Hey guys i just took my DAT's and did very poorly. Here are my scores:

Bio 18
Che 18
Orgo 17
RC 17 got the piano passage 🙁
QR 16 (ran out of time)
Pat 17
TS: 17
AA: 17

My overall gpa is a 3.7 and science is 3.6. I have good extracurriculars and shadowing, volunteering, clubs, summer dental program. I plan on applying to about 20 schools. I know i should retake, but i can only retake at end of july. Will be late in the cycle and do you think i can get any acceptances with these dat scores??

I dunno what to say. If your aiming at 20 schools, its a gamble, and I'll bet you will land at least 1 acceptance....but then again, its easy for me to say this since Im not in your shoes.

Retake is the smarter option IMO. You should still apply early June. I dunno if you should include in AADSAS that you will be retaking because, they might hold ur application until your new scores arrive, and if they do that, its like applying in August.

I vote for retake. July is still early in the application process. Just get the rest of your application in June.

17 is very sketchy, so you should retake

but that is not to say (as mentioned by the above posters) that you should not apply/submit your application as soon as possible when AADSAS first opens.

Are you a URM? ..if not, its an absolute retake. Your gpa becomes irrelevant if you cant score within the range of DAT scores most schools accept. 18 is pushing it alot, but if the rest of your app is amazing, then you MIGHT have a shot. But i think a 17AA does not stand a chance IMO. DEFF retake, how did you study for it?

thanks for ur replies. I self studied with my regular semester classes, so i was doing a little bit of everything, and didn't fully dedicate to the DAT. I will apply early but should i let them know that i will be retaking? Like dentalworks said, I don't want them to hold my application waiting for the new scores.

no one can be certain how they'll behave. this is more of a your-call kinda thing.

You definitely need to retake. Your GPA's are nice though. I took my DAT late July last year, landed two pre-December interviews and was recently accepted into dental school.

You still have a chance this upcoming cycle and three more months of studying should land you an awesome score. Definitely let the schools know you are retaking, you don't want schools automatically rejecting you for your low DAT scores. Good luck.

thanks again, i really appreciate it! I will start studying for the dats again in mid-june and take it end of july. I felt like i did a good amount of studying though, i watched chad's chem and orgo videos a couple of times. I went over barrons bio like three times. I did destroyer twice, i took random CDP tests, i took the practice oat and topscore and also achiever. I just think i didn't fully concentrate while studying. So if i start studying again what should i add to my list? any other good sources out there? I feel like i need some new studying materials. Kaplan is way too expensive for me. So if i get a decent score, around 19aa and ts, will i have a chance for pre-december interviews?

I think I remember you from like a month ago. You studied alot for the DAT but never continuously (right?)... like you were on and off and thats problematic cause, you start to forget material you studied in the first couple months. This is why I always advice people to squeeze their entire DAT preparation inside a 2 month period (very intense), after that, the average person's memory starts to forget material from the first few weeks.

If you can swing a 19AA/19TS by late July, you are an ideal candidate. Will it be enough for pre-dec interviews? :xf::xf::xf::xf:

Just remember, late July DAT = mid August official score report (it takes aadsas about 2-4 weeks until they receive your official scores)

+1
So yes let them know you are retaking. Plus, a complete application in mid august will be way ahead of where I was at. My last LOR wasnt submitted until the first week of Sept last year and I was still able to get an october interview. With better DAT scores you will have a good chance for multiple interviews.

yes i posted a couple of weeks ago about my status. I was juggling so many things at once that i just wanted to be over with the dat but i guess not. Hopefully with a full month of studying in the summer i'll be able to get at least a 19aa and ts. And yes i will let schools know about the retake and hopefully land some pre-dec interviews.

Also, I forgot to mention that after you take your DAT, call up all of the schools you are applying to and ask them if they accept the unofficial DAT score report via fax (although they will still need to receive your official DAT score report but this takes much longer for them to receive). This is what I did which sped up my application process.

And try to submit your application in June. From what I remember, I think I submitted mine around the 3rd week of June.
