MSUCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had.... 6 jobs listed, 1 volunteer activity, and 1 extracurricular... and got accepted--- so methinks quality>quantity...

I work full time, part time, and take a full class load~~ so it's not like i had much time for anything else anyway!

I have similar stats as you do, and when I met with the admissions advisor in May, she told me not to expect to hear anything until late October/early November. It is all because of their algorthythm so the people who get looked at (go to committee) first are the 3.6+GPA and 30+ MCAT. They meet every Tuesday, so if you don't hear anything on Wednesday morning, follow the "no news is good news" addage.

Well if they only look at people with 3.6+ gpa and 30+ MCAT, then why have so many people with lesser stats been accepted already.

Come on MSUCOM send me the stupid email already, I think I will have a heart attack if I have to wait any longer. As each week goes by I feel my blood pressure rising to new highs...which is not good since heart disease is rampant in my family.

DUDEEE the loss to Wisconsin was such a heartbreak, UGHHHH we had the game but lost in typical Spartan fashion.

1) questionable penalties
2) ******ed play calling in the last few minutes
3) shooting ourself in the foot

I hate the Badgers, they always beat MSU in almost every sport. Devin Harris was a thorn in our side his whole college career. And how the hell is Wisconsin #5, they SUCK, look at the teams they played so far, only test was MSU which they barely won.

This is your week Desijigga. I got my email at about 10:30 last week.

All I can say is what the admissions people told me. But, if you look at the service/experience hours of the people admitted, that probably increases their score. Like I had outlined in a previous post, there are 4 factors, each weighted differently, that go into your score; MCAT, Science GPA, Overall GPA and # of service hours. They then take the top 20% from that score. So, I can only assume that the mix of all 4 of their numbers is what got them looked at already. And once you get in committee, they look at the quality of experiences and LOR's. It's just the numbers that get you in the door. Also, it is still early in the cycle, so it will be harded to get looked at the later it gets.

They say that they try to have their class full by mid december.

Hey Speeter,

I'm from your BMS 222 class and happened to noticed this interesting forum site that you were on. Let's just say the powerpoint slides aren't exactly stimulating. I'm a freshman right now (a newbie to the medical field) and wondering if you can answer three quickquestions of mine.
1) I was just wondering what you declared your major at GV as? Biology? Chemistry? Bio-medical?

2) What's the big difference between a DO and a MD, I understand that a DO takes a more holistic approach to patient care and trys to avoid medication-but are there any understanding pros or cons for either field? Is one field easier to enter than another?

3) How do you go about applying for medical school? Whats the secondary interviews and such all about? What are typical GPAs and MCAT scores to get into the program?

Thanks for your wisdom should you choose to reply...haha

Sorry man, I have been a little edgy lately (my bad if you felt I was personally attacking you). I know what you mean, its not your fault they have such a ******ed system of screening out applicants and taking our money.

Nope not this week 🙁. To be honest I really don't care anymore, if I get in to MSUCOM great, but if not screw them. Thanks for the support though.

This wasn't my week either 🙁. Oh well...no news is better than bad news, right? I'll start getting worried around December.

I disagree with number 2, specifically the bit about avoiding medication.

Hunt me down after class on Friday. I can tell you everything you need/want/ever wanted to know. This forum is an awesome resource, but you have to discern fact from opinion. I have from 2-3 friday with nothin goin on.

Also, I would categorize the powerpoint slides as mind-numbing; a far cry from stimulating. If it weren't for the internet I would have hung myself from the projector by now.

did anyone hear today? I didn't 🙁 but no news isn't bad news right . . .

I disagree with number 2, specifically the bit about avoiding medication.

I also disagree with number 2, however I do know that is what A LOT MD's like to say about DO's because of, for lack of better words, ignorance and big-headedness (wow my mind is fried!)

No hard feelings....I tend to be blunt most of the time so and I was at work writing quickly, so it probably came out more defensive than it was meant to anyways.

Hey guys. About how long after your primary was mailed did you hear from MSUCOM? Just curious.

Is it bad or good to be told they want to see my grades from Fall 07?

Did they say you are on the waitlist, or on hold? I would consider it a good thing assuming you nail the semester. GL

Alright Thanks Speeter-I talk to you after class.

As far as the....

I totally agree,no internet to save me,thus everyday I fumble with a revolver and play "Russian Roulette". Surprising nothing bad has happened yet.

Number of service hours is the stupidest thing for them to weight numerically. I can easily lie and say I have 2000 hours when I really only have 1000. Are they really going to confirm? Probably not.

At least GPA and MCAT can't be inflated at the last second.

It would be much more considerate of you to chow down on a cyanide capsule; for the sake of your classmates' clothing.

Hey guys. About how long after your primary was mailed did you hear from MSUCOM? Just curious.

Mine was mailed 7/19. July 31st I began to wonder why I had not received my supplemental application so I called them. The apologized for the delay and sent it to me minutes later via email.

You may already be aware, but if not, you can access their secondary online and have it ready to go by the time you receive their official supplementary email. http://www.com.msu.edu/admissions/adm.sec.app/

I looked at my last years waitlist email and found something encouraging.

"Previous years wait-lister's are automatically granted an interview the following year" LOL

Too bad you barely interview...

I'm proud to be a part of the longest "discussion thread". I think over half of my SDN posts are here.

Am I the only person who has interview at MSUCOM??? 🙄

I got an email saying my application is on hold until they receive my fall grades which includes Biochemistry. I hope its just because Biochem is a prerequisite, I really want to go to MSU.

I'm in biochem right now too. I don't think that's a problem with them.

Yes! Its wednesday, but I think I'm a bit early ~2am. So nervous...:scared:

like do they tell people all day, or at a set time

It's consistently been in the morning from my observations...

yo its morning time right now... so nervous

I think it is later morning, so don't worry even though I am waiting impatiently as well.

honestly im sittin here refreshing my email page every 5 secs

Thanks r2cole1. Fenderguitarman, did you complete genetics yet? I was just wondering if they want both of them completed or at least one before they make a decision.

They do send out a letter that arrives a few days after the email. I know that some people's spam filters send msu com email to the garbage. Maybe he missed the email, or maybe he's lying.

when the primary app is verified and you add another school later, how long does it take for the status to go from "not mailed" to processed? Just wanted to see what everyones experience has been with this so far. Thanks!

I think they mail once a week. I added a few schools on a thursday and they were mailed by the following wednesday.

Once a week? I thought they sent everything by email for the schools to download. See how much I know. 😀

I was expecting for today.

did you get in then?

not yet,

Is it natural to feel desperate now?

mine was completed on Sep 22

Don't they say not to worry until about December?

I'm a bit worried
b/c two applicants I knew has got in within 15 days after they completed

Today it feels like the MCAT score release day. I can't focus on anything now
unless I make sure wether I'm included in this week's acceptance or not.

Has this week's decision already been made? Perhaps someone should call them to see where they stand. I would, but my phone is out... I'm getting quite worried as well!
