I have interviews at both University of Minnesota and Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston on the same day, and can't decide which I should go to.

Anybody have any thoughts on either of these programs?

i heard many times over that Minnesota is an excellent program...unless you have a preference of living in South Carolina...which I'm sure isnt a bad program either....

i did an away at MUSC but know absolutely nothing about minnesota. i imagine it is cold though.
MUSC is a smaller program but all the residents seem happy and well trained. i think at least 3 of 4 residents over the last few years have gone on to fellowship. they have a new program director who is really nice and seems to really care about resident education. the full-time faculty is not very large but they all are great resident teachers. numbers seem pretty good and i think the clinical training is also. plus they have a built in intern year so you might be able to cancel all those ty interviews in late jan.
again, i love the city of charleston and wanted to spend 4 weeks there so i might be biased. and i am sure minnesota is excellent, even if chilly.

They are both good programs. Minneapolis is a great all around city. Charleston is nice too but not as metropolitan. Charleston has great weather all year round, and I recall that some residents even had boats.

Minnessota residents have 3 hospitals they cover, so there is a little driving but not more than 10 minutes or so between each facility (VA and County hospital). The Va and county provide a plethora of volume clinically and surgically. In fact, I believe that UNC sends its senior residents to Minnesota to boost surgical numbers because of the great volume of the Minnesota program.

One of my prior co-residents is currently doing a combined Peds/Plastics fellowship at MUSC while her husband does a Heme/Onc fellowship there. I have heard she is happy with her training there.

When I was interviewing for residency, residents seemed happy at both places. Personally, I liked Minnesota better and think it is the better program...but you wont go wrong either way.

Both UNC and Mayo sends their 3rd year residents to the University of Minnesota for surgical experience.
