Just cuz I'm bored/curious, what kind of music do you listen to while studying? My iTunes has a bunch of random stuff, but currently is playing Counting Blue Cars.
Also, only semi-related, are there any must-have songs on your music player of choice?
I don't listen to music while studying-- I like it too much and am easily distracted.
Must haves for me are Avenged Sevenfold, Dream Theater, System of A Down, and Pantera.
Props to the Dishwalla. Gotta love that 90s rock.
I also rarely listen to music while studying. I have a rather extensive music background and tend to spend too much time analyzing it and thinking about how much better I would have done it...heh.
I have been listening to stuff lately though...go figure. Mostly rock. Current Faves: new Smashing Pumpkins, Daughtry (old friend of mine...he's done good), CCR, U2, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More With Feeling Soundtrack, lots of other stuff...

I'm constantly downloading new music or getting some from friends because I prefer new things that I don't really know all the words to so I can't actually sing along. Newest one is Ingrid Michaelson, she's bluesy and I like it. 🙂 Other than that I basically like everything except for most country. Don't hate it, just don't care to listen to it.

Yeah, I love Ingrid Michaelson right now, the only problem is the radio is over playing her song so in a week or so I'll hate her

That's why I avoid the radio and listen to things they're not playing. 😉
Plus the radio stations around here suck so I don't have much of a choice. 🙁

I basically only listen to music on the radio, but I do love Ingrid Michaelson's style and voice!!! Sometimes I listen to classical while I study, but nothing with words.
Must haves would be Goo Goo Dolls, the Counting Crows, and Dispatch.

yeah I can't listen to anything with words while I'm studying. I'm really in to Paul Potts right now too, I think because his story is so great, plus he is incredibly gifted

love goo goo, just down loaded there 'greatest hits' from i tunes, also love Rob Thomas and Match Box 20 and Chris Daughtery
Oooh, I love the Counting Crows too. I just think he is an amazing lyricist and picks great songs to cover too. I think the lead singer of Cake is an amazing lyricist too. My favorite bands are Blue October, I think I've seen them live at least once per year since 2000, Sublime, and Rancid. I also like to listen to Buckcherry, Candlebox, and Metallica a lot. I've been listening to Everclear a lot again lately too. But I'll listen to just about anything.
I should listen to music without words (occasionally I do) but my favorites right now are Alter Bridge and Sixx AM. Their two albums (Blackbird and The Heroin Diaries, respectively) are two of the best rock albums I've heard in a long, long time - simply amazing

My fav counting crow song is round here...love that song....

My favorite is Omaha, by default. Actually I think I like every song they've ever done but I love A Long December (just beautiful), Mrs. Potter's Lullaby, Friend of the Devil (I didn't know this was a cover for the longest time), and of course Mr Jones. Oh, that dude just amazes me!

When I first heard "Round Here" I got goosebumps. If I had to pick one song by the CC's though, it would have to be "Mr. Jones."
For the GGD, it would have to be "Iris" with "Broadway" in a close second.
Two years ago I saw both in concert, together. Goo Goo Dolls opened, just after their Let Love In album debuted. Amazing show. However, I was a bit disappointed by the CC's. They didn't perform "Round Here" or "Mr. Jones." They did perform "Hangin' Around" as an encore though.

I love iris, but my favorite one is the new one they did for the Transfomers movie
I can't study without music, and headphones are a must because otherwise i'm easily distracted. I can pretty much listen to anything, as long as its not too new to me (because then I actually have to pay attention to it). Generally I stick to my indie/coffeehouse rock, but occasionally i jump around to more hardcore stuff if i'm trying to stay awake.
thank goodness my undergraduate school had an honor code, so i could shut myself in a room and listen to music while i took tests. (remember psych, you have a better recall under the same conditions). i guess it worked out!

Not to continue on, but I can still get goose bumps listening to their music after millions of times. The lyrics to Mr Jones can still leave me in awe after a decade or whatever. I know, I'm a freak. This is the same with Blue October for me too.
I love Paul Potts!! I still watch his opening number on the X factor and get chills!yeah I can't listen to anything with words while I'm studying. I'm really in to Paul Potts right now too, I think because his story is so great, plus he is incredibly gifted

I usually need some sort of general background noise, can't stand a completely silent library. So usually it's at a coffee house with ear plugs or headphones listening to classical music real soft. Just enough to drown out conversations, but still have some sort of noise going on. I use the in-the-ear-canal type of headphones so they do a good job of keeping a lot of noise out so I can keep the volume pretty low.
Will listen to really anything instrumental (jazz, classical, etc...) just can't have words or be something I'm very familiar with or else I just listen to it.

Right now it's Wolfmother, Radiohead, Death Cab, and a bit of Fiest when I need something happy-go-lucky. But really its anything that keeps me going. While studying, though, it has to be soft or classical. Otherwise, I begin to contemplate life's mysteries.

I usually find it harder to study with music that have lyrics, one thing that I've also found that also works besides instrumental is music in languages that I don't understand, or at least don't know well enough to keep up. Have quite a few songs in Spanish, some Hungarian, some Japanese, one Romanian (i think...), a couple others in languages I don't think I can identify. I like that music is rather universal.
Does that work with anyone else?
Although regardless of language, if the song's got an awesome rhythm then I get up and dance around to it.
I figure its a good break for the mind, as well as good for the soul.

