Mt. Sinai not filling?

yeah I got that one too. They didnt fill. I filled out the survey. I heard similar stories from around the interview trail about bad experiences and odd residents.

It is definitely true that Mt. Sinai didn't fill this year. Neither did Pitt County/ECU - both of which are solid programs (or so I thought). Also, what's up with Yale not filling either? I would love to know the gossipy back stories that led to these outcomes.

Didn't happen to me but I heard the same firsthand from other interviewees. One girl was downright pissed coming out of the interview.

I think we all support gossip and unsubstantiated rumors!

As long as Shelly Jacobson is the chair, it's going to be snobby. He wants all Harvard and Yale (but the residents come from about every area of the country, med-school-wise). He's the reason for the short list. I would have given the little finger on my R hand to get a spot there, and I was universally liked by the residents (I'm not kidding - I fit right in with them), but Shelly dictated that I be left off the match list.

Odd residents today is a little strange - when I was at Elmhurst 2002-2003, they were superstars (I wasn't at the time, but I tried to emulate them). (And not that I am now - but I get by.)

I knew one of the guys that matched there. He used to wear a toupe (a really bad one). I didn't apply to that program because of that toupe alone. I had nightmares about being in a trauma and having his toupe fall into the thoracotomy incision. I thought, I can't be a part of that, it would be to awkward.

Weird because ECU didn't fill last year either.

I wonder if since EM is becoming more competitive, applicants are going to more and more places; ie 15-20 interviews instead of the 'regular' 8-10; and PD's aren't making a big enough rank list factoring that in. IE, with the same 100 interviews traveling around the country, someone is going to end up short.

I did residency at Sinai so I have a lot of insight. They won't interview any FMGs or DOs (unless they have a close connection to someone on staff). I think they didn't fill in 2003 either, and they didn't scramble the spot b/c it was a 2-3 program back then, and they had time....ended up getting a resident from OBGYN who switched into the program who went on to be chief. In the past they've gotten excellent people from the scramble, so they were never too unhappy about not filling (there were 2 other years I know of and they got some of their best residents this way switching from other fields b/c of late exposure to EM, etc)...

I think the main problem is now there are so many programs in the NYC area they have to start interviewing a wider audience and get a longer rank list. Apollyon is right about the list, I'm sure he got a stellar letter to get him into Duke, but Sinai went unfilled his year. This year I had a great medical student at my program who was an FMG and I sent an e-mail over to Sinai asking them to interview her. No interview granted at Sinai, and she ended up at her top choice at USC in California.

Sinai is an excellent program, but there's a lot of competition in the area. Bellevue, Jacobi and NYP are really fighting for residents that want to do 1-4 in NYC, and interview the same people. Right there, that's over 50 spots, so if you only do 100 interviews, and you're all interviewing the top people, the numbers are against you. With St Luke's and all the other 3 yr programs as well, it means you really have to interview a lot and have a long list....much different than 8 yrs ago. With all the NYC programs now it's really the medical student's market now and the programs should be trying to impress you, not the other way around.

An FMG (from SGU) got a spot this year at Mt. Sinai. Whether he matched or scrambled into it, either way, I'm not sure what this says about them "not interviewing FMG's or DOs". My guess, the person who matched there probably had connections that vouched for him.

It's good to see that changing. It's also possible he/she just did a rotation there and did a nice job.
