Hi I'm a junior going into senior year. I want to join one of the bs/md programs but I'm not sure if my resume is up to the mark...

SAT
M-780
R-730
W-760

SAT ii
US-740
Chem-780
Level II-800

GPA: 3.85UW 4.32W with 10 AP courses and rest either honors or accelerated except orchestra, health and Spanish.

EC's: - Volunteer at Swedish MC - Played for U-15 regional cricket team - Founded Table Tennis Club at my school - Youth Board Head of an Indian cultural association - Violin for 7 yrs - Volunteered in medical camps in India

I want to apply to bs/md programs but don't know if I have the necessary resume. Can you guys tell me what to add to strengthen my app? Also, for this record where do I have the best chances to apply (in terms of both pre-med and bs/md programs)?

Thanks!

You have a very good SAT score, your GPA is decent, you have a ridiculous workload (plus for you), and good extracurriculars. I can't chance you because I'm not really good at that type of thing, but you do have a strong resume in general.

Now, here's another installment of "AHMD's Corner". I know that you are interested in BS/MD programs, and that's okay. However, I would have a very strong warning for you: only go this route if you can't imagine yourself doing anything besides medicine. I mean only go BS/MD if you can't imagine your life as anything besides that of a doctor. If you decide to go this route, you will probably not have a traditional college experience in terms of social life and extracurriculars (you could, but you'll have a very big workload). The biggest thing though is that you have absolutely no flexibility if you decide medicine is not for you. Unlike a traditional undergrad, where you have to take a variety of courses, you take mostly science courses. This won't let you expand your horizons to see if anything else is interesting to you. I personally would recommend a traditional pre-med program if you are even SLIGHTLY hesitant about medicine, but that's something only you can decide.

Other than that, you have a very strong application. I imagine your essay will be good since you have a wide variety of extracurriculars to write about, so your chances at getting into a good undergrad are very good. (I don't want to mislead you about your chances at a BS/MD school since I have absolutely no idea what the typical applicant is like).

Good luck however you choose! :luck:

First of all, I would like to say congratulations on your awesome SAT scores and unique extracurriculars. I am a medical student who is currently in an accelerated program (just finished 2nd year of medical school).

I think your scores are up to par and you should not worry about that aspect of your app. Those exams are there to get your foot in the door and show to the AdComs that you have the mental capacity for the rigor of med school.

What matters now is how you sell yourself. You have a TON of extracurriculars that AdComs will want to know about. You have to make sure you really show your interest in medicine and provide CONCRETE examples of what created this interest.

Now I would also like to adress a few of AntiHouseMD's points. It is true that you have to be very certain that medicine is the field for you if you are considering an accelerated program. However it's not all doom and gloom. With regards to the workload, you will most likely have the option of doing LESS work than a standard applicant. Many programs exempt their students from taking the MCAT (or only require a "low" score). Having a social life is very possible and I know dozens of kids who were able to fulfill their academic requirements and have time for partying and other non-alcoholic activities.

To be entirely honest, I'm glad I did an accelerated program because it allowed me some time to relax and be lazy during college, while the rest of the pre-meds were slitting each other's throats to get a 4.0 and become President of every club on campus.

Let me know if you have any questions. And once again, good luck on your applications!
