Good Evening!
I am a 26 year old immigrant from The UK. It has always been my goal; since I was a lil nipper to be Physician. I am now at point in my life where I am able to pursue that dream, and hopefully make it happen.
I am presuming that the benefit of being an older or "non trad" student is that we have the maturity through life experience to handle the rigours that is Med School and being a Physician. Ya know grounded and all that stuff.
I am currently working on my pre-reqs and Bio degree in Portland, OR. So aside from that glaringly obvious set back of 8 plus years, I was curious to know what else I needed to do now aside from pad out the education side of my resume.
A little background. I went to school in The UK. I achieved A-levels in Human Bio, Exercise Science, Governemnt and Politics ( your guess is as good as mine) and Comp Sci. Upon arriving in The States, where I married my childhood sweetheart who was American; still is as far as I know, I came to realise that my A-Levels didnt mean much at the school I was looking to attend, Western Oregon University if you're curious.
However my GCSES were enough to get me in, the only issue was I had to start ALL over again! Being the 19 year old ***** I was then I decided that I couldnt take that, so I left school and focussed on my second passion, soccer!
I subsequently became the Goalkeeping coach of the NCAA Div II Womans team. Spending about two years there coaching with them, as well as other clubs around the area.
I have also held director positions with some local academies around PDX as well as some volunteer work with my friend who ran his own fitness centre with an emphasis on functional movement and the like, somewhat putting my knowledge of Anat and phys and Bio mech to good use.
I was also divorced through that time and had a MASSIVE immigration battle and predicament, my parents wanted me home, I wanted to stay family memebers died, I could get to the funerals due to immigration not allowing me to leave, or more specifically; not allowing me back in.
Since then I now work in Financial Crimes for a bank, and I also have two children and a very stable relationship, with the mother of course. Which is leading me to go back to school.
I will also be shadowing a Radiologist friend of mine sometime next month.
I am 95 percent sure I want to go in to primary care/paeds. But I wouldnt mind Rad either.
So I guess my question is does all the above meet the requirements for leadership experience, volunteer work, obstacles that need to be overcome etc
Also any advice about the whole process would be lovely!
Sorry its poorly put together, sat at work trying to do this and get work done. Also sorry for the ramble.
