That's not true at all...I was complete mid-august..I was accepted the first week of October. Keep your head up!

Just wanted to say congrats to those that have been accepted and good luck to those still waiting to hear back.
I heard back yesterday!! I'm in!!

Class start at the end of June. I think something like June 24 this year. I am not sure of the exact date. I dont think they are sure of the exact date either. Orientation will be before that I suppose. Congratss
 
Hey guys. I visited the East Lansing campus 2 weeks ago. Here's a bunch of info that I wrote down or received in my info packet.

Classes start June 22. There is a summer semester in which students only take anatomy. 2 hours of lecture in the morning and 2 hours of lab every afternoon. Students told me that the light initial course load helps the DO students really get a chance to bond and get to know each other. They also said it was good to get anatomy done early because there is so much to know.

Grades are Pass/Fail which is either 70% or 75% depending on the course.

I was advised to take Histology ahead of time if possible because it's a difficult first-time course. The second year is mostly systems-based.

First time COMLEX pass-rate is about 90%. There is no formal board prep. About 15% of students take the USMLE.

In-state tuition: $32,193
OOS tuition: $69,660
(These are 09-10 numbers)

Clerkship Years:
25 Base Hospitals in Michigan
14 weeks of selectives, 20 weeks of electives
Above 90% of students get their first choice residency (wow!)

They just announced that a new building in EL will be built in the next 4 years, but that doesn't effect us.

Lots of graduates go into primary care. 70% of graduates stay in Michigan.
 
Thanks for the updates and advice! One thing, I'm not sure if the June 22 date you wrote down is for incoming freshmen or not. Traditionally they have started Gross Anatomy during the last week of June, with Orientation preceding it by a few days. I suppose they could have moved it up a week, it's not posted online so who knows. Does anybody else have any insight on this? I know some students might be conflicted with this earlier start date if they have some classes from another school to finish before beginning at MSUCOM.

Just an FYI, I wouldn't say that the summer anatomy course is "light" in absolute terms but relative to future course loads.

It probably depends how long it takes you to memorize body structures in cadavers. Most people attended the lab open hours to practice; it takes more time than you would think because the anatomy lab can be crowded and it takes longer than expected to see good examples of structure X, Y, and Z.

Also, I haven't seen the statistics, but it seems that the majority (or perhaps good minority) of out of state students receive a tuition waiver that covers the difference in tuition between out of state and in state students. If I'm wrong, I'm glad to be corrected.

Do you know what the student to cadaver ratio is?
 
Anyone know around what time he acceptance emails are sent out?
 
Its a prosection anatomy course so you don't have to dissect yourself. That saves time. However, it might add time because you have to go from body to body, searching for good examples.

The ratio might be around 2 to 1 or so? Trust me, it gets pretty busy and hectic and hard to see with so many people notwithstanding the ratio. The ratio really is more pertinent in dissection labs.

It's pretty weird that no one posted acceptances today. Does anyone know if the adcom even met today?
 
Didn't someone here previously post they received their email on Thursday morning? Check your emails tomorrow morning boys and girls!

That's what it sounded like when I went for my visitation. All the students I spoke with said their OOS friends all had waivers. However, when I talked to admissions, they indicated that there were only 8 OOS waiver scholarships available for next year's incoming class. So, maybe there are other waivers out there? I dunno... I hope so...

And in case anyone is curious, the OOS scholarship committee is deciding who get those 8 scholarships MONDAY! :scared: *Bites nails* Good luck all you fellow OOSers! If anyone gets that special email, post please.
 
The "big" OOS scholarship is competitive. I would say roughly 1/3 of our OOS students recieved it.

Summer anatomy is not "light" if you want to do well in the class. However, it makes Fall semester A LOT easier. I would say you'll spend 50-60 hours a week on it.... Faculty will tell you to spend 85+ hours a week (includes class) to do well, which is actually good advice for at least the first test. The COM anatomy class average was in the mid 80s and about 20% of the class finished with 90%+.

I got 2 questions for you:

How long after you submit your deposit and paperwork do you get confirmed for your site?

Also, on the MSU Graduate Application (Item #15) where you list all activities that you have done since high school...Did you list everything that is on your AACOMAS and Nonacademic sheet??

Is this something you would have applied for, are you "invited" to it (I know a lot of schools just decide whether or not you're allowed to even APPLY for merit kinda stuff)
 
Are people actually getting rejected from this school? Or do they just keep moving you down the pile?

Kinda both. From what I heard there has been more of a waitlist movement, but yes people are still getting rejected. But there's also people who haven't heard back in a few months. There's not much one can do but be patient.

@Med, there is no interviews at MSUCOM. Give and take maybe a few individuals who will be asked for one to answer a few questions, but that number I believe is quite low.

I'll be at the campus tour as well on the 12th. Anyone know what the dress code is? I have a meeting with the DO/PhD program director so I would think I should wear a suit, but I don't want to be the only idiot there all dressed up, since it's not really an interview.

I have a meeting with the same guy! What time is yours??

I'm not sure really what to wear either. I was thinking business casual, like I'm a girl so I guess I was thinking nice shoes/slacks/nice blouse, etc. They don't really say though

I was going to do the same, I don't want to make a bad impression and wear jeans when they first meet me.

With this scholarship, they are just selecting out of the OOS applicants already offered admission.

Hey that's awesome - my meeting is actually at 11 AM. Maybe we can chat about the program if you get a chance - I've been struggling to find three brand new recommendations that I did not use for my med school apps.

I'm a guy, so I was thinking about just wearing a blazer and slacks without a tie...so I guess we're on the same page! I guess I'll see you and Green Machine on Fri.

Yeah, the rec letter thing was annoying. Honestly, two of mine had already written letters for the DO program--but they were the two professors that I had done the most research with. I just asked them if they could rewrite my letter for a graduate school (which I'm sure they were so excited about...).

Feel free to message me or something, I'm really nervous about talking to Dr. McCormick (even though I guess it's not really an interview..but still) so I'd like to get myself in the mindset
