Hey Everyone,
So I just passed NAVLE on my first attempt this April. I was very stressed throughout the preparation phase. Some very kind and loving colleages helped me face this beast of an exam and so i feel like i should share how i tackled it. So for the first 2 months or so i did vetprep 60 mcqs daily plus 2 3 powerpages relevant to the species i was doing mcqs about. You know just testing the waters. In January, I made up a group with some of my friends and we did canine, feline , bovine and equine from Cotes and 5 minute. We would read like 15 to 20 diseases per day and then have a mock session at night time in which we would ask each other questions about things which we thought were tricky. ( Believe me this was sooooooo helpful, for many questions on my actual navle, my mind replayed the exact moment in which my friend asked me about something or told something) We spent like 14 days to read up on euthanasia , emergency medicine, clinic management, antibiotic usage, client communication, fracture management, Surgery basics, Preventive medicine and meat judgement (plus caprine, ovine and porcine from saunders) . Then I did a month of independant study in which I revised Vetprep (the whole package). For the last 30 days or so i did 2 revisions . In 21 days I reread the icva diseases from books. I would read a disease and write 5 things on my notes about that disease. I then gave an assessment a week before my actual navle and got a range of 756 to 800.( this made me hella confident). The last 7 days i just read up on the notes like navle saved my life, vetmed explained etc( You know these pdfs are rolling around in every prep group) . They were very good for quick revision of the important things. Took a day off and then went to take my NAVLE. I had a very tough first section, for a moment I thought there is no way in hell I am passing this. But fortunately the next 5 sections went by smoothly. Got my result 3 days ago and i scored 560. These entire 6 months were an emotional rollercoaster. So theres that.
Please dont hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions. You are not alone in this. My advice to you would be dont overestimated NAVLE and dont underestimate yourself. You guys lived through vet school. This is easy compared to that. Believe in yourself. Best wishes fam.

PS:- i am willing to tutor if someone needs help studying.

Did you take any of the ICVA practice tests? When do you recommend taking those 3. I want to do one 5/6 months out for a baseline and then maybe 2 months out and 1 month out? I'm taking in November/December slot.

I’m not the OP, but I didn’t take any of the practice exams and I passed just fine. The classmates I had who did take them felt they were helpful and I think they typically just did 1 or 2 of them around 2 months out.

Congrats on passing the NAVLE! I am starting to prepare for it and a bit overwhelmed. Would you be willing to share a pdf study materials you have?

Can you please share the PDF's you mentioned (navle saved my life, vetmed explained etc)? I take my NAVLE in a couple weeks and think these would be good for quick review.

Hi Doc,

I sent you a DM

How early is too early to start studying? A lot of my class is very nervous for the NAVLE especially seeing how the class average dropped below an 80%. Many of us wanted to start this upcoming summer going into third year

My opinion… studying that early isn’t the best use of your time. You’re still learning new material, so focus on that and make sure you have a good understanding of the new concepts you’re being taught and the foundational topics you’re building upon. Having a good foundation of knowledge is important, so I’d focus on that before studying specifically for NAVLE. I think the majority of people buckle down with vetprep/zuku/etc during the summer of 4th year to prep for the fall exam window. If you start too early, you won’t remember the topics you studied at the beginning. Also, your school has several other classes of students who will take the NAVLE before you, so maybe they’ll have course corrected by the time it’s your turn.

I'm in a 5 year program. During my 4th year I took the ICVA diagnoses list and put then in a one-note. As I learned the diseases I set it up with etiology, clinical signs, diagnostics, treatments. I conferred with merck veterinary manual. That way the diseases I learned were already in my computer. When I started studying for the NAVLE this summer I hand wrote the Zuku Top 20s for the big 4 species. I also finished out the list of what I didn't learn on my one-note then really cracked down on questions later.

In my opinion having the diseases already written in your own thoughts and words is more important so when you come back to it, it's not fully relearning it. If that makes sense.

Hope this helps. Pray for me as my NAVLE is December 16th! But this is what I've done and pass or fail I wouldn't have changed it.