Have you tried listening to radio stations via the internet? Give Star 94.1 San Diego a try. It can/does overkill certain songs, but at the same time maybe a radio station from a different region will be refreshing? I change my listening all up and down CA. Should probably expand out of state.
Anyone with suggestions? (must have internet listening, Im not willing to road trip just for radio, at least until gas prices come down. sorry 😛 )

Sigur Ros?? Wow. Someone sent me a link to one of their music videos once, and I thought it was awesome. Never looked further at their stuff though, and haven't heard about them since. Kind of awesome to see their name again. I guess I should check them out.

I mostly listen to rock. Taproot, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Evans Blue, and Submersed are some really good ones! 😀
I tend to listen to music if I'm doing a written assignment, working on the computer, or walking between class. If I'm trying to read something from a textbook or a journal I'll usually not listen to anything- I tend to retain it better that way.
Favorite bands include Guster, Collective Soul, Snow Patrol, Incubus, and Breaking Benjamin, among others.

I can't listen to music while I study because I start analyzing and listening closely to the music rather than focusing on my studies. But I spend a lot of time with music; both in school (music was my major) and in my free time.
What!!! Nobody mentioned Me First and the Gimme Gimmes!!! 😱 There is something in them for everybody. They are a punk cover band but are all part of popular bands in their own right ie.. NOFX, Swinging Utters, Foofighters and Lagwagon. Another favorite is Bare Naked Ladies I like the mellow groove and mixed with the energy they give off. Also Beastie Boys and a lot of Ska or Punk like Mad Caddies, Zebrahead, Five Iron Frenzy, The Hippos, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Bowling for Soup though they get overplayed alot.
So If you haven't heard of Me Fisrt and the Gimme Gimmes check them out they are alot of fun. If you like Country they have a cover for that 80's 70's and 60's Yep a show tunes album and even have ruined Johnny's Bar Mitzfah.
Keep on Rockin in the Free world.

I really Me First and the Gimme Gimmes also as well as NoFX. I really like the Transplants and Rage Against the Machine. I just started getting into MC5 which are awesome. I also love Red Hot Chili Peppers and some of the classics like Gn'R and Aerosmith. I have to listen to loud, fast music while I am studying or else I will fall asleep.

Sigur Ros makes me sleeeeeeeepy. Really sleepy. I like them for that...very relaxing...I'm getting tired just talking about it!

Joanna Newsom - Ys.
I don't think many people would appreciate her, but I do, and it's the perfect study music for me.
That and MBV, Serena Maneesh, Sigur Ros, Bolero, Rites of Spring and Penderecki.
Joanna = 😍😍😍
At PSU when they did the free napster subscriptions (and was using a pc) I just streamed lots of classical.
Now, what I listen to on a regular basis completely changes by mood. John Butler is almost always in the mix. I have well over 50 gigs of music. It ranges from classical, opera and musicals to hardcore/metal to underground hiphop and back.
I listen to this song a lot, but it is because I started learning it on guitar....and it is hard to find truly talented people in the music world lately. Sorry, most of the groups we listen to just are not very skilled musicians and can get by with about a 10 chord repertoire, cheesy lyrics, and the designated looks for the genre of music. (I did say we....I listen to it too) Oh, and for you guitarists out there, he plays this in open C, so a lot of the stuff isn't quite as crazy as it seems. Although he does get insanely loud hammer ons....maybe I should install a pickup to get that sound.

I like mongrain too, but they are radically different styles. One thing, John's main focus is on the 11 string (he rips off that octave G). Erik kind of specializes in the tapping..although he is a very good fingerstyle/strummer player as well. I've seen his normal 6 string, and while it is good..it isn't spectacular. Better than me, but that isn't saying much. I still want his Rainsong guitar though. John isn't really doing tapping FOR the song as much as part of the song...also slightly tougher when you're hitting the strings at once. For a song like air tap, at least he can throw on some heavier strings and add mass to those high strings...getting it a little louder, in addition to the insanely high near lapsteel level action on the guitars for tapping. If you saw August Rush, all that tapping was done by a girl by the name of Kaki King. If I wanted to listen to crazy talented or hard acoustic stuff then I'd probably wind up with Tommy Emmaneul, Andy McKee, Michael Hedges, Leo Kottke etc. I use a 12 string as my main instrument lately though, and I am a huge fan of open tunings, bottle neck, AND drumming. All of which John incorporates (Leo does too). If you want to check out some pretty cool slide on an 11 string, then betterman or pickapart is up there with the good groove.

Also, John's band is insanely talented...makes him sound better usually. I wish I could half hang with their drummer. (I play drums too...although not much lately) The band in the second video of pickapart is not his current band. There is a reason it is John Butler Trio...he tends to sub in new guys, although the last 2 albums I don't think he has.
Oh, and as an aside. If any of you like acoustic stuff then I highly recommend you look up all those people mentioned in addition to Erik Mongrain as posted above. I can probably list off 10 or 15 others, but I'm lazy...if you really want to know then PM me and I'll tell you. I doubt many of you give a damn though.
