MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Still nothing today?

My app was submitted on Aug 30th and I still haven't heard anything. I have a 3.5 cgpa and a 3.4 sgpa with a 27Q MCAT and two years of research plus a year of working in a pulmonology department.

I'm starting to get really nervous, this is definitely my first choice for school.

yea I have a 3.2 Sgpa and a 30Q MCAT and havent heard either! was complete september 20th

well, I submitted my secondary oct 29th after I was granted an extension. 26M, 3.7cpga, 3.4sgpa.

Woooooowhoooooo!

First acceptance!

For anyone else who has been accepted, do we have to put the deposit down before we find out which campus we are assigned to? I really want the East Lansing campus.

Thx and good luck to everyone else! Hang in there.

Np, although I submitted my secondary in early September, my advisor didn't send his evaluation form until mid October. So I received the complete email from MSUCOM on 11/26.
Sorry I meant 10/26!

So you heard back today?

Yep got the email this morning!

Congrats!

Well at least we know they met today then. The wait continues...

I was accepted today!

I'm in-state, 28 MCAT, 3.7 sGPA. Secondary was complete in July.

For everyone thats been accepted...Congrats!!

I got 2 questions for you:

How long after you submit your deposit and paperwork do you get confirmed for your site?

Also, on the MSU Graduate Application (Item #15) where you list all activities that you have done since high school...Did you list everything that is on your AACOMAS and Nonacademic sheet??

Thanks

Hey Baz,
I heard within like 5 days of sending my stuff in the mail.
Yeah, I still listed everything on the AACOMAS and nonacademic sheet, just copied and pasted. I figure I don't want to leave anything off just in case you know?

Hey everyone who is admitted with the class of 2015 come join the facebook page:http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=103891869673493

we can start networking and talking about stuff like roommates, apartments, FAFSA and which sites we will be at.

To everyone else still waiting, there is still lots of time and plenty of available spots! Best of luck!

finally got my secondary last night and already mailed it out this morning, dropped of my LOR forms and they should mail them out monday (hopefully).... how long does it take for them to " receive" it all and start to review it? I know they make a decision within two weeks if they are really interested in you, right? Cant wait to hear from them, and maybe get accepted!! :xf:

For everyone else who has been accepted, when do we have to submit our deposit by? I haven't received my package yet and would like to know when I need the $$$ by. Also, how much is the deposit?

Thx! 🙂

Deposit is $1,050.00, it accounts for a bunch of different stuff that they will explain in your packet.

I believe the due date for the materials is dependent upon when you were accepted, since my due date is approaching and there are still several open spots in the class.

Either way, if you've been accepted and are just waiting on your snail-mail materials, you are fine. Congrats and you should join the facebook page!

Good luck everyone else!

Thx for the info! I was just accepted Wednesday, so no snail mail package yet. Do you happen to know what my chances are of getting an East Lansing spot? I don't know Michigan AT ALL, but I have lots of friends who are state graduates and they told me how great EL is so I definitely want in there! 😀

Also, anyone have a link to MSUCOM most recent match list?

I went to MSU in East Lansing for my undergraduate degree, then continued on to other universities for post-bac and graduate studies. Looking back, I really enjoyed E.L. at the time, but I'm not sure it would be the best environment for me - I think I'd be lured back to my old favorite bars and routines.

Plus I now live about 20 minutes away from the Macomb campus - so that kind of makes it an easy decision!

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I visited MSUCOM EL campus this past Friday, November 12th. I'm from San Diego and was really apprehensive to even check out this school because I've heard a lot of negatives about the weather in MI; however, after visiting, I've withdrawn all my other applications at other universities! MSU is an absolutely amazing campus and the program is definitely well established and affords a lot of opportunities to its students. It's 100% what I'm looking for in a medical school! So, if anyone else out there is worried about Michigan because they are from OOS, don't worry! I went from dreading it to not being able to wait for June 22nd, 2011 (when orientation begins). Good luck everyone!

Glad you chose MSU. But if your coming from San Diego, your going to be VERY surprised when Winter hits LOL. The weather was great last week. MSU is an amazing school and my number 1 choice, but whatever rumors you heard about MI weather, they are probably true haha.

How do you think about the 70 grands of OOS tuition fee? I am also from southern CA and debating between MSU and AZCOM. Weather and tuition are the most negative things of MSU compared to AZCOM.

lol - not that you should choose schools based on weather but if you really hate Winter, you might want to avoid the Midwest entirely.

