Hello,

I want to apply for Pediatrics in the States. I am an IMG. My stats are Step1: 210, Step 2: 209, Step 2 CS: pass second attempt. I have research and publications, extracurricular activities, 4 weeks Peds elective in the States and 4 weeks in Canada. All my LOR are from Pediatricians from these electives. What are my chances? I will apply broadly to all community and university programs, but what are the chances of getting into a university program? Any suggestions to improve my application are welcome too. Thanks.

It may be difficult to get into a university program. What are you doing now? Are you a medical student?

I am graduating this year and hoping to get a job in Pediatrics research.

Anyone? Any advice, comments, suggestions? What are some of the good Peds community programs?

You need to make the most out of this year. Having more clinical experiences in the US this year may be helpful. This can allow you to also get a US letter from this year, but you'll probably have to act quickly. Does your school provide any assistance or guidance in this? There are plenty of good community peds programs throughout the country- is there a certain area you are looking at? You're low scores and a CS failure will obviously work against you, but you now have to do your best to overcome that. Based on the info you've provided, I'm guessing you will need a visa. You need to determine which programs offer visas. There's a lot to consider. Make sure you apply broadly, apply on time, and make sure you have the best PS and LORs as possible.

Thanks. Is there a list of good community Peds programs? I dont mind where it is in the country and will be applying broadly. If you dont know where I can find a list, maybe if you could give me an example of a few, I could get a better idea.
Thanks again.

I'm going to echo what Bean said and recommend that you make sure you apply on time.

I agree you face an uphill battle on getting into a university program, though there's no harm in trying. I might ask the peds program director at whatever place you are working for research this year what their thoughts are regarding the strength of nearby community programs.

Based on the NRMP data, research for paeds doesn't appear to have an impact. The application is probably riding hugely on Step scores, LoRs and how you come across in your essay and in person. Your Step scores are low (I'm just being honest) but not that far below the paeds match average (low-220s IIRC); my guess is you'll match somewhere with those scores though.
