MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if MSU-COM allows a lot of room for elective rotations? and how lenient they are towards finding your own rotation sites?

This is a list from the MSUCOM site about rotations. There are 20 weeks allowed for electives and 14 weeks allowed for selectives (which are rotations of your choice that you must do at your base hospital). Electives can be done almost anywhere including in other countries. At the open house in October, the dean said that they are always willing to help with whatever you need in regard to rotation specialties and applications! The core rotations must be done at your base hospital however and there really isn't any negotiation there.

Nothing again? Hard to believe if they didn't cause they for sure won't next week.

Hi everyone...so i got a response as a Canadian applicant

The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine is pleased to offer you a place on our waiting list for admission into the Class of 2017. We would be delighted to host a visit day for you, which would be your opportunity to interview us.

I'm so sad...i never knew they waitlisted Canadians. I thought they only high waitlisted or rejected. I dont understand the purpose of waitlisting a Canadian because I can't take any spot other than the 20 or so canadian spots. Am i missing something?

I don't know the answer to your question but I was wondering when you got the email.

Jay1234, I've been rooting for you in the most non-stalkerish way
I don't understand either. Your stats are like really good. I'm sorry 🙁 hugs!

I think maybe it just means the Canadian spots are full but the rest of the class is not full, so they are just waiting for that to start the high waist list. But I really don't know how they figure out wait list and high wait list for Canadians.

Yeah, how does that work? You go from regular wait list to high to admission?

wheres dr. meows she knows everything 😳

LOL this comment made me smile 🙂 😀 I'm sorry to hear about the waitlist first of all 🙁 currently being a member of 3 waitlists, it's pretty much the biggest buzz kill ever and i sympathize.

I've read MSUCOM threads over the last couple cycles, and from what I understand, u cannot change from the regular to high waitlist (someone correct me if I'm wrong, but i am pretty sure I'm right). Not to say it doesn't happen, but it looks like when they tend to pull they do so from the high waitlist, unfortunately - which leads one to ask the obvious question "whats the point of the regular waitlist?" Who knows. Especially being Canadian, and a competitive one at that in my opinion, I don't get the point.

I believe this is one of the schools where they take down how many interactions you have with them. The only advice i have is to contact them to ask what u can do and continue to keep in touch with them without being TOO annoying. Let them know u want them. Sorry I couldn't deliver better news, but I'm pretty sure that's the way it works at MSUCOM 👎 good luck!! We r all here rooting for ya!

Hey Jay, sorry to hear that..

Although I don't know what to make out of the "waitlist" response, I agree with Dr. Meows that you should ask the adcom to see what situation you're in exactly.

Canadian here waiting for response too. Was complete since July. So if the waitlist platter is being served for Canadians then I am pretty sure my order is coming soon. haha.

best of luck with your other applications though.

Thanks for the love guys!

I emailed Lorie, shes very nice so hopefully I get some good insight.

I hope you get in chace! If you get waitlisted maybe we will both be accepted still🙂

Dr. Meows I noticed you got into a different school, I'm so happy for you 🙂 you deserve it

Thank you so much 😀 it's a big relief, definitely. Hoping for some MSUCOM love though! :xf:

My roommate was complete about 3-4 weeks ago (Canadian). He just got the wait list email today as well. He has a 30P 3.98sGPA/3.96cGPA. I really don't think they have a high waitlist/guaranteed acceptance into the following year this application cycle.

They do have a high waitlist, but I don't think they start putting people on it until their class is technically "full" (i.e. given out 300 and whatever acceptances)

That makes me feel alot better. Maybe its because alot of people defer and then people for that application cycle are screwed?

But with such a high gpa I would figure that his roommate would not hear anything and then get high-waitlisted? What you dr. meows ? maybe there's hope after all😕

Hmmmm I honestly don't know. It sucks because he has really good stats. Maybe it has something to do with the fact he is Canadian - do a lot of Canadians get high-waitlisted? How many spots are there for Canadians (20? I'm not positive because I'm not Canadian). I feel like it would be very difficult to high waitlist many (if any) Canadians, guaranteeing them a spot for the next cycle, because of how few slots there are for them. High waitlisting even 5 Canadians one year makes even less spots for Canadians applying that next cycle. You know what I mean?

😕

Thats what i'm thinking. The last canadian to be accepted according to sdn was 2 weeks ago or so. I think we are the first few to hear waitlist. I have a feeling they didn't do high waitlist this year and are sticking just to just normal waitlist. Or atleast I hope that is the case. I presume they have filled the 20 spots and as accepted canadians decline they will maybe just take people off of waitlist. Just my hope :xf:

That's a good point. I hope you're right, I'm rooting for you! 😀

To those of you guys who checked out the sites, what did you guys think of them?

The next visit day is november 30th. there should be a day open in november. if not you should call admissions office and ask when the next day is

I went to the Detroit campus. I liked the fact that it is in close proximity to lots of big hospitals. I also like the fact that there are lots of medicinal students around. I'm not sure where I would live because I don't really want to live downtown but I do t want to fight traffic either.

Next time I will visit Macomb and I already have a possible house available to live at if I went to Lansing.

Guys i'm just wondering. Does the waitlist move in the order you were put on it (i.e. by complete date and waitlist date) or is it also based on stats and ranking?

Unfortunately based on stats and ranking.

Do you guys think committee will meet this week?

I am also assuming that they will not meet. I am going to tell myself they are not meeting and not even both about my emails that day. In fact, I think I should just turn off my phone all together for the holiday, lol.

Haha amen to that

Ughhh I would ASSUME not, but i hope so! It seems like the last couple Wednesdays have been really dead 👎

I see you have made it, Dr. meows. Congratulations! It is well deserved. 👍👍

Also got a question for those of you who have already made your deposits. Did MSU tell u whether or not ur top campus choice would be available? I sent in my forms two weeks ago. I got a confirmation email shortly afterwards, but they didn't mention anything regarding my campus choice. Did u guys get any response?

N for Canadians, have u started applying for ur visa yet? how does the process work?

Thanks for help!🙂🙂🙂

I was told they do not send out campus selections until January.