When looking at cost of attendance MSUCOM versus AZCOM, you're going to end up in more debt at AZCOM (80k CoA) than at MSU (70k CoA). Particularly with AZCOM's tuition increases.

Also the entire cost of attendance for an OOS at MSUCOM without scholarships is ~70k, tuition and fees is ~50k. Be sure to compare cost of attendance instead of tuition costs to really get a true picture of how much debt you will be taking on.

Thanks for your opinion Everglide.

But I just want to make sure that the tuition fee at MSUCOM for non resident is $73k for 1 and 3 yr (include summer), and 50k in 2 and 4 yr. So, if I add up everything, it would be ~270k for tuition and fee only, not include living expense. While in AZCOM, the tuition is 47k/yr. I don't know how much for the fee in AZCOM but I think it would be additional 3k. So the total tuition and fee in AZCOM is about 50k/yr. I assume the living expense in glendale is cheaper than in lansing.

So, I don't know where you get your number and please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm OOS and don't have OOS scholarship. High tuition is the main thing keep me away from attending in MSUCOM🙁.

Wow, I knew the OOS tuition was high, but that's brutal, I feel for you guys.

Tell me about it! MSU was my No. 1 choice, and I was accepted. However, after crunching the numbers and, honestly, being scared to death on my visitation by the admissions lady, I have basically wiped it from the slate. Oh, well. There will be more (I hope).

How did she scare you? Just with the tuition numbers?

Forgive me, but I do not remember her name. Anyways, she seriously said (and I'm not exaggerating at all) that if you are from OOS and don't get a scholarship, then there is no reason you should come here because no school is worth that much money. She said that you couldn't be a primary physician with the debt you will accumulate as an OOS going to MSU. Although I don't really believe that, I was still startled by her comments and kind of weary of the school after that. I mean, why scare people off like that?

Yea, I was there and heard that too. However, I really appreciate what she told us because she was very honest about that. Not every counselor can give us such a honest advice especially it could against the school. I think she is right, and therefore I changed my mind from MSU to AZCOM. Plus, I don't feel very comfortable in a big school. I feel kind of lost in the huge school, not even mention to the terrible weather.

You completely missed my point. You're confusing cost of attendance with tuition rate.

IMO the cost difference is you're going to feel the extra 3 summer months at MSU (~25k) but then AZCOM has a higher 9 month COA so it will end up coming close overall. Also both schools obviously grossly over-estimate what you will need so take that into account.

Again, don't just compare tuition rates because schools use that to hide what you're really going to end up paying. Feel free to interpret these numbers however you would like....

(this is a year old, AZCOM tuition is higher than what the pdf says feel free to search for an updated one)

tldr version; You're going to end up in A LOT of debt at either school (nearly identical). Keep this in mind regardless of which school you end up going to.

I GOT IN WHOOOOOO!!!

Was complete Nov 1, good luck to everyone today!

CONGRATS TO EVERYONE GETTING ACCEPTED TODAY!!!

Everyone else, keep your hopes up, there is TONS of time still, and plenty of open spots! GOOD LUCK!🙂

@wanna

I'll probably stay in EL. My friends who are already in MSUCOM are in EL. Plus it's only about 40min from my parents.

@hitch

I'm in state and actually a MSU undergrad. MSU is definitely my number one choice. Good luck to everyone!

does anyone have a link for the letter of recommendation form? i'm not applying until next summer but i wanted to look it over and can't seem to find it on their website. thanks in advance and congrats to all of those accepted this year!

It is not on the website. They will send you the letter of recommendation form if you are granted a secondary application.

I have been trying to decide between these two schools for about 2 months now. For me, it came down to tuition and location (near my family).

I have finally settled on MSUCOM and I won't be looking back! I'm so stoked to be a spartan next year. I will be sending in my matriculation agreement ASAP.

Due to personal reasons, I just withdrew from this awesome school 🙁. Good luck to you all .

Hi,

For anyone who knows, how long does it usually take for MSUCOM to respond after your application is complete. They received all of my materials today and should be getting my letters forms by next week. I ask because I'm hoping to get an answer before school starts in January. If it would depend on stats I'm looking like GPA's >3.6, MCAT 10/8/8 (26) O and in-state.

Thanks,

Chance

does anyone know if the adcom is meeting this week?

AFAIK, they should be meeting tomorrow morning.

Assuming you have solid ECs... Whenever your letters of rec get in, you could hear back the next week. The last day the adcoms should be meeting this semester is the Dec 15th.

Can anybody link me to the website to pay the $700 deposit? I'm home for thanksgiving and realized I left the paper that says it in my desk at school :help:!
