteopathic schools, but my understanding is that most schools require you to do your core clerkships (Psychiatry, Surgery, Medicine, Peds, Ob/Gyn) at a site affiliated with the medical school. However, it may be possible to do your family medicine rotation and other electives back in Oregon if you wish. I know that my school (Tufts) allows students to do 2 or 3 "away" rotations (1 month each) during 4th year. I also have a friend who graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School who did part of a required rural medicine rotation in Florida. I would check your school's policies or ask the Dean of Students; they should be able to tell you more info.🙂

At LECOM you have to pick a certain area to do your core rotations in (I believe these are Pittsburgh, Ohio/Michigan, Central PA, NY, Florida, and Erie - I may be forgetting a couple areas). You could go to Oregon to do your electives but for the core rotations you will have to pick one of those areas. We have one elective in our third year and something like 4 in our fourth year. You can also do your family practice rotation in Oregon as long as the doctor you are with is a board-certified family practice doc who is a DO.

DOtobe,

I'll be at LECOM in the fall. Do you have full control over what area you pick or is it dictated by say grades, administration or what? I'm hoping to travel around as little as possible.

are all the sites in the various cities affiliates of LECOM? this would make sense to me b/c it would seem grossly unfair to grade someone from LECOM who did rotations at U Pitt against someone who did their rotations at an LECOM affiliate in Erie. just curious, every school is different..

Sorry it took me a couple days to reply...

Dr Sax - you can pick whatever area you want to be in for your rotations. It doesn't have anything to do with grades or anything. I think everyone in my class was able to be in the area they wanted. Some people (especially the Erie area people) had to do a rotation or two outside of their area because there weren't enough in Erie, but for the most part everyone ends up doing their rotations in their own area.

Irlandesa - yes, all of the hospitals in those areas are affiliates of LECOM.

Thanks DOtobe. My wife doesn't want to travel much which is why I ask. We want to maybe stay around Erie but if I have to move anyway, maybe I should consider Pitt or another area.

Thanks again,
