I just got my mcat score (Sept 7th)

PS 11
BS 11
CR 8
WR N

TOTAL 30N

GPA 3.18 SCI GPA 3.03

a) What is my chance to get into SGU?

b) Is there any medical school in the states that I may have a chance?

c) Which US medical school has the highest acceptance rate? (just out of Curiosity)

I'll be happy to get into SGU but just wanna give a try in the states. Help me out plz. :luck:

Don't think you'd have much of a chance at an allopathic school in the states. However mid-/lower-tier D.O. schools would probably consider you if you could get a letter of recommendation from a practicing D.O. you shadow.

I would think you'd be safe at SGU, certainly for January if not August. I don't know which school has the highest acceptance rates (I would guess a state school in the Midwest maybe??). I think the MSAR from the link below might include that info, but it's been so long since I looked at it that I'm not sure. https://services.aamc.org/Publications/index.cfm?fuseaction=Product.displayForm&prd_id=186&prv_id=226

G'luck

I got into good allopathic US school w/ a 30 and a 3.8 without any research/shadowing/etc.
Your best chance is Texas, where I go to school. We have a lot of schools, with a lot of spots. My school just recently increased enrollment to 225 per year or something. I would say there are almost 1000 spots in Texas STATE schools (not including baylor or TCOM the osteopathic school), so with those scores and a good resume you stand some kind of chance (I have classmates with much lower MCAT scores and maybe slightly higher GPAS) You would, however, have to gain Texas residency by living here for two years.
Otherwise DO schools are a great alternative, and I think maybe the best one. You are competitive for them for sure. I can honestly say as a fourth year med student looking back and going into Internal Medicine, that becoming a DO is a great path, and in no way inferior to MD's.
So, MD > DO (in terms of placement into hypercompetitive specialties like rads, derm, ortho, etc.) >>> AUC, Ross, St.G's >>> everything else

SGU and AUC are the two Caribbean schools that posts the typical GPAs and MCATs of incoming students, you can go on the website to take a look at it. Realistically, with your MCAT you should consider DO schools before making the plunge to go overseas for your education.

His GPA is too low for Allopathic programs in the US.

I am going to ask a question in all sincerity, there is no defensive/offensive nature to this question: Why did you say "making the plunge to go overseas for your education"? Is SGU's quality of MD education lower than that of the DO education in the States? I ask because I am considering an application to SGU.

If one goes to SGU and scores better on their boards than a D.O. and the two are competing for a residency spot, will it go to the DO? Can this hypothetical question even be meaningfully posed?

I think you have a decent chance. I was accepted to several DO schools and St. Eustatius, SGU, St. James, Spartan, MUA so far with stats of:

MCAT: 29S
Overall GPA: 3.41
Science GPA: 3.8
Bio/Hist double major

I think you have a good chance. And if you really want to get into an Allopathic school rather than suffering the shame of an osteopathic school, apply to the well established, but realistic carib MD schools. Beware that SGU accepts 600 students, and the attrition rate is something to keep into consideration.

Your basic sciences isn't bad, which will be indicative of your performance in the first two years of medical school, whatever it will be.

Good luck on your endeavors.

Thanks all of you for your sincere answers. I have a question.

Do SGU accept 600 students every semester or is it spring and fall combined? Cos 600 for each semester seems too much. :luck:

It is 500-600 per semester including the UK class.

Everyone is on the island in year 2 so the uk class counts.

Thats insane. Every semester. Thats unrealistic, if I were you, OP, I'd look for well established MD schools in the carib that has a realistic matriculating number. 50 or 60 is fine. Better teacher-to-student interaction. Well as a student that goes to a small private liberal arts college, Im used to the strong student to teacher interaction where the ratio is around 14:1.
But whatever floats your boat. Good luck. 👍

Wow thatz double the amount Ross accepts for January/May although September semester is around 400. I would have guessed that AUC would have the most # of students since its the nicest island to go to but its surprising to see SGU outnumbering Ross.

The part that boggles the mind is that SGU and Ross interview everybody and accept 300-600 people per term, but AUC only interviews certain people and the largest class at AUC is about 180 in fall. The rest are under 100.

Obviously SGU has the infrastructure to handle more students, seeing that it is more than just a medical school, but I would personally not feel 'the love' in a class of 300-400.😍

Saba has small class sizes compared to other Caribbean schools.

My feelings exactly.

If you want the MD, I think you have a pretty good chance of getting into SGU. You could also get into the other top Caribbean schools, like Ross, AUC, or Saba. But if you want to go to med school in the states, with your GPA, I don't think you have much of a chance at a US allopathic school. But I'm sure you could probably get into one of the DO schools with those stats.
Good luck. :luck:

The OP would be better off going to DO school than one in the Caribbean. Despite the DO acronym, there are many advantages of being a DO over an IMG.
