I haven't found very many threads discussing this substantially, and I am interested in knowing what others think since these are my two Manhattan options. They seem virtually identical in overall ranking, overall match list, etc. I would personally put MSSM slightly above NYU in terms of location because it is in a more interesting and diverse part of the city. However, NYU probably has a leg up with their hospital. Research opportunities seem similar in both cases. Anyone have anything to contribute? Thanks in advance!

I think MSSM has the location (as you said) but if you're interested in international opportunities (a project abroad during the summer and international rotations) NYU definitely has a leg up. According to a friend that goes there, MSSM seems like they make it pretty difficult to go abroad and they don't provide funding. NYU helps out a lot in getting people around the world.

Well, I never even got to see NYU, but I thought MSSM was pretty sweet. You have to figure in your sense of the student body. MSSM students seemed pretty chill and relaxed. Was that the case at NYU? Forget the curriculum and research for a second. Where do you think you'd be happier?

When you say NYU's hospital "has a leg up" on MSSM, are you referring to the complexity of cases? This might be true because New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering are less than 2 miles away. However, one of my interviewers at another school was telling me not to think about the hospital or the diversity of cases (even though this hospital was massive and saw EVERYTHING - one of the tour guides used this as a selling point). He said, "medical school is for learning the horses, wait 'til internship and residency to learn the zebras. You gotta learn the basics before you learn the weird ones." This coming from the maxim: "when you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras."

By the way... the same interviewer told me, "wherever you go, you'll learn the same science. ******** doesn't have a secret cure for cancer."

By the way, congrats on your acceptances! That's a sweet (albeit tough) choice to have!

I should also mention that I considered overall feel and student body based on my interview day and they seemed rather similar in that respect also. MSSM students seemed cool overall but my tour guides were acting like children. Also the students there said things like " I know kids that are in my class who opted for MSSM over NYU and even Cornell" which makes me wonder if there is an inferiority complex issue there. NYU, the student body seemed great but it also felt that everyone just liked to go to the bars often when not studying, and had no other interests. Again, I know this is far from true, but this is just the feeling I got from interview day.

i should also note that MSSM housing is much better than NYU's at least for 1st years. i think both have apartment style living for MS2-4 years

hmm, that's what I'm curious about. I know NYU's first year housing is terrible, but what about years 2-4??? I was under the impression that all four years are dorms (the same dorms, that is)? Is this true? Anyone know anything more about NYU's housing???
