Hi... New to the site... Im a third med student in a DO school... I am wondering what my chances of getting into a program are?
My scores are 218/88 on usmle step 1
and 555 on comlex...
I know my comlex score is not very good and do not plan on showing it to md programs... my class rank is somewhere in the top 30 percentile...
Im looking into FL, IL and last choice would me Michigan prog... where do I have a legitimate shot of getting into and if there is somebody in any anesthesia prog already feedback would be greatly appreciated
thanks

Your step 1 scores are certainly good enough to land you interviews, and if you get interviews you will match. From what I've seen this year, there are a lot of high scorers out there, but still a good mix of the around 220 people getting very good interviews. I know nothing of the comlex so can't comment, but congrats on making a decent step 1.

Other things that you can do include doing some away rotations, getting excellent letters of recommendation from them, and reading on your rotation in anesthesiology.

The Chicago programs will give you some interviews. Illinois Masonic is a solid little program that keeps most spots open for outside the match. As a DO you could use this to your advantage still, I think. You'll have to ask someone more up on this than me. UIC will interview you, as will Loyola and Cook County. University of Chicago and Northwestern may be kind of a reach, but you never know.

As for Michigan, the world should be your oyster. You'll interview at all 3 in the state.

I know nothing of Florida.

Part one scores will get you interviews along with your decent grades. The interview will be determioning factor.
Number of programs in florida tha you should be able to get into without too much difficulty

I posted about Masonic earlier, since i"ve done a rotation there..

It will be hard getting into masonic NOWADAYS if you are a DO or Carribean grad (cuz of how competitive anesthesiology has become and the quality of apps received)...this is s/p talking to PD and Chairman. Think about it there are about 5 med schools in ILL and there are anywhere b/w 20-30 students in each class in Illinois alone that are trying to get into Anesthesiology. The out of match spots they do have are usually for ppl that have done an intern year already and have done extremely well (those spots are competitive).

Places, like Loyola and Cook may be more viable for you. And yes, I would agree w/ u of C and NU being a little reach at this time. If I were you, i would look into more states in the midwest. Not to be a pessimistic, but seeing as though Anesthesiology is very competitive these days..as a DO you will certainly have to apply far wider. Infact, dude, you should look into NY (they've got a crap load of programs which I think are 'easier' to get). My suggestion dude is, if you can try looking at states that have more anesthesia programs than med schools which will increase your chances.

Michigan-also agreed...i think Henry Ford would be a attainable possibly. FLA--dont know either.

Hate to ask the question, but since this came up, might as well.

I am in the same boat. A third year DO student.

USMLE - 240/97
COMLEX - 692/98th percentile.

I know my scores are good, but I was wondering if I would be able to interview at the more competitive programs in chitown given this state of anesthesia competitiveness? Things seem to be crazy this year.

Idiopathic,
Did you apply to any other Chicago programs, or was it just Rush and NW? Also, those in which you know got interviews at NW, did they rotate there beforehand. I actually plan on rotating there, so any word is appreciated.

One of my classmates got interviews at Rush, NW, UIC (actually UIC looks like his first choice). He didnt do any electives there I dont think. I didnt apply anywhere but Rush and NW. I think his scores were comparable to yours...an away rotation always helps at upper-tier spots.

I have a really similar profile on paper. I am a DO. USMLE 1 213/87....Comlex Step 1 550 ( Mean=500).

Did 2 months of Anesthesia. One away at UPENN.

Applied to 65 programs.
Interviewed at 13. Did not decline any interviews.

Here's my list:

UMASS
BayState
TUFTS-NEMC
UMaryland
Indiana U
Ukentucky
Henry Ford
SUNY-Downstate
EInstein-Montefiore
St. Lukes/Roosevelt
Jefferson
Temple
Drexel

Applied to programs in CA/FL/IL. Was not invited.

Good Luck with everything in the next year to come.

I second the away rotations, especially if you don't have good connections at your own school.

If you want to do an away, choose a couple of places to apply to starting NOW. It may take a couple of weeks to get all the materials together (a rare away department will require a letter of recommendation as well as a transcript). Note that some departments don't schedule students in July-August.

If you start now and get your applications in before March-ish, you should have no trouble securing a spot in June, July (if available), August (if available) or September (usually the peak time that everyone wants to do the away).
