So, I have just completed my 2nd year at University of Toronto in Engineering, and realized that Medical School is where I want to be.

My cGPA so far is 3.56.
I have none of the required pre-reqs yet, but plan to have them completed in due time. Does it make a difference that I am in Engineering? (since it is claimed - though I don't think I agree - that it is harder than other undergrad studies)

I have not yet done the MCAT's, so also help on what sort of MCAT scores I should be looking at, will be helpful.

In terms of EC, I have been playing intramural soccer for the past year and will be involved as the Treasurer for a club. Have a part time job, (don't know if that counts for anything).
Please give me ideas on what sort of other EC's I should be looking at as well.

Lastly, I am looking only at Canadian schools as of now, so please guide me as such.

PS: I realize there are a lot of questions, but I really would love to here all the suggestions to help me!

The average cGPA for US matriculants is around 3.6 - 3.7 so you are slightly below the mean...

BUT one huge adv that you have is this gpa does not include your premed gpa

-1 Yr Phy + Lab 8 credits
-1 Yr Calc 6 credits
-1 Yr Chem + Lab 8 credits
-1 Yr OChem + Lab 8 credits
-1 Yr Bio + Lab 8 credits

that is 38 credits of PURE BCMP (Bio/Chem/Math/Phy) GPA and if you can really focus on these courses and get A/A- you will be in a much better shape

I would say get you science GPA in 3.6/3.7 and cumulative GPA at least a 3.6 and youll be in much better shape.

MCAT - anything over 32/33 is quite cometitive but the higher the better any thing below 30 and it would make things difficult

EC- If you break it down you will need

Clinical Exp/Physician Shadowing (to show you know what your getting into and that you are familiar with a clinical enviorment

Clinical Volunteering - (to demonstrate that you care for people)

Non-Clinical Volunteering

...that all I can think of right now

Also I feel most of the questions would belong to pre-allo forum youll get a lot more replies about EC's etc..

-Good Luck

👍Perfectly put. Except for the research (if possible) and leadership position.

Credit for first SDN posting (that I know of) about the above semi-serious look at the Canadian applicant's comprehensive guide to med school applications, I give to bannie22, but kudos to the original author, www.medaholic.com for an interesting pictoral representation (permission to share is given on the FAQ page). This is a site that any Canadian applicant might want to browse through for insights.
