Hi guys,

I'm very grateful to be able to choose between two schools that I really like.

UVM Larner -

Good match list. I like the curriculum. Lots of research opportunities. P/F.

Expensive tuition, expensive living in Burlington.

Michigan State -

Seems super supportive and friendly - good vibes all around. Research and community health focus, both of which I value. P/F I think? Cheap cost of living.

Curriculum is a bit strange (chief complaint system instead of organ blocks) - some people seem to love it, some hate it. Not as strong of a match list as UVM.

Do any current students or anyone planning to attend either of these schools have additional factors I should consider or personal experiences with the schools to share?

Thanks!

Def find out if Michigan is PF. How much less would Michigan state be?

I confirmed that Michigan is P/F. The curriculum seems relatively low-stress for med school since they use NBME "formative" exams, where you need to score 20% in the first semester, 30% in the second semester, etc. They view it as a cumulative process to learning all of the material for Step 1, which sounds amazing.

Tuition-wise, there's not an insurmountable difference between the schools, but Vermont's cost of living and childcare are much higher, meaning I'd also need to take out living loans. In Michigan, my spouse's salary would be able to cover everything except tuition.

I think I'm leaning toward MSU...

Yea that all sounds good. I think MSU would be the best fit for you.

As a Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSU CHM) student with access to the 2025 MSU CHM match data, I reviewed and compared our match results with those of the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine (UVM) Class of 2025, I can assure to you that MSU CHM had a stronger match than UVM. I am curious to see what data you are using to draw your conclusion.

For example, in 2025, even after adjusting for class sizes, we had higher percentages for general surgery, similar rates for urology and dermatology, and higher match rates for plastic surgery, neurosurgery, and orthopedics. So, if anything, CHM likely has a stronger match list. Although our match list is not public, this is just a snapshot of the differences. It's likely a no-brainer, especially considering the school is also more affordable. There's also a strong emphasis on research, and students have no trouble finding mentorship in that area. Let me know if you have any other questions.

This is all really helpful to hear, thank you!

I’m interested in academic IM and then sub specializing (although I know many people change their minds during medical school), so I was looking more so at the number of highly ranked programs that students match into.
I’m interested in seeing the 2025 data - do you know when this will be publicly available?

Here is my quick analysis from looking over both match lists. Unfortunately you cannot see the match list for msu publicly but next year all schools will publicly post their match lists. : In a comparison of MSU College of Human Medicine (CHM) and UVM Larner College of Medicine's 2025 match results, both schools placed students into premier academic medical centers, although trends reflect regional impacts. UVM Larner in the Northeast matched a number of students into top East Coast elite locations such as Massachusetts General Hospital, Yale, Brown, Mount Sinai, and Brigham & Women's programs with traditional ties to schools from that region. But MSU CHM also matched students into several elite academic centers around the country, including Johns Hopkins, UCLA, Mayo Clinic, Stanford, and Duke. In addition, MSU CHM matched well into nationally recognized Midwest centers like the University of Michigan, Cleveland Clinic, and Northwestern. This indicates that CHM students are competitive for elite academic programs, and their matches more likely have regional ties to elite hospitals in the Midwest, much like UVM's with the big East Coast centers. So what I saw made perfect sense. Both schools are perfectly situated to get you where you need to be. Go with the cheaper option. There is a lot of uncertainty with student loans now with the current administration I would be as debt averse as possible. But I am a random person on the internet do not take my advice as gold.
