I haven't seen anyone discuss MUSC. Does anyone have any info on the school besides the fact that it's in Charleston and the beaches are close by?? I need the "real deal," not the sugarcoated brochure version.

Are there any MUSC students out there? I need some feedback about the school before I make a decision.

Some questions I have:
-Do you think the new clinical facility will be open by 2008? Will all classes move there, or is it just for D3 and D4?
-Do you live in University Place Apts? How are they? Would you recommend it? Overall, how is the rent downtown?
-Are there any student organizations?
-How would you rate the faculty?
-Are there any externship opportunities?
-What is the retention rate? How many students graduate on time?
-How many students pass the boards?
-Patients: do you have to actively recruit patients, or does the school provide them? Are students in charge of billing, scheduling, etc?

Thanks!!

It looks like I'm the only one considering MUSC. I still haven't made a definite decision, although right now I'm leaning towards Howard. I was just looking at the academic calendar for MUSC, and I see that they recognize a "Confederate Memorial Day" 😱 😱 that is different from the actual Memorial Day.... do any other schools have this ridiculous holiday?

I'm thinking about MUSC too. It's just that I don't know the answers to your questions, I'm only applying. I mean, I liked what I saw. Although one faculty member told me he's thinking of switching things back to electric drills as opposed to air powered drills which is really weird. I don't know if he was just blabbering about how he likes the old drills better or if he was actually serious. Again, I'm just as curious as you are about the questions you posed.

I am working for a dentist who went to Howard and loved it. She did her pediatric residency at George Washington University. I interviewed at MUSC and I remember them saying that the clinic would be ready for this incoming class to use. But, they haven't broken ground on the new building yet and the funding still isn't in place. The new building will be where all the patients are seen, it will not be where the sim lab is or where classes are held. All classes and labs will remain in the current building. Charleston is definitely a very expensive place to live, but there are some inexpensive suburbs if you are willing to drive. Congratulations on being accepted to both! They are both great schools and will have a lot to offer.

I'm pretty sure they broke the ground for new clinical facilities. At least that's what my D4 friend at MUSC told me.

I specifically asked at my interview and they said no, they have not broken ground and the funding wasn't fully in place yet. But, my interview was in October and that could've changed.

When I interviewed in November, they still did not have enough funding and they had not broken ground. They have a real-time cam on their website for people to watch the construction. I checked it a few days ago, and it is literally a hole in the ground. I just talked to some D4 students, and they doubt it will be done in 2008.

All of the faculty at the school is confident that the building will be complete by 2008, so I don't doubt that it will. During my interview they made comments about how fortunate the upcoming class would be to use the new facilities.

and you know what? . . . it is an awesome school with or without the building. Definitely don't base your decision on that.

Actually they have broken ground as of August 11, 2006. I went to the groundbreaking but from what I've heard, yes the funding isn't there and the ground breaking was more or less a way to get more money to actually get the project of the ground. Dr. Edwards did put a shovel in the ground though. It's strange that during the interviews they are not recognizing their own groundbreaking....

I dont think the new building will be ready by 2008 and I think it will be used more by third and fourth years while first and second will still use the sim labs. I live downtown and it is reasonably safe. There are homeless people walking around, but within walking distance to the school. We pay 1600 total for a 3 bedroom place, 533 a piece. Enjoyed living on James Island last year better.
Not sure about the rest but almost everybody graduates unless of course you don't want to.
