My husbad and I will be moving from Southern California to East Lansing next Fall. I will be part of COM. We have both dealt with bad winters before on the East coast, so that will be nothing new. What types of extracurricular activities are there for us to help make the transition smoother. We love golf, hockey, etc. Any suggestions would be great (especially from people who can relate to such a drastic move)!!

golf for sure is plentiful. both the colleges courses are a ton of fun to play, and you and your husband would have a good time at the osteopathic open. it goes on in early september, its a golf outing with alot of physicians, doctors, etc and you can find alot of people with similar interests early on in your med school career. plus its played on a really nice course and typically students fees are sponsored by the physicians that go. as for hockey, well you got the wings, but tickets are expensive to say the least. some of my friends have season tickets to the spartans, and one professor you'll have for OMM is actually one of the team physicians. those games are always alot of fun. otherwise, lansing is dominated by the college scene mostly. in my class, we started a tennis group and anywhere from 4-12 of us would play at least once a week, spouses would play too. you'll find someone in your class is interested in just about whatever you think is fun, and try some new things because of it too!

If you can think of it, there is a place to do it here. There are hundreds of student otrganizations. Every sport imaginable, to play or watch. Great athletic facilities on campus open to students(tracks, tennis courts, pools, workout equipment ect.). I would not know where to start to list everything there is to do here.

I just moved to Michigan from Hawaii several months ago. So far I have been canoeing, camping, jogging, bikeriding, and ice skating. Michigan is pretty flat overall but there are a couple of places a few hours drive from E. Lansing where you can ski/snowboard for very reasonable prices.

I have a membership at a gym and take a Taekwondo class-which is a lot of fun, and great excercise. Also, the cold is not as bad if you force yourself to go out into it once a day and not let it turn you into a total indoor person.

Its a big change from warm weather climate-but there is plenty to do around here, if you look around.

what does pretty flat mean?? Michigan is a great place to live and there are plenty of things to do, but it does depend on what you like to do. try to go online and look up michigan activities or something like that. hope you enjoy your stay here. 😉

Uhhh...pretty flat means pretty flat. Michigan was carved flat by glaciers during the last glacial retreat, the state is basically in the shape of a large basin. If you have lived near mountains, this can come as a shock.

Yeah, but doesn't it take a whole day to drive up there? I wanted to go hiking up there this summer but couldn't find enough time before the weather got too cold.
