Hello,

I searched, but I couldn't find an exact answer.

I graduated from college last year, and I am taking a few postbacc classes for fun. Unfortuantely, I don't think I will be able to request a transcript from by postbacc university until mid/late June, and I will be applying ED to a program (August 1 deadline). Therefore, I want to know if I register and send in my college transcript (which has about 30 classes) around June 1, will AMCAS verify all these grades and wait until I send in my transcript from my postbacc work (5 classes) to completely verify my applciation. Also, if I already have an account with AMCAS, will the second transcript still take 2-6 weeks, or will it take less, given that I am already in line and they are just waiting to finsih my application

Thanks!

can you get a transcript that says class in progress? You can send that to AMCAS and you can get verified without including the grades you haven't received.

You won't be able to be verified without sending in those transcripts.

But do you know if they will verify the first transcript while they are waiting for the second one

Yes, I've been in this exact situation. Just order a transcript now from the postbacc university. They will give you one (I think they have to by law if you've paid your bill) and it will just have "pending" or nothing next to the grades for the courses you are in.

Yes, AMCAS will verify it, and you're supposed to send an updated transcript when the grades come in, although AMCAS doesn't bug you about this and you could probably get away with not doing it until after a school accepted you (if the grades were bad for some reason)

I mean, follow the rules, I'm just trying to illustrate that it isn't quite the draconian surveillance state you might think it is. As a medical applicant, you're just one small fish in a very big pond, even if you've got the grades, MCATs, and ECs to become one of the over 20,000 people accepted. (including osteopaths)

Do you know if when you update your grades, does AMCAS send your school a new verified transcript and a new calculated gpa?

no. It's your responsibility to send the updated transcript to each school. Once you are verified, AMCAS won't bother you.

Actually, yes, they do.

Here's the correct way to go :

a. Get those materials to AMCAS NOW.
b. Work on your essay, so that the very hour AMCAS verifies your transcript you can immediately paste it in and submit your application to medical schools
This application will not have the updated transcript with the updated GPA
c. Medical schools will automatically send you secondaries, where you have to fill out a form, write some essays, and pay money
d. Most, if not all, schools are not going to print out your application from AMCAS until they receive your secondary application. Why bother? They send nearly all applicants secondaries with minimal screening.

So while you're working on secondaries, your updated transcript could be waiting in line at AMCAS to be entered into the computer.

By the time medical schools get your secondary, your primary app would have been updated with your new GPA.

The approach I just described gets that app in as soon as possible, because a few weeks of delay does count.

Oh, and schools aren't going to even look at updated transcripts, because it would be too much work for them to recalculate your GPA. Most of the junk that premeds send them never gets looked at. Only GPA they're likely to consider is the one from AMCAS (which, again, does get updated)

AMCAS won't do ANYTHING with your transcripts until you've paid your fee and hit submit. You can't edit things while you wait in line for transcript review. There's no predictable gap, if any gap exists, between AMCAS verifying your transcripts and AMCAS shooting your app out to the world.

Re other comments, sending a preliminary transcript to AMCAS, that doesn't have grades on it, doesn't do anything for you. You don't want to do anything that puts you in a "we don't understand this" pile that leads to an administrative hassle. Just pre-order your final transcript and pay a rush fee and hope for the best.

As others have mentioned on here, you can mark coursework as "in progress" (this is what college seniors do) until the transcripts are available. For pending courses, you will be expected to update the grades when they become available. If you have completed a course(s) at your post-bacc institution, you should provide the transcript with the grades from last semester and should not mark those courses as "in progress."

Many instructors are willing to expedite reporting of your grades to your institution if they know that you are applying to grad school. Some registrar's make the completion of "senior" transcripts a priority for the same reason. I would ask for such a courtesy if it is possible.
