So classes start up again in a week and I'm still not sure if I'm going to keep my schedule the way it is. I'm a sophomore, so I don't have to declare my major just yet, but the classes I take will elminate some majors (unless of course I go for longer than 4 years). I'm in the college of engineering, so it's going to be an engineering major, I've at least decided that much! I really only seriously thought about the possibility of going to med school a month or two ago, so I'm still not 100% sure I'm going to go full throttle towards that. I'd like to get some more experience maybe doing research or volunteering before I decide for sure. Unfourtunatly I don't have time for all that before I must schedule my classes for next semester. The three main choices I'm decided between are Bioengineering (Chem engin option), Chemical engineering (bio option), or another engineering major (possibly electrical or nuc). The first two options would keep the possibilities of med school more open since the major would take care of my biology, for the last one, I'd probaly have to go for another year in order to fullfill all of the chem and bio needed for med school. Anyway I schedule my classes two of the above three options would require another semester if I decided not to take the classes for that major. Anyway, if you read all that, I'd just like to get as much input as possible, I realize you can't tell me what major I would like to do or which would be best for me, just thought I'd get some opinions.

My biased opinion? Be a bioengineer!! I don't know if this is true or not, but this is what my advisor told me: Chem engineering jobs have been declining.
My fav part is that all those pre-med reqs count towards my degree, whereas if i did chem-e all of them wouldn't, & I still get to take the fun chem-e classes too.

Do ChemE

1) ChemE's can get jobs in bioengineering....the difference between a bio specialty vs cheme specialty option is trivial......if a place hires you it will be for your cheme skills.......go cheme and at least have a real skill set.

2) Do you like ChemE a lot? Or do you want to study a lot of everything......most bioeng curriculums are intro to every engineering field and some allow you to then specialize a little.....there seems to be a pretty big difference from my perspective.........

3) If you like something else do it? 5 years? who cares? I had to go to class two summers to graduate in 4 yours with an IE degree, but I'm glad I did it.......I could have been a cheme or bio and graduated without summers........but doing something you like is far more important...........

my advice is chemical engineering as long as you like it. i am biomedical, and as an undergrad there are practically no jobs for biomedical engineers, but with chemical, there are plenty of jobs... well maybe not plenty with this economy, but many more than biomedical has. however, like the other poster said, do what you like. you DON'T want to be miserable. good luck with your decision!
