I am waiting to hear back from Wayne State, but should i get in I have a bit of a dilemma. I believe, based on the interview day, that I liked MSU's program more. However, I am aware that Wayne has the better reputation and would be closer for me. I would be looking at a 15 drive to Wayne vs a 40 min drive to MSU. Would you go to the school you preferred if it meant a shorter commute?

Assuming you choose MSU, would you not live closer? 40 minute commute is pretty lengthy especially back and forth.

I wish that could be the case. My girlfriend will be working near Detroit. So if i chose MSU we agreed to split the difference and live about halfway

How can you be 15 mins from Wayne and yet 40 mins from MSU? If you live near Detroit, your looking at least and hour to Lansing... but to give my opinion, what about the financial aspect, did you get any aid from either school. I think wayne tends to be on the cheaper side. Also wayne does have a good rep, plus you'd be close to your girlfriend which is great.

What did you like better about MSU vs Wayne?

I am in the opposite position as you: I was accepted by Wayne but put on waitlist for MSU CHM. Honestly, MSU CHM was pretty high up there for me because I loved the feel of the school when I interviewed (and it's also my alma mater). Thing is though, if you do get into MSU CHM, you may end up being farther than 40 mins? Because if I recall correctly, students may give preference for location but it's not guaranteed that you will be placed in the campus of your choosing (Grand Rapids vs EL).

I've actually decided to just stick with Wayne because I also live relatively close to Detroit and it's the cheaper option overall. And as you already stated, Wayne has a good reputation. I have also been fortunate enough to have had a few upperclassmen reach out to me outside of SDN to answer questions about their new curriculum and even other things such as their preferred study methods.

EDIT: My S/O also lives and works in Detroit and to be honest, it does put me more at ease that I will be closer

You may not Get the lansing campus for MSUCHM , you also may end up having to move for clinical rotations. I would keep that in mind as well .

From what I understand it's the GR campus that is the more popular option, so if OP requests the east lansing campus they should get it.
Your clinical lplacement determines where you’ll end up during third and fourth year. No guarantee you’ll be in East Lansing, could end up in Southfield, Flint, etc...

that is true , but who knows if there are a bunch of people wanting to stay in the basement in lansing this class.

4 of my friends in MSU CHM requested to stay in EL since they all lived in a house together there for undergrad. Only two of them had their preferences honored and the other two were sent to the GR campus. So there are definitely people out there who don't get their preferences honored despite there being the idea that the EL campus is the less popular one.

How the 3/4 year placement works is that locations with more people selecting them w/ not enough spots available turn into a lottery. People who don't get picked then get sent to places that need people ie the less desirable places of Midland, Traverse City, etc. I think it's usually a few people from each popular location get unlucky and get sent to the boonies.

MSU for sure. If you want Lansing, you will get Lansing.

Are you a student there/can say that for certain? Not to hijack OP's thread, but my SO greatly wants the EL campus and is worried she won't get it.

With regards to MSU CHM, my understanding from the interview and a current student there is that there are more spots in the EL campus and GR tends to be more in demand, therefore people that prefer the EL campus tend to get that preference.

It comes down to the class it seems and which campus is more in demand. I was informed that when making a decision, you could appeal with admissions especially if you have a significant reason such as family/support system etc. that was more accessible at a specific campus.

What were your pros and cons for Wayne? It seems like you liked MSU more than Wayne, but as other people have stated, you may have to move around for years 3/4. If you're interested in a bit more stabilty and convenience, on top of the better reputation (I haven't been following the whole issue between Wayne and DMC, not sure how that might affect this decision) I would pick Wayne.

I loved MSU CHM's program as well though and felt very good about the interview day so I can see why this is a tough decision!
