For the last couple of days, I've read postings...I mean A LOT(I spent whole day logging in and out and watching ravens and saints games...)from current students at these schools not only to compare their programs but to get an idea as to campus life, housing options and costs, cultural environment around the city, people, child education, life after graduation(whether many outstaters love to stay in the area or move out for any specific reason not limited to personal reasons) and etc....
I really enjoyed reading the postings and can't wait to meet them in person. I've been accepted to MWU glendale and two other schools and will have an interview at USN.
I'm 32 with a lovely wife...no baby yet...I think we've already lost a timing😀
This would be my 2nd career and I never imagined even a month ago that I would have made this far. I have to say thank you all sdners for your thoughtful advices.

Back to my concerns...besides the school programs, IMO,the environment and cultural aspects of the city where the school is located at are also important criterion choosing the best fitting school.
For those who are attending or attended the schools, (jeddevil, rxforlife2004, forgetmenot, amandarxs, smilescali, jdpharmd, lord999......)can you give some more inputs on the following inquiries?
I think I did enough research on the school programs and have some questions that might be very important making my decision.

* MWU: on campus housing would be a bad idea for my family concerning noise and disturbance if any?
* After graduation, do many out of state students get jobs there and stay with their families albeit they can opt out? I'm asking this b/c I would like to settle down after graduation.
* how's the job market for both retail and clinical?
* For prospective hospital pharmacist, which school setting is better? e.g. One stresses clinics over the other in their curriculum?
* USN: is the city diversified in terms of industry such as medicine, public health, education, and pharmaceutics or more like casino oriented so many people you actually meet and talk to have jobs related to hotel and casino?
* USN: annual living expenses including tuition and fees?

any thought would be greatly appreciated...

actually on campus housing is a great plus for many. from what i've heard, it's very quiet and reasonably priced. i think you will like it.

the education here at mwu-cpg is great. the teachers are here to help you learn and most of my classmates here are very mature and in fact pretty cool when you get to know them.

retail here is hot right now. the starting wage at cvs for a entry level pharmacist is 114k.

forph,
congrats on mwu-cpg.
how long did it take for them to notify you afer the interview?
yeah, it's a tough decision.
University of Southern Nevada vs. Midwestern CPG
both are 3 year programs which is good for you since you are 32, have a family, and this is your second career.
if you're a gambler, then USN would be your choice.
if you like hot desert weather, then MWU CPG is the choice.
i've been to MWU-CPG but not USN yet. So far, I was impressed though.
I suggest you wait after USN interview before you make the choice.

That sounds great...I'll give it a try then when I choose housing. I was asking b/c I had read some negtive feedbacks on campus housing.
Thanks for your input blueclassring. People I met there were really nice and that's exactly what I felt when I was there.

I was there on 12/19 and found I was in from "interact now" on 1/10. I haven't received any packet yet. I need a break anyway since I've spent $$$ on flying sleeping and driving for many interview trips since last Nov. you know what I mean...😉

Hi forph,

As you know both schools are great 3 year programs, but USN has the block system while MWU has a more traditional schedule. I really enjoy the block system, but it really depends on your learning style.

USN is not located in Las Vegas. Even though Henderson is close to Vegas, the feel for the town is night and day from that of the "Strip". Henderson was ranked 20 in Money Magazines best places to live. http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2006/snapshots/PL3231900.html
However, I have always liked the Las Vegas Strip and love that it is just minutes away!

I really enjoy living here in Henderson. It seems much more relaxed and family orientated than California (where I moved from). There are a lot new shopping centers and many large GREEN parks for sports and the kids. I live in Green Valley, which is part of Henderson, and really enjoy my neighborhood. My son goes to a great school and loves to attend enrichment activities at the Henderson Multigenerational Center http://www.cityofhenderson.com/parks/facilities/HMGC/php/Multigen.php

My husband and I would probably stay here, but he is a Cali native and misses the ocean and of course his family. Even though he LOVES the fact that there is no state income tax here in NV.

The Las Vegas area is booming and is building new hospitals (St. Rose). Our school has many clinical faculty members that are affiliated with UMC (University Medical Center). I would say that USN stresses clinical pharmacy and they are always reminding students of the importance of completing residencies upon graduation. I think the majority of pharmacy schools do this,🙂 The market is strong in retail as well.

USN doesn't have campus housing so you would have to get a place in Henderson. Many students rent apartments that are fairly close to school.

I would say when you come to your interview at USN, try to drive around Henderson (not just the immediate area around the school!) and try to get a feel for the area. You can drive to St Rose hospital on Eastern and St Rose Parkway to check that out as well.

Good luck with your decision:luck:

Smilescali,
Thank you so much for such a detailed information. It would be a tough decision if I have to choose between the two. sigh~🙂

Can I ask you some questions about your sch? I have been hoping to get a students perspective on the school (USN) if it is ok with you I can email you or you can email me at [email protected] . Please if you do not mind me asking some questions. Thanks
