For those of you who do locums in multiple states, how many DEA licenses do you maintain?

One for each state?

Totally two for rotation?

How long does it take to transfer the DEA license?

Will government be unhappy for frequent transfers?

Question: Once I obtain a DEA registration can I prescribe controlled substances anywhere in the United States as it is a Federal number?

Answer: No. A DEA individual practitioner registration is based on a State license to practice medicine and prescribe controlled substances. DEA relies on State licensing boards to determine whether a practitioner is qualified to dispense, prescribe, or administer controlled substances and to determine which schedules he/she may dispense, prescribe, or administer. State authority to conduct the above-referenced activities only confers rights and privileges within the issuing State. Thus, a DEA registration based on a State license cannot authorize controlled substance dispensing outside the State. See Registration Requirements for Individual Practitioners Operating in a "Locum Tenens" Capacity, 75 FR 55499, 55501 (Oct. 28, 2009); 21 U.S.C. 823(f); 21 CFR 1306.03(a). Presently 2. And only because a hospital paid for one ... and I feel morally obligated to leave that DEA # tied to that hospital.

One for each state?
No.

Totally two for rotation?
This works for me. For a long time I only had one.

Intrastate - usually about one weekday. Takes a week or so to get the new hard copy certificate in the mail but you can get the PDF online very quickly.

Interstate - usually a couple days. I think a human has to look at it and verify that you typed in a valid license for the new state. Some states require a controlled substance license or registration too, and I think the DEA has a human look that up too.

Will government be unhappy for frequent transfers?
No. They don't care.

Not in a timely fashion but generally yes but you have to practice in and link it to an address in that state each time.

Some states have separate state licenses you need to do so as well.
