So, this turned out to be an actual novel. I’ve outlined my background and plan for the next year, which is when I’ll be applying. This may be helpful to people in my non-traditional situation and if it applies to you, I’d love to compare plans. If not, any feedback from people who are currently applying would also be appreciated. It’s quite long, so if you don’t want to read it, then don’t!

For starters, my background: as mentioned before, I just graduated this past month. I majored in Neuroscience and while I classified myself as pre-med, I never really had the passion some of the other people in my major did and was never serious about applying. After doing a summer of research/shadowing, I realized I did not want to be an MD and I shifted my career plans to QA in pharmaceuticals. I worked in that sect throughout college and even went became a part-time student my senior year to work in a big pharma company 3 days a week. Mid-way through this past semester, I realized I pharma was not for me and after a lot of hard thinking I decided to pursue dentistry. Unlike in my pre-med days, I’m motivated to do hard work for the next year because I’ve honestly never wanted anything so badly before.

My current stats are 3.5 oGPA, 3.18 sGPA using the AADSAS calculations. My science courses include GC I & II, Bio I & II, Physics I & II, Orgo I, a few neuro classes, a stats course, and calculus. My science GPA is obviously not acceptable and thus, remedying that as much as possible is critical. Still, obtaining a super stellar sGPA will be impossible, so “killing” the DAT in so much as I am help it is also necessary. In combination with getting the shadowing hours in, my plan is as follows:

Summer Break 2013

o Get in as many shadowing hours as possible (this has been hard, I’ve visited 6 places in person and have no bites yet!)
o Take Biochemistry w/ lab at 4-year university
o Begin DAT Review: I’ve been using CDP and CDR for about 2.5 weeks now, roughly 5 hours per week. It’s super early to start studying, but I know myself and I think it’ll help boost my confidence. I’m only focusing on RC and PAT at this point and I’ve been getting 20s thus far in both.
o Continue working at big pharma company for much needed $$ dolla billz $$

Fall Semester 2013 aka. Hell

• Take Mircobiology w/ lab and retaking OC I (I got my only C in this course…) at 4-year university. Obviously need to get As in both of these.
• Study for the DAT: I’m taking this super seriously. I’ll have classes three days a week and starting in October, I’ll pick up the pace and hopefully fit in 5-6 hours on the days I’m not going to be in class, depending on my homework load. I plan to review the sciences and continue practicing PAT, RC, and QR.

Winter Break 2013-2014 aka. Hell 2.0

o DAT all day, every day. I’ll have approximately 4.5 weeks to fully commit to studying after my finals are over and doing this time, I’ll likely focus on taking practice tests.
o Take DAT at end of winter break (mid-January)

Spring Semester 2013

• Take Orgo II, A&P II, and maybe another science class at a 4-year university. Hopefully As on As on As.
• Reevaluate school list based on DAT scores and GPA
• Prepare first draft personal statement in February. Review draft over the next few months.
• Ensure all LORs are requested
• Apply with my school’s pre-health committee
• Finish 100 hours of shadowing (so terrified I won’t find places to do this)
• Worst case scenario, DAT retake is necessary, study throughout the semester and take at the beginning of June 2014

Summer Break 2014

o Finalize school list (20+ schools)
o Complete and submit the AADSAS application by the third week of June
o Ensure DAT scores and transcripts are sent to schools
o Follow up with schools on a bi-weekly basis to ensure all materials have been received
o Complete secondary applications when received

It’s a lot to accomplish, but I think it’s necessary. If I do well in the 5-6 science classes I’ll be taking, my projected sGPA will be around a 3.4 and my oGPA will sit at a 3.6. I know that achieving this is anything but guaranteed, as acing these courses will be difficult. But like I said, I’m prepared to work for this. I think it’s too early to tell what DAT score range I should realistically expect, but I really aiming for 20+ across the board. Even if I commit myself 100% to my plan and do well this year, I realize that my application will still be mediocre at best. Thus, I plan on applying to 20 or more schools, including mostly privates and my state school.

Sorry for the rant, but I wanted to lay out my entire plan and see if anyone could identify any missing pieces or suggest alternative options. Or maybe I need a reality check on how naïve I’m being with my project GPA/good DAT scores, who knows. Regardless, I’d love any constructive feedback!

Thanks so much for your response! I wrote that in a state of anxiety last night, mostly because I wanted feedback from people who've done it before and partly because my family is already telling me to shut up about pre-dental stuff...

I don't really understand how you are having trouble getting shadowing opportunities. Every time I went in or called....I shadowed.

I don't know either! I'm going into the offices dressed professionally and I'm very polite to the receptionists who promise to talk to the doctor and call me back, but nothing so far. I guess I'll just keep trying!

Start getting involved with community volunteering. You will need a lot, and that will eat up time.

Actually, I have a question about this. Does the type of volunteer work need to be dental oriented? In college, I did a good amount of volunteering at various homeless shelters, hospitals, prisons, and elderly homes over my 4 years. I figure that volunteering at a dental clinic would be ideal, but given my luck with shadowing, I'm nervous I won't get the opportunity to do that.

I understand your need for dolla billz, but applying is a huge time commitment. I would recommend going part time while you are studying for the DAT. You need to commit as much time to that as possible, and I can already tell you that your schedule is going to give you problems when it comes time to hit the books for the DAT.

I totally agree. I'm already part-time and will probably stop working altogether during the fall. Not the best move financially, but in the long run it'll cost me even more time, money, and emotional stress to have to retake the DAT and/or reapply if I don't commit 100% this year.

Sounds like a good plan. If you boost your science gpa up to 3.3. Also assuming you made a 21 TS on your DAT. Then I think you have a decent shot in getting several interviews, and probably getting accepted from at least 3-4 schools. As long as you apply broadly though, and make sure they are OOS friendly! Goodluck !

Just glancing through real quick I noticed you plan to take your DAT before orgo 2. Why not wait till early summer to take your DAT after you complete orgo 2 (and A and p 2)? Especially since you need to do extra well on it.

Yeah, my original plan actually was to take it in late May. I decided to instead aim for January so that if I royally screw it up somehow, I'll have enough time to retake and still apply early. On top of that, I think the idea of a buffer will decrease my anxiety to some degree if I take in January. I'll have focus on OC more to compensate, but given I haven't started study that yet, I don't know if that'll be enough. I guess can always postpone it if I realize I'm in over my head...? Ugh, I wish I'd known I wanted to pursue dentistry earlier...playing catch up is tricky.

Your story sounds similar to mine. Premed then realized it was what my parents wanted, not I. then worked at a pharmacy and said nope. Got a BA in economics, 3.6 overall with a 3.18 sGPA. Decided I never wanted anything as much as I wanted to go to dental school. Got in to 3 schools this past cycle. You'll be fine. Do something to make your application stand out. There are tons of schools out there that want someone who is personable and someone that they can converse with for more than a few minutes over someone who has a 4.0 and 3.9 sGPA.

Hi,
Don't give up!! I asked about 12 dentists before I finally found one who was willing to let me shadow. I strongly recommend you to look for free dentist in your area, they are more friendly and willing to help.
🙂
