Greetings everyone. So I'm trying to decide between attending MUA or AUA. Overall, I'm leaning towards AUA because of its higher success rates in having their students enter a residency position. That being said, MUA is now offering you the ability to utilize federal loans. MUA seems to be on an up-and-coming path. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time,

Having student loans gives MUA an advantage but do a lot of research on licensure and be sure there are no other options before the Caribbean route.

MUA isn't Cali/it's affiliated states accredited. I *think* they're going through the process, but since Cali approval takes the longest, no one knows when they'll be approved.
If you must choose between the two, i'd pick AUA...given you've already tried for US MD/DO schools for a cycle or two.

Never trust a Caribbean medical school that is up and coming. All the less established schools say this and for most, this turn out be a facade. If your going to gamble so much time and money, make sure you choose a school with an established history of success.

Thanks for the info!

Just had my interview with MUA , I am so nervous. I don't know if I did good. I really really want to be accepted. I am afraid I did not pass. 🙁 🙁 :*(

Hi Kamila, I am presently attending MUA and we can discuss further. I wish I had someone willing to discuss with me before attending.I would have arrived at a more informed decision....

Hmmm... over on another thread, you said...

Attending in spring 2016

Curious. So, which is it? You are currently attending, or you are starting next spring?

Caveat emptor people. This is the internet.

Yes. I am presently in MUA Med 1 and intend to resume my studies in AUA next spring 2016 at AUA.

Why? Please elaborate.

Excellent question, Skip!

Why would someone transfer away from a school with student loans?

AUA has student loans. I've met a number of great transfer candidates from a variety of schools. Some are looking for smaller class size, more modern island or CA & NY recognition/approval.

MUA has this.
But agree on CA recognition.

The CA approval at AUA and now the title IV approval for Financial Aid; perhaps we'll soon be talking about the big 5!

I think, overall, that the thing everyone should focus on is residency placement. Look at past Match lists posted from the schools. This is a good barometer of where you likely end-up training. Many residency programs will go "back to the well" if they have a good experience with graduates.

The legal stuff... that is always subject to change. Just remember, though, most of the subsequent license approvals are not retroactive. You aren't necessarily "grandfathered" in if you attended a school during the times that they were not approved. Some licensing boards may never grant you a permanent license to practice in that state unless you repeat coursework.

Convoluted? Yes. You can be board-certified and practicing independently in a specialty in one state for years with an absolutely blemish-free career... and, still not be able to get licensed in another state if you want to move, your personal situation changes, etc.

I got accepted at AUA and I am getting ready to start in February 2016. If anyone have some tips like what to bring to Island or housing please feel free to contact me 🙂
