Just a general question to clear things up for my self, i always see people on here talking about how advantageous it is to have multiple settings. Does this just mean Inpatient, outpatient, wound care, schools, etc or should i also consider observing multiple inpatient settings and/or multiple outpatient settings.

Also i wanted to observe a couple hours a week during the semester when im up at school 4 hours away from my hometown, is there any problems with this?

Well, inpatient and outpatient are the two main categories, and wound care, schools, hospitals, and free-standing practices are sub-categories. You just want to tick off a bunch of boxes, rather than just observing in one or two places for 50 hours each.

Are you observing in your hometown? So you'll have to drive home every week to observe? If that's the case, it sounds like a waste of time. Many places are willing to let you shadow, so try to find something close to your school. That's how I did all my observation - 2-4 hours a week, for a full year, and extra hours on winter and summer breaks.

I was planning on observing at school, how many hours should i aim for before i switch and look for a different setting?

Check the schools you're interested in, if that helps. Some require 40 hours in inpatient, some want a minimum number of hours at each setting for them to count, and some don't care as long as you meet the total number of hours. I did anywhere from 30-80 in each setting. I enjoyed the settings where I got 80, so that's not necessary. I would aim between 20-40 hours for each one, more hours if you feel like you're learning a lot and really enjoy the place that you're observing at.

Im applying in 2 years, how should i go about, keeping in contact with them? Should keep a log of the amount of hours and take down their email for when i apply in 2 years.
