I got my secondary from MSU-COM. I am thinking about dropping it alltogether. I got pros and cons about the school. People that have any comment or feedback to help me make my decision please chip in.

Pros:
1. Good school

Cons:
1. Outragious out of state tuition
2. Over 90% of the class is from in state
3. Pain in the ... secondary, they don't accept LORs, only their forms.
4. Way too cold for a floridian.

Please, comment I would like to know more about the school and maybe decide to complete the secondary.
Thanks

When I talked to the admission team last year, they said they would offer me the ability defer admission for a year.

My only complaint is that last year they stopped doing interviews and accepted people based purely on completeness of application. This was a huge turn-off for me.

However, take my opinion for what it is worth. I applied the week before the deadline and was denied. As an out-of-stater it is imperative to submit your application and secondary ASAP! Good luck!

Wait they only take letter of recs on their forms? That blows, what about a premed committee letter?

You can use letter of recs but those who made them must fill out a portion on the MSU forms along with you. Then they must be sent to the school by the evaluator.

Its a pain if the person you want to do it doesnt live close by.

Yeah, it can be a pain. You do what you have to do to get where you want to go.

MSU-COM can be a pain. I am from MI so I knew ahead of time the additional requirements from MSU via doing my own research, so that when I was asking for LORs I warned my writers that some schools may require extra paperwork. Many times if you let them know ahead of time, they will be willing. Besides, professors who write LORs probably do it all the time. Dont be afraid to go back and ask for more work. Its one extra document for them and the rest of our lives for us.

Re: MSU-COM being worth it....the tuition for out-of-staters is a little ridiculous. The high tuition is something one cant really get used to, on the other hand the weather is. Summer and Fall here are actually very nice.

Do we out of staters, gain in-state status after the first year ??

I don't think so. I think only UMDNJ does that.

Yea I love Michigan for the seasons 🙂

Ohio also has in state tuition after a year of residence. Also as a reminder to those who don't know, MSUCOM has added 2 new science prereqs for their school, genetics and biochem. 😉 Good luck to those that are applying.!

Yep... I'm definately dropping my MSU-COM app. It is impossible for me to reach two of my recommenders, since one doesn't check her e-mail, and the other one is no longer a professor at my school. Oh well... I applied to enough schools, hopefully I'll get into one of them.

I am thinking the same thing. Too bad, I really like the school's reputation.

I withdrew my application from there. I did for Ohio as well because of their contract you must sign to work in Ohio for 5 years post-residency. Ick!

Yeah, it seems that the state O schools are pretty harsh on out of staters. 😳

Nice if you like temps of 95+ for several days in a row with the humidity through the roof! Then the next day might snow...gotta love our great state!

Haha... sounds like Maine... reasons why I'm not staying there for another four years of schooling if I can help it.

Never caught 5 yaer thing, any other schools have that stipulation?

On another note, has anyone tried contacting MSU about the whole special rec form thing. I really want to apply but there is know way I can reach my recommenders. Ugh, really liked the school too.

i remember reading PSCOM is only interested in making do's for the area they are in. so i dont think they take anyone else from other parts of the country.... :-\

does anybody agree with me that the guy's name should Zinedine Zidumb (instead of Zidane).

really 😱 I totally missed it, just signed it, how stupid of me!
do you know if they have this ocntract online so I can read it?
thanks

hmm I am not sure, I kept my materials for a day to think about it, and then threw it away. I called them up to withdraw my application, but they never returned the call.
I remember the contract saying that he 5 years had to be done in the state of ohio; residency, fellowships, and other internships DO NOT count towards the 5 years.
In lay-man's terms: you won;t be out of ohio until you are in your mid-30's...if your lucky!
I think I'd rather join the army and have them pay for my med school than go to Ohio!!

And no offense to people who choose that, I just prefer the northeast!

I remember the contract also saying that you can get out of the contract but you will have to reimburse the state for the money that you saved for paying in state tuition, and some other legal stuff that sounds like it's a hassel.
