Hey all....I haven't posted in a while....

Here's my situation....August 1999, my MCAT scores sucked. August 2000 I improved, especially on verbal (6 to 9)...not stellar, but good enough for me to get one interview/waitlist for the 2002 entering class....( I thought a 9 on verbal was pretty decent)

Nonetheless, that school rejected me, so I think...ok, definitely gonna reapply for 2004 (Nothing much had changed in a few months time, or else I'd feel confident applying for 2003). I thought that I'd retake the MCAT in April 2003, hoping that I would have great scores instead of decent ones...(I worked much harder)

Then....**sigh**I get a 5 on verbal!!! 🙁 Now that I'm applying to med school for 2004, I feel miserable that my old (better) scores won't fly (MCATs cannot be older than April 2001).

Anyone know of any med schools that would take Aug 2000 scores?? Am I a hopeless case?? (btw, if u should ask, the GPA is mediocre, but I have a lot of valuable experiences, and some good LORs)

MCAT for the FOURTH time!!??

I'd ask a prehealth advisor. Do something drastic. Get a masters in public health (something humanitarian) and take an MCAT class so you score higher. If you have to study and practice for 6 months straight, do it.

Also, decide when you're willing to call it quits. You never have to, though. Reevaluate why you're doing this. If it's to help people, you don't need to have an M.D.

I really think you would be best off if you retook the MCAT. If you were able to get a 9 on verbal 3 years ago, than you should be able to study for and achieve a good score (like another 9).

I think this is probably your best chance as well, but it has to suck to take the MCAT 4 times. I heard that some schools will accept MCAT scores from 4-5 years ago, but that's just a rumor - I never looked anything up to substantiate it. Try looking at schools' websites or the MSAR.

Don't you need special permission and special circumstances to take the MCAT more than 3x?

You just need to show that you're still trying to apply to med school - all Cafepinay would need is to show them a rejection letter from a medical school.

I agree w/ the above posts - you're going to have to take the MCAT again. And MPH/MS is probably a good idea too, especially if your GPA isn't that hot. Best of luck.... hang in there; it's a sucky process.

This is really sad. 9->5 in verbal is difficult to explain. However, you can try DO schools. You will still be a doctor, but without a MD in your title.

There are some schools that their cut off is 2000 for people applying this year. I can't remember off hand which ones though. Mine is from 2001 and I thought this was the last year I could apply, but I saw some schools would accept 2001 for next year, so there are some schools.

Now, I can't remember if they are DO or MD

Verbal is highly emphasized by the UCs, so it might be to your advantage to take it just one more time. What really helped me for verbal was simply reading journal articles and TIME magazine every week. Two good science sections doesn't equilibrate for a 6 in verbal. You need to get that verbal to at least a 9 in order to be competitive in Cali. Best wishes!

Mt. Sinai says: "We will consider scores back to and including those from MCATs taken in 1999."
