Murdoch Feb 2013
Started by remi4301
I got accepted for the Feb 2013 start, but deferred my enrollment for 1 year to get my financial situation figured out.
I applied for the Sept 30th deadline, they emailed me my acceptance Oct. 24 as an international student ( U.S. to Australia). If you're going to be an international student there, they may reply back faster because it starts in 2 months!

I am starting the vet program at Murdoch this February.. I aplied for the march deadline and had an answer by april 23rd. Im going to be an international student there (US to AU). Have you heard yet??? It is a LOT of money to get togetther to start in a month but it can be done.. loans would be amazing and US financial aid will kick in soon after getting settled! PM me if you have any questions
The biggest piece of advice that I can give international students at this point in time is to have some extra money you can access for the first few months your over here... Murdoch is notoriously slow at getting fin aid to students (in years gone past some students didnt recieve any until may!) and while I think they have picked up their game a bit now, being prepared might not hurt...
Welcome to WA - Wait Awhile.... 🙄

I am looking into applying for Murdoch. What is the March deadline? Are there two times per year that you can apply?
(I am also from the US; can you tell me more about how the financial aid works?)

Applications for the Veterinary program at Murdoch must be made in advance of the following deadlines for entry into Semester 1 of the following year:
31 March
30 June
30 September
30 November
So there are four application cycles in each year for entry into Murdoch's veterinary science degree.
Lady Wombat to the rescue! ;D You rock!
So, that means I have a shot applying before March to get in September 2014?

The vet program only starts once a year and that is in February of each year. That is their semester one. So I applied like march 20th, got my offer of acceptance by April 23rd 2012, and now I will start in feb. 2013. Financial aid is pretty simple just slow. You have to apply as an independent on your fasfa but if you don't Murdoch will correct it and make you an independent. With the new rules professional programs do not get subsidized loans but I am getting like 20,000 USD in unsubsidized loans and then I am getting the rest of my cost of attendance in Grad Plus loans. My tuition is about 47K this year I believe but my loans add up to about 80K. So about 30K to live off of for the year: books, food (no campus meal plan), and rent for on campus apartment.the rest will go to savings and hopefully I can get a job after I get settled and the hang of Australian vet school. You can't plan on working to survive in OZ because you can only work 20 hours a week (40hours per fortnight) during the school year and then you can work full time during school breaks. That's all the quick n dirty details I can think of from the US prospective. Feel free to ask anything else!

You'll find that all veterinary courses in Australia only have one yearly intake of new students (in late February/early March) I image this is because it would be too difficult to have two separate cohorts that start in the same calendar year. So if you apply before the March 2013 deadline you are applying for a spot in the February/March 2014 intake.
Australian university dates are different to the US as we have our long break over December-February in our Summer whereas I think yours are in June-July. I'm not sure how it works over in the US but both Melbourne and Murdoch have two semesters, Semester 1 which starts generally in late February/early March and Semester 2 which starts the end of July. You also get a break of around 1 to 2 weeks in each semester and you also get one week after the teaching semester ends, this week is called SWOT Vac and is supposed to be a week where you study for all your upcoming exams. Basically over in Australia a lot of your subject marks are weighted towards exams 🙁 I did get some small tests during the semester but these only counted for a small percentage of my final marks. This may not be true for all courses but I found this when studying both my bachelors and masters science degrees. Once the examination period is over you get around 1 month off between the end of the examination period in semester 1 and the start of semester 2.
To give you an example this is Melbourne's academic calender for 2013 (sorry but I don't have Murdoch's on hand but I'm sure its similar):
Monday 4 March to Sunday 2 June (Semester 1: 12 teaching weeks)
Good Friday 29 March Sunday 7 April (Easter Non Teaching Period)
Monday 3 June Sunday 28 July (Winter Recess - 8 weeks)
Monday 3 June Friday 7 June (SWOT Vac)
Tuesday 11 June Friday 28 June (Examinations)
Monday 29 July to Sunday 27 October (Semester 2: 12 teaching weeks)
Monday 30 September to Sunday 6 October (Non Teaching Period)
Monday 28 October to Friday 1 November (SWOT Vac)
Monday 4 November to Friday 22 November (Examinations)
I feel like such a dummy! Of course the semester starts in February, ugh, blonde moment! lol (I can say that, I'm blonde, hehehe).
GeekOut, so when you say financial aid, do you mean US financial aid or Australia financial aid?
I am married, so the biggest thing we're trying to figure out now is getting my husband over with me. He is a fire fighter, don't know what kind of visa he might be able to get, if any. *sigh*

so mmad! i just had a huge long response and it deleted! SOOO to start over hahah
Yes, I am talking about US financial aid. Once you apply and recieve your offer of acceptance, then you can fill out the FASFA as an indepedent and also apply for Grad Plus loans. I just now received my award letter by email a couple days ago and I have been accepted since end of april! I finally know that the US will give me some money! Murdoch is AVMA accredited so the US will grant students money to go there plus they have study abroad programs established with US undergraduate programs. I think I explaiined a bunch of other details on another thread, but let me know if there is still confusion.
Next the student visa. You can apply online 4 monthss before your start date, so October for me since classes start on Feb 15th I believe. You apply for your student visa and put your husbands details including passport number in under your visa as your spouse and you declare on there that he plans to come with you. simple as that. After you apply, They will ask you for relationship evidence. This includes marriage certificates, bank statements in both your names, and bills in both your names, even a wedding photo can be scanned in and uploaded to the document site they tell you. They may ask for an FBI report. Make sure you get an FBI report wellll in advance of applying for the visa because you only have 28 days to attach requested documentts and the FBI report takes up to 12 weeks to process.. They ma not ask for this, but it is only 12 dollars or something to get FBI report. The only major downside to him being on your student visa as your partner is that you are both limited to working only 20 hours per week or 40 hours per fortnight (each) during school terms and full time during breaks. SO i suggest looking at the Dept of Immigration website thouroughly for a few weeks to get a good understanding. If you are still confused you cann go through a mgration agent; however that will cost alot! The website is: http://www.immi.gov.au/
Once you are on the website look up skilled migrant visa. there will be a list of jobs that they are looking for and you can get tha visa. I do not know how these work per se but i know another girl did that and she got australian tuition while her husband got to work full time the whole time.
My other suggestion is that you google some blogs of other North American Vet students in down under. There was two really good ones. One was from a lady and her husband plus dogs from minnesota that headed to Murdoch and another girl from California who has now since graduated from Murdoch, married an Aussie guy and now works down there. She has been there a total of 8 years. but both blogs highlight a lot of aspects of the school. from the course load, to how grading and exams are, how Western Australia truely means Wait Awhile. I can not waiit to not be in fast-paced america and experience a new culture! i will try to find the links to the blogs, but I really enjoyed readinng them i have read them through twice. a good google search should let you find them like I did. My computer crashed so I lost all my favorites otherwise I could give them to you rightt now!
Next your animals, I did a lot of research on how to bbring my two kitties and i wont be able to afford it right away nor will I ship them until I know where i am going to practice after graduation. Its miserable thinking I wont have them sleeping literally on top of me for up to 5 years, but at least I know my parents will take good care of them, or my boyfriend will if he cannot come with me for some reason. The immigration websites will give you linnks to find all the information you need. but you need to follow a very strict timeline with titers and vaccine and you have to go to a goverment vet or somethinng like that, and get a lot of documentation certified. after those inital costs then there is finding a flight for them, then if you followed the timeline exactly theyy will only be in quarentine for a month (which you have to pay for their stay their, the second animal gets a slight discount), but if the timeline is off at all then they could be quarentined for up to 6months. It could be as low as $3000 or up to 10,000 if you use a pet agency which some people swear by and others havve done the processs themselves to save money. do a LOT of research for your pets so you can get the timeline sttarted as soon as possible if you have the funds to bring them immediately. A website called YanksDownUnder has a LOT of information on australia and pet transport..
Next, once you apply and are accepted you are given 30 days to accept your seat which includes sending in $1000 to save your seat and paying for youur Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) up fronnt for all 5 years. The school quoted me 2500 for health insurance for myself for all 5 years. I went with another company called NIB to get innsurance for me and my boyfriend under couples insurance for $3800 for all 5 years. Other companies have single or family, no couples. The one company wanted $6000 for all 5 years for the two of us under a fammily plan. Just so you know what will happen once acceptance is offered. I had no idea how much I had to pay up front and thankfully my parents chipped in a little bit! I am only 22 and was still taking my undergraduate courses when I applied sooo i didn;t have too much saved anymore!
ii hope i answered most of your questionns! Sorry about all the double letters, Im on a bluetooth keyboard for my ipad thats really weird and iit keeps doing funny things as I type! GRR hahaha

Murdoch classes are also two semesters for the vet program:
for 2013 classes start on Feb 18:
there is 4 weeks of teaching periods, one week study break, another 4 week teaching period, 2nd week study break, 4 more weeks of lecture, 3rd week study break, then two weeks for finals.
6 week winter break (Week of June 17th - Week of July 22nd)
Then second semester is the same as semester 1 (4weeks on, 1 week off). The last week of finals is the week of Nov 18th and then you are on summer break until February of 2014! 🙂
I ireally like the idea of study breaks to help avoid burnout if students actually use that time wisely to study and catchup instead of continuously falling behind.. i am very scareed about all of our grades being based largely on one final exam and maybe a midterm! but i have talked to an Australian professor who taught at my undergrad here in Wisconsin and he said that if you get like a 70 on an exam thats as good as a high b or a (depending onn the university). he said you start at 0 and get points as you get things right instead of the US, where you start at a 100 and get docked for wrong answers. He was from Adelaide I believe tho, so I will see how Murdoch works specifically soon enough!

