Hi everyone,
I am a Canadian student that has been recently placed on the tier 1 waitlist for acceptance at MSUCOM. From what I heard, everyone from tier 1 and half of tier 2 got accepted last year (there're 3 tiers: tier 1 being the highest/next in line for acceptance). So, I am quite confident that I will get in at MSUCOM. Last week, I also got an interview invite to MUCOM. I don't know whether I should go to the interview, for I really like MSUCOM (it has been my 'dream school'). I don't hear back from MSUCOM until April 1st, but the MUCOM interviews are in mid-March. What would your advice be for me? Should I go to the MUCOM interview?

Let's say if I get accepted in both MSUCOM (Michigan) and MUCOM (Marian), which one would you choose? I have heard that MSUCOM is a more established school while Marian is relatively new (opened in 2013?) Would where I go affect my chances at residency?

Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you for your help🙂,
Amyleo

Have you been accepted to any other schools? If not, I would attend the interview at MUCOM. I'm not familiar with either school, but I would attend all interviews until I have an acceptance.

No, I haven't been accepted anywhere, but am on the waitlist for interview at AZCOM and Kansas City.

If you are not accepted any where else definitely go to the MUCOM interview. Now, hypothetically, if you are eventually accepted to both MSUCOM and MUCOM, the decision is easy. Take the offer from MSUCOM in a heart beat. MSUCOM is one of the best DO schools and you will have a good education and match outcomes. MUCOM, based upon what I have read here on SDN, has not even created one residency position since its inception, and they try to place/match students in MSUCOM's network. Lastly, as a Canadian, I believe you qualify for some type of tuition discount at MSUCOM as well.

MSU-COM is 80k out of state. I'm assuming that it's the same for international. I would take that into consideration

Definitely go, make the acceptance decisions once you have them. You only get one chance at interviewing at medical schools, there's nothing to lose by attending.

What happened last year is not the same as "will happen this year." It would be a very, very bad decision to forego an interview because you expect to get in elsewhere.

Nothing in life is guaranteed my anonymous friend! You hold no acceptances, and I would definitely attend your MUCOM interview just in case.

If you are fortunate enough to choose, MSUCOM 100%. I believe they give out good scholarships to Canadians to reduce that 80k tuition, but I'm not entirely sure.

Let us summon some savvy SDNers on the MSU info: @Scrubs101 @femmegoblue @DrPatriot

Until you have an acceptance in hand attend all interviews you get!

But yes i believe i heard most Canadians get a scholarship of some sort to get it down to the 60k range.

Unless you absolutely fall in love with MUCOM, id hands down go MSU if you get in and its between those two. MSUCOM OPTI is absolutely huge, great research opportunities from what ive heard(most funding out of any DO school i believe), the school is very established(in comparison to MUCOM which is new), big ten campus if youre into that, etc. Definitely an easy choice especially if the tuition does get down to that 60k range, also theres tons of other scholarships you can apply for if youre worried about it. Check out the MSUCOM website for more info on that.

Best of luck OP!

FOR SURE attend the MUCOM interview, that should be a no brainer. Then, if accepted to MUCOM and MSUCOM, I think you should attend MSUCOM. You'll get the Canadian scholarship to bring down tuition, if you live frugally it will be fine and MSUCOM is a much more established school than MUCOM. However, if you end up also getting off the WL at KCU, I say go KCU since the tuition is 44K, which is a lot less than MSU even with the Canadian scholarship (which I think makes it around 55-60?)

Forget AZCOM, unless of course it becomes your only acceptance!

Go to the MUCOM interview for sure!....You don't have an acceptance yet so don't burn any bridges.

If you were accepted to both then that is a completely different question. Canadian students are eligible for a ~$20k reduction in tuition at MSUCOM and MSU has a stronger program. I am obviously in a better position to answer questions about MSUCOM being a first year but if you have any specific questions I'd be happy to help out.

Thanks so much everyone!
I'm definitely going to follow everyone's advice and attend the interview at MUCOM. But if I get accepted to both, I'll be going with MSUCOM. If I hear back from MSUCOM (get accepted) before the MUCOM interview, I'm going to cancel that interview and become a Spartan:bow:
