I had a couple of questions for anyone who is already at MWU-CPG.

1. It looks like they make your schedule for you, but I wondered about specific times for classes. Do you get the official schedule at orientation?

2. Did any of you try to get more financial aid than what is given? For example, did you try to get more of the loan subsidized? I hope that I am explaining it right. I don't mean that I want to borrow more money than tuition/books, just a better loan.

3. When looking at past schedules, it looks like they schedule a time each week for group work. Is that true or do you schedule times at night or on the weekend to meet?

4. For any of you with children, how do you budget your time? Are there times during the day when you can study or do you only study after your kids go to bed?

5. Is there a fitness center on campus? Or is there a running club that runs in the morning (or some other time during the day)?

Thanks!

If I remember correctly, the schedule is given to you during orientation. It might have been passed out, or it might have been put into the mailbox you're assigned. Sorry, but it's been a couple of years.

It's my understanding that the government decides that you're only allowed so much in subsidized loans ($8500 a year?) the rest must be unsubsidized and then private loans.

My class had to schedule times outside of the block schedule for meetings. There's a new dean and so I don't know if things have changed.

4. For any of you with children, how do you budget your time? Are there times during the day when you can study or do you only study after your kids go to bed?

Sorry....no kids for me.

There is a basic fitness "center" (it's a room) that is free to students. I don't know if there is a running club, but a few (future) classmates may form an unofficial club.

There are a few people here that are PS2s and PS1 who might have better answers. I just didn't want to leave you hanging while they're in class. 😛

Thanks ForgetMeNot!

Also, I wondered about dress code. The dean mentioned something about making it more professional.

Guess that means no more short, short skirts or super low cut shirts!

And yes, I saw them throughout the curriculum. 😱

You can check the registrar's site for schedules. Some are posted earlier than others (this past quarter's I think we got officially 2 weeks before the previous quarter ended. Kind of frustrating.

2. Did any of you try to get more financial aid than what is given? For example, did you try to get more of the loan subsidized? I hope that I am explaining it right. I don't mean that I want to borrow more money than tuition/books, just a better loan.

The amount of subsidized loan you can receive is capped by the government at $8500. Everything else is unsubsidized to a certain limit (and I can't remember what that is).

3. When looking at past schedules, it looks like they schedule a time each week for group work. Is that true or do you schedule times at night or on the weekend to meet?

There are blocks in the schedule set aside for things such as group meetings. Sometimes those scheduled times are sufficient and other times it's not. At least during our first year, you don't need to meet every week, just when necessary for a project.

4. For any of you with children, how do you budget your time? Are there times during the day when you can study or do you only study after your kids go to bed?

I don't have children, but yes there are times during the day at school when you can study. Some quarters have more breaks in time than others, but lunch is over an hour and you can squeeze some studying in there. And then there's always during Interdisciplinary, Service Learning, or APC 🙂 J/K

5. Is there a fitness center on campus? Or is there a running club that runs in the morning (or some other time during the day)?

Yes there is a fitness center, although I can't tell you how big or good it is.

We've heard the rumor, but nothing official yet. Unfortunately you always have people who take advantage of a casual dress code and ruin it for everyone else. I would not be surprised with our new Dean if she tried to mandate a professional dress code. The only bump in the road I could see is the fact that the other colleges within the school do not have such a policy....

I got the feeling that it did not matter what the others were doing. Pharmacy did not mingle too much with the other programs (except some of the biomedical people), so I don't know how much the fact that the other programs do not mandate professional dress would impact the decision of the dean.

We actually had a Immunology with DO and Pod this year. No we don't intermingle much, but I think since the majority of the school is a professional school, it'll be difficult trying to have one college have different rules than another. SO I think it's going to end up being an all or none.

I hope they give us a dresscode because Pharmaz shows far too much cleavage, and it makes me a bit uncomfortable.

I stay at school and get it all done before I go home. I don't get anything done once I get home. We usually get out at 3-5, so I will stay until about 7 and get done what is needed. I stay later nights before tests, but it has been working for me.

And as far as the group work, first year it isn't bad at all. I believe we will get more projects in the future, and we have 3 this qtr. None should take too much time outside of class. I have a pretty good group though, so if you get a crappy one I guess it could be much worse. You don't have to meet each week, but once project is close to due, you will probably have to meet a couple times the week of or so.

Congrats on getting in this year, and we will see you around Cholla.

Does it give you the same funny feeling as the CPR dummies?

What is wrong with the CPR dummies? I took that class all 4 times. They are great!

Yeah, I overheard the instructor complaining that he had to keep reminding you that there's no tongue use in CPR.

Yeah, well, you are definately not supposed to use the organ that you were sticking in your dummies mouth.