Anyone else applying for Murdoch to start 2013 for the November 30th deadline? About how long does it take to hear back? I sent my application in over a week ago. Also, do they notify you if you are rejected/accepted by phone, email, or regular mail?
Have you heard back yet? I also applied for the Nov. 30th deadline and have not heard anything back yet. They will notify you by email and let you know either way. I also applied to Murdoch in 2010 and received a rejection email by the end of December. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that no news yet is good news 🙂 Best of luck!
I'm interested in applying for Murdoch for the Feb 2014 start date but I'm having some trouble finding info on the website. It took me a while to find everything with so many links, undergrad and postgrad jumbled together, and all the different terms they have for things (course=program?). Once I created an online account, I searched for the DVM course code, and it didn't come up in the search. And now I can't find a timeline for how everything should be done.
Stupid question, but how the heck does one apply to Murdoch as a US student? I feel like if I can't figure this out, maybe I shouldn't even consider being a vet...haha
If anyone has experience applying to Murdoch and would like to share, any help will be much appreciated!

Im not an international student so Im not much help in regards to explaining the application process and what to expect but I may be able to help with the course code. According to the website when applying online you must remember the course name Veterinary Science (BSc, BVMS) and course code B1058. You also need to remember the course is not a graduate degree like a DVM but is an undergraduate degree (bachelors qualification).
If you're having trouble I suggest you either ring them or make an online enquiry. The international offices phone number is +61 3 9627 4809 and the online enquiry form can be found here: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/Future-students/International-students/Contact-us/Make-an-enquiry/
Regarding dates and such I have written a previous post in this thread where I give the application deadlines for each cycle, there are 4 application cycles each year for entry into Semester 1 of the following year.

Ohh I thought it was D1061 Doctor of Veterinary Medical Science course. I already have my bachelors degree in animal science...don't know if that matters?
Calling might have to be a last resort kind of thing since I'm over here in the states and it will cost $$$. I'll try emailing. Thanks for your help!
Your bachelors in Animal Science will definitely exempt you from the "pre-vet" year that Australian students need to take straight out of highschool. It MAY also exclude you from certain classes during the program, but you will have to bring course descriptions and syllibi to prove that the courses you have taken satisfy the course requirements for Murdoch's Vet program. So theoretically you could skip out of a few classes, but sometimes not reccommended so that you stay on the same course schedule as everyone else in your year. If you do wish to try and get exempted from a few classes, I believe you will have to mark you are interested in advanced placement on your application. Even though Murdoch's Veterinary Science program is a dual bachelors degree it is AVMA accreditted meaning that it is equivalent to obtaining a DVM at a college in North America. On your scrubs you will put your name, BcS, BVMS you will NOT put your name, DVM because that is not the degree you actually obtained. In either case you are called Dr. in the clinic/field. American students still get US financial aid (and graduate level loans) since the degrees obtained both lead to veterinarians. Very simplified descriptions. Next, read through a lot of the Murdoch threads and you will find a LOT of good information on applying: make sure you look at the dates because some information is still relevant and others of the old ones are not so relevant. For Example, Murdoch used to allow students to start either semester 1 or semester 2 for the Vet program, but now only allow students to start at semester 1 all together. Semester one over there is also February and Semester 2 starts September. Also in one of the recent threads I explicitly explain step by step how to find and print a paper application to send in with the rest of your application materials (a 500 word personal statement, transcripts, references, and a CV/resume).
Things to read:
Read the website for the Bachelors of Veterinary Science and make sure you are under the international tab which is on the left side of page in a little yellow/tan box: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/Courses/Veterinary-Science/
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=756864
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=927626 (this link has the directions to print out application)
Read all that information thouroughly and if you still have questions let us know, but I think that covers a good basis!

Oh thanks for all the info!
But couldn't I just apply online instead of mailing everything in?

Yes you could apply online! I just wanted all my materials especially my official sealed transcripts and reference letters to be delivered all together in a nice bundle. That way they either got everything or nothing. Just my preference, so I wanted to put that option out there for others

Ohh that's a good idea...I haven't come across how to submit an "official" transcript or letters of rec...how do they know they're legit or not?

I didn't know how to make it official through the online application, so thats why I mailed everything in one envelope. My transcripts were sealed from the schools themselves and either had a signature over the seal or a stamp so it could not be tampered with. I asked the same of the people writing my references. They all sent me one copy to keep for myself and then a copy in an envelope sealed and a signature over the back. I don't know how they would know if its official if it is just scanned in and attached to the application... Email someone in admissions at Murdoch! They sometimes take a bit to respond though, its just their nature!
