I am currently deciding between these two schools. I am on the waiting list at ASDOH and have an interview coming up at UOP and would prefer either one of those schools over these two but until I get more info from the others, I was hoping to get some opinions from you guys. I am leaning towards Midwestern because while they have the block curriculum (very similar to Roseman) I think that the clinic at Midwestern is a little bit more known. I say this because Midwestern in IL has a very well known DO school so I figure they will have an easier time getting patients for their dental clinic. Price wise they are both very close. My main concern is the clnical experience. What do you guys think?

there are at least 1 thread about this and it is pretty recent... seearch it. MWU is modeled after AZ so its gonna be good

can't find those threads. I know the schools is MODELED after MW-AZ but they are not the same and MW-IL hasn't been around as long so that's why I started this thread. Would love some opinions on this.

MWUAZ is 5 years old, MWUIL and Roseman are the same age. If you have specific questions about Roseman and to a lesser extent, MWUAZ, feel free to PM me.

My biggest concern is which school is going to have the best clinical experience with a consistent patient pool.

I live in Salt Lake and it is way over saturated with dentists. There are also 2 dental schools in Salt Lake. Due to these factors as well as some others I don't think the clinic at Roseman will be full for a long time. I don't know too much about Midwestern IL but I interviewed at AZ and was super impressed with what they have.

There is no doubt that there are a lot of dentists in the area. That said, we're doing very well with the low income population that needs care. Also, while there are two dental schools now in SLC, the U will not have a clinic ran by dental students for two years from this August and their class size is currently only 20.

Really? No more opinions on this huh?

I got accepted to both Roseman and MWU-IL and I am attending MWU-IL right now.

Roseman has the better curriculum and facilities, even though both are pretty new. Roseman has a lot of fantastic faculty members and they strive to form connections with the students. At MWU, we have good faculty with great experience but that's as far as I'll take it. Roseman wants to establish life-long colleagues but I don't get that experience here. There is a bigger connection between administration and students at Roseman than MWU.
I think the first class at Roseman took the boards and pass rate was really good, but the first class here will be taking the boards in a couple of months. MWU had a prep class, and is providing a lot of time for the students to study for the boards so I think they'll do okay.

Roseman already has their clinics opened but here it will be open after a couple of months, patient flow will be slow in the beginning but should be busy after a few months.
Utah has cheaper cost of living.
Both good schools but very expensive. Look at the cost difference.

Good luck

I attend Roseman currently as a D2. The goal at Roseman is to produce great clinicians. Our school is set up a lot like UoP in that sense. (We have Dr's and Deans that either went to school or worked there). We take our boards after the first year(everyone but 1 passed on their first attempt) so that we can focus on clinical skills, lab work and seeing patients in our D2 year. The book work load is much less this year than in our first because of this. Our clinic has been open for about a month now and we are extremely busy. I myself am booked out until April. For the most part we are screening patients, doing cleanings, perio and treatment plans. Many of us have also done simple extractions and fillings with more invasive procedures being scheduled for April. I've spoken with several of my friends at other schools our class has done the same, and in most cases more clinically than them. We also dont have specialty programs at our school yet so we will be able to do things that would normally be reserved for students in residency programs. I am very pleased with my education here and the way things are progressing clinically. Yes SLC has a lot of dentist but so do most cities. We have no and will not have any problems filling chairs at our school. The multiple hygiene clinics in the area all refer their patients to us and so do a lot of dentists who have patients that cant afford to be treated in their practice.

Cant say too much about Midwestern IL because I dont know much about it. If its anything like Midwestern AZ I am sure it is a great school as well.

Another thing I'm kind of considering is tuition and living costs. At Roseman they handed out a sheet saying it could be around $420,000. At MWU-IL there was a more vague sheet. Anyone know how much it could be at MWU-IL?

Hey I'm in the same boat, have you made any decisions yet?

Thanks Jeff, was there a particular reason he chose Roseman over MWU-IL?

I think for me, once I realized that the clinic at Roseman was doing well it was a pretty easy decision. Roseman seems like a very special place. From the philosophy of the school which brings students together to the curriculum which gives students more free time, Roseman seems like a school that will produce great dentists.

There were a lot of mixed reviews on how the clinic might turn out at MWU-IL and I figured at the very worst, they would be about the same. On top of that, Roseman is modeled after UOP in a lot of ways. The dean is from there and many of the professors are from there. If I don't end up getting into UOP, I feel like I will get a comparable education at Roseman. Distance to home also played a factor for me. I'm from CA so the flight home would be easier and taking my car to Utah would be easier too.

Thanks a lot Samdig. I am actually leaning towards Roseman for the same reasons. It sounds like we are in really similar situations. I'm from Ca and am waiting to hear if I get into UOP too. Have you interviewed at UOP already?

My interview is on April 4th, what about you?

Just thought I'd chime in here. I am a D1 at Roseman and am completely happy with my decision to attend. I honestly can't imagine going to dental school any other way. The way the curriculum is set up and the atmosphere for learning which it promotes is something really valuable. I haven't heard any regrets from any of my classmates who are attending and I am impressed with how well things are running for the school only being open 2 years. Granted there are some hiccups but nothing that comes even close to being upsetting, and rarely are there ones that are even inconvenient.

Thanks Tyrangiel! I think you just solidified my decision to choose Roseman.
